  12. First Used Humvee Auction Rakes in $744,000 for the U.S. Army he U.S. Army auctioned off some of its retired umvees, bringing in big bucks. The auction involved 25 trucks where each had a starting bid of $10,000. The bidding amount went between $21,500 and $41,000. About 75 percent of the total revenues went to the federal government. The lowest winning bid went to a 1989 AM General M1038 Humvee HMMWV that had an auction price of $21,500. The highest bid was for a 1994 AM General M998A1 Humvee HMMWV declared sold at a bid amount of $41,000. HMMWV, pronounced as "Humvee," stands for High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. On average, the successful bid was around $30,000. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has around 4,000 surplus Humvees. Some will have to be transferred to local law enforcement agencies while the remainder will be placed for a public auction from IronPlanet, an online auction house. The age-range of the Humvees is traced to begin from the Reagan-era (1987) up to the days when President Clinton was serving his first term in the office. Humvees had started to gain worldwide attention during the Gulf War's "Operation Desert Storm." Made of strong steel and iron, the 2 to 3 ton Humvees were perfect for crossing a desert landscape. Though they may have an imposing look, the Humvee is definitely not built for road cruising. Its engines range from 6.2 liter V-8 diesel to 6.5-liter V-8 turbo-diesel along with a 3 or 4-speed automatic transmission. What set the Humvees apart are their rugged build, torque-rich engines and their heavy-duty 4 by 4 hardware. "The Humvee was designed for a military mission and was not designed to meet civilian safety standards," stated AM General LLC, the Humvees' manufacturer. "AM General does not endorse nor support the sale of these military vehicles to the general public or private entities. AM General further opposes any use of these military vehicles by individuals or entities outside the military context for which the vehicles are designed. AM General does not sell the military vehicle or service parts for the military vehicle to the general public." Almost 300,000 Humvees were built both for the U.S. military and for its allies. The first civilian version came out after Arnold Schwarzenegger had talked to company officials on building a model that he could drive around. The brand was then bought by General Motors which started to build the vehicles until 2010. The DLA is reviewing the next batch of Humvees that they can place under auction. The new round of auction is said to be on Jan. 7. http://www.techtimes.com/articles/22537/20...he-u-s-army.htm

  14. Terminally ill 6 year old wants Christmas cards. FOUNTAIN GREEN, Sanpete County — Now that Thanksgiving is over, a lot of people are focusing on shopping and getting out those Christmas cards. A girl struggling with illness hopes that this year you will add one more card to your list. In the quiet town of Fountain Green, the local post office is the heart of the community. And getting the mail from Box 162 is something that little Addie Fausett literally lives for. At 6 years old, Addie is starting to count the Christmas cards sent specifically to her, which she can hang on the door. There is a reason so many people are sending Addie a Christmas card. "She kind of stopped growing when she was 3,” said Tami Fausett, Addie’s mother. And slowly since then, the bubbly and energetic little girl who now weighs just 23 pounds continues to struggle. "She likes to laugh and have a good time and hear stories, but lately she has had a lot of days she will just cry all day long,” Tami Fausett said. And even with many visits to neurologists at Primary Children's, Addie’s condition has gone undiagnosed. Enlarge image (Photo: Sam Penrod/KSL TV) "Cerebral atrophy is just a symptom of what is wrong, but she is still undiagnosed,” Tami Fausett said. The deteriorating condition of her brain resulted last month in a devastating prognosis. "They told us she probably won't last much longer and they told us roughly a year,” Tami Fausett said. Now, with the prospect that this will be Addie's last Christmas, her grandparents thought it would be nice for Addie to receive a lifetime of Christmas cards this year. "She doesn't get to play with kids, so we thought if everyone would send her a card, we could tell all her friends it would make her Christmas a little bit better,” Tami Fausett said. With the help of her older sisters, Shayley and Audree — who hang up the cards — cards for Addie and her sisters are pouring in from family, friends, and as word spreads on social media, even strangers. "(We’re) hoping to get a lot so we can cover all the walls with them, for Addie,” Tami Fausett said. Back at the post office, if this smile on the other side of Box 162 won't warm your heart, Addie's Christmas wish for us all certainly will. "Merry Christmas!” Addie exclaimed. If you would like to send Addie and her sisters a card, you can mail it to Box 162, Fountain Green, UT 84632. http://www.wndu.com/home/headlines/Cards-g...-285280801.html
  15. I don't think it was the choke so much as the chest compression that killed him. All that weight on his thoracic cavity not allowing him to breath resulted in a cardiac arrest. The choke was a triangle that hit his carotids but it didn't cause a loss of consciousness because Garner could be heard saying "I can't breath". That he was talking also indicates it wasn't a tracheal choke. So I'm thinking chest compression plus a heart attack waiting to happen. Here's a great video breaking down what happened.

