Incoming 991 GT3RS

Recommended Posts

After being told it would probably never happen, we got "the call" from the dealer with a configurable build slot for an RS

Some of our build details:

UltraViolet (purple)

PCCB

Lightweight Bucket Seats (CF)

Front Axle Lift System

Silver uprights and wheels

It'll look something like this but with clear tail lights (rather than red):

Latest ETA is 2-10-17 which is a week later than original estimate. I fully expect it'll be early, but it won't matter because we'll wait for warmer weather before it's driven.

That is going to look awesome and with performance to match if not more so.

Huge congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Congrats, I'm confident you'll love it!

Good calls on the silver wheels/uprights and clear tails.

I assume you're doing the all black interior with silver stitching? White dials also go great with the silver touches.

Thank you. Will do!

Huge congrats Cake :icon_super:
Thank you my friend!

Great spec. Saw an RS down in Omaha a month ago and the thing has presence. Congrats!
Thank you! I agree re "presence"! Saw one at Sebring last winter!

Congrats! You're going to love the color. SW has the same car in that color and it's absolutely bonkers.
Thanks - next best thing to paint to sample (which was not available).

CONGRATS!!! i absolutely love the GT3RS.... hopefully i'll have an opportunity to pick one up on the used market.
There are lot of used floating around - it's just a question of your tolerance for paying over MSRP. I have to believe some of these folks selling NEED to move it and will get motivated on price with so many RS in the market. Good luck in your hunt - if I stumble across anything I'll pass it along.

Thanks. Yes - all black interior. Leather dash. Contrast GT Silver stitching on seats, dash, steering wheel, doors, etc. Didn't do the white dials. Did go with yellow belts since from the exterior it'll pick up the PCCB calipers but otherwise the interior is black leather/alcantara with silver stitching.

Congrats Cake! :icon_super:
Thank you!

That's epic! I saw one of these on my last trip to Cali. The color is awesome!!! A huge congratulations and I can't wait to see it in person. Is it spring yet?
Thanks - I'll see you at C&C, and spring is just around the corner!!!

Wow, congrats! Is there still a huge markup on these?
There is a hefty markup on any that I've seen listed with dealers or on the used market. Our dealer doesn't sell over MSRP so we are lucky in that regard. Which is kinda funny since I sold our yellow GT4 for over MSRP and did a courtesy trade through the dealer. I sold the car for more than they could (or would - had it been new).

Nice enjoy
Thank you. Looking forward to pics of your new beauty when it arrives!

That is the best color for the GT3 RS, but I can't help thinking it would look a lot better with the wheels painted dark grey or black. Congratulations on getting an allocation!

I'm getting interested in Porsches and I'm wondering how usable/livable are the GT cars. How are the carbon seats on longer trips? I've never driven or rode in a GT Porsche before, the closest thing would be a 991 GTS, which I assume is pretty far away from a GT3/GT3RS.

The silver wheels/uprights are definitely a "love it" or "hate it" combo. I'm tired of black or dark gray wheels. I had black on my Cayman R which truly suited the car. I have dark gray on my GT4 which I like because they are practical for the track - and I like the "monolithic look". Had them on the Lambo and they looked great - but I also like bright wheels.

We went with silver because these will stay clean with PCCB, and I like the contrast of the silver uprights with dark paint. The architecture of the upright shows better (to my eye) and I want the wheels to pick up the silver. I like the contrast to the paint - but I can see where some folks prefer the black wheels because there is a lot of black trim on the car and black wheels go with that color scheme. It's just our personal preference. If we have the car long enough we may eventually change the wheels just for something new, and we can always change the uprights if desired.

I've driven extensively in a 997.2 GT3 (a friend's) both on track and on long drives. We swapped cars a few times on our way to Road Atlanta and Road America - so I was in his car for a couple hours at a time. I've also had a ride in a new RS. It was fine - not uncomfortable despite CF seats. Yes they are stiffly sprung but I think they're compliant enough for street driving that it's not uncomfortable. If you have a bad back and are sensitive to road "noise" then you may not agree.