  18. 6,000 Venomous Brown Recluse Spiders Infest Missouri Couple's Home A Missouri couple is facing a web of legal troubles after their home was infested with an estimated 6,000 venomous spiders. The Torsts bought their Weldon Spring country club home, which overlooks a golf course, in October of 2007. But they haven't been able to live in the house for years because of the massive infestation of brown recluse spiders. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Susan Torst noticed the spiders shortly after she and her husband bought the house. The newspaper reports: [she] saw spiders and their webs every day. They were in the mini blinds, the air registers, the pantry ceiling, the fireplace. Their exoskeletons were falling from the can lights. Once when she was showering, she dodged a spider as it fell from the ceiling and washed down the drain. According to KMOV, the home has become known to locals as "the spider house." Earlier this week, an exterminator's brightly colored tarp tented the house as it was pumped full of pesticide. For the Torsts, the creepy, crawly ordeal has been anything but a day at the circus. In 2008, the Torsts sued the home's former owners for failing to disclose that the house was essentially a fancy cave for spiders to breed in. A biologist consulted in the suit said the estimated number of spiders on the property was very conservative, since the numbers were drawn in the winter, when the arachnids are less active. The Torsts also filed a claim with State Farm, their insurance company. The civil suit was found in their favor, but they've never collected the $472,110 that was awarded them. The house is now in foreclosure. State Farm filed an appeal in 2013, but later dropped it. The previous owners filed for bankruptcy around the same time. Now the Torsts are suing again. Their attorney says that State Farm won't pay because there's a policy exclusion for insects. The lawyer points out that spiders are not insects. Brown recluse spider bites are painful and can be very serious, depending on how much venom is injected in the bite. “[The bite is] not going to kill you, but it will make you wish you were dead,” University of Kansas researcher Jamal Sandidge told KMOV. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/10/b..._n_5965116.html
  19. Not really abandoned but.. https://autos.yahoo.com/news/rare-lamborghi...-133040331.html The hard shoulder. That strip of pavement running alongside the motorway normally collects the world’s old, asthmatic and generally downtrodden jalopies when mechanical failures suddenly strike. But passersby traveling over London’s Tower Bridge were treated to the likes of something a little bit more, shall we say, exclusive – a rare Lamborghini Countach abandoned on the side of the road. Yet somehow that isn’t the weirdest part of the story. According to The Telegraph, the owner of the stranded Lamborghini, a Mr. Edwards, was driving across London’s Tower Bridge last Wednesday when – in typical Italian supercar fashion – the car ran out of gas and ground to a halt, inadvertently blocking traffic in one lane. Not a great start, considering it was Edwards’ first full day with the car. Yes, first. The thirsty Countach allegedly sat on the side of the Tower Bridge until Thursday evening, when crews finally removed the vehicle by police order. But not before it went viral. The misadventures of the classic Lamborghini began in January of this year, when Edwards purchased the car and had it imported from Austria. Upon picking the Countach up from his mechanic, he took it out for a spin that day and was promptly rear-ended by another car. No sooner had the Lambo left the shop; it quickly returned for repairs to the back end and an all-over paint respray – where it has remained ever since. With nearly 10 months with the car and only just two days of driving – we sincerely hope Mr. Edwards’ luck with supercars turns around for the better.