We had the 18 way seats in our yellow GT4, and those are significantly more comfortable than the CF seats in my gray GT4 - BUT - I'm perfectly fine for long hours with a little lumbar pillow supporting my lower back. This was also true of the CF seats in my Cayman R (same seat as 997GT3)

There is a ton of discussion about seat fit and comfort on the Porsche forum (RL) and despite what some people say - I think there is no single answer. Everyone is built differently and it just depends on how the seat "fits" you, and also your tolerance for a seat that's less cushy than an 18 way adjustable seat. Someone said it depends on your posture but I disagree. The seats are not adjustable and hit different bodies in different anatomical places. What is comfortable to one person might be torture to another.

My husband doesn't tolerate the CF seats well because he has serious back problems, and he feels every bump in the road. He found the 18 ways better but he wanted the CF in the RS because it's a GT car and he feels the CF seat suits it better. We also feel they are more desirable for resale, but there is an audience for both.

The best way to understand is to test drive if possible. Some folks found the 18 way seats too narrow and didn't like where the bolster hits them across the back. It just depends on your height, your build, and your preference.

I take long trips in the GT4 with CF seats and enjoy it - no problem. Some people hate it. If you're never going to track the car then by all means consider the more comfortable seats. The RS has only two choices: CF or 18-way.

I believe the RS configurator is taken down from the Porsche web site. Production is ending this month and I believe all cars are configured and locked, so the only way to buy one (at this point) is from a dealer, or used - but the build is already locked even if the car isn't produced yet. Same for the GT4.

Obviously there will likely be more generations of an RS and there is an upcoming GT3 rumored to be offered in manual. The GT4 may or may not appear again - that hasn't been determined and because there is no precedent - it seems no one knows. The 981 model is done, and the 718 is here, and of course the 718 is turbo and no one knows if the next iteration of GT cars will continue to be naturally aspirated. It's heavily debated, and there have been some statements from Porsche's GT department head that GT cars will not be turbo - but nothing official has been released.

So far we've been very pleased with quality and reliability. Values will rise and dip based on a variety of factors but I was happy to get over MSRP for our yellow GT4 with 5500 miles and 18-way seats which are less desirable (to most folks). We didn't buy these cars as an "investment" and assume they'll depreciate, but probably at a slower rate than other Porsches. And many GT cars hold their value quite nicely but that remains to be seen with this latest version of which they produced a relatively large number world wide.

Good luck in your search. Try and find a car with the CF seats to try. That will tell you a lot!

Thanks a lot for the explanations!

I test drove the 991.2 the other day, the new 3.0 turbo engine lacks a certain something, can't put my finger on it, it's a wonderful car but I prefer the NA ones. GT3RS is out of the question for me, as a first time 911 buyer getting an allocation is frankly, impossible, and secondly, buying on the used market entails a 40-50k EUR premium over msrp and that puts it firmly out of my budget. I was looking at either a 991 GT3 or a GTS. There are a couple of GTSs local to me for sale but no GT3s. I will probably buy from Germany anyway since there are a lot more cars to choose from. I noticed the GT3s mostly have a 'touring spec', adaptive seats and no CCBs as opposed to the RS which are overwhelmingly with ccbs and carbon seats. I'll be using it mostly for longer drives and occasionally on the track. GT3s seem to hold value well, a sub 10k km one with ccbs (which I think are a must on a GT car) and adaptive seats in silver sells for about what it sold new, but depreciation is not a big concern, ofc if it holds value well it just adds to the proposition, but I plan on driving it a lot (15-18k km per year) so resale price will probably be affected. I guess I'll try to arrange a longer test drive to see how the carbon seats suit me, they do look good.

My local dealer says that there will definitely be a 991.2 GT3 and I will be able to order one since they won't be limited like the GT3RS/GT4. He is expecting it in 2017 but couldn't say for sure when. I'm not in a hurry now, but come spring, I'll be getting the itch for a new car.

Thanks again and congratulations on getting the allocation!

My pleasure and thank you! Best of luck in your search, and hope you're able to get a decent test drive of the seats.

Glad the lumbar pillow is working out. Too bad about your GF (but you can always get a new one LOL!!!) Has she tried the pillow? It makes a huge difference for me.

Thanks and looking forward to the rear engine experience!

Cake, like me, that car is gorgeous.
Thank you Darling (I agree wholeheartedly)! I've never named a car before, but this one has "Chaos" written all over it!
