For those into aviation history...

Memphis Belle? Exhibit May 2018

I grew up going to this museum and still go at least once a year.

I highly recommend going. So many historic planes on display.

This amazing plane is done and now available for viewing.

I was up in Dayton at my inlaws house on sunday and there was a similar bomber flying around (they live about 5 miles from WPAFB). Always cool to look up and see planes like that in the air. Amazingly, ive still never been to the museum!

My company Christmas party this past December was at the Air and Space museum near DC. Eating and drinking next to an SR71 and the Space Shuttle was pretty cool. The plane above would be awesome to see too.

I spent quite a bit of time at WPAFB years ago and the museum there is pretty cool you will have to visit. Its nice to see this aircraft restored, the last time I saw it outdoors in Memphis it was pretty much stripped and vandalized of anything decent, kudos for those that restored it!

I'll have to check it out. On a related note I was in New Orleans last month and visited the National WW2 museum there. Completely amazing. It is the number 2 ranked museum in the WORLD on Tripadvisor and for good reason.

You could easily spend two entire days with all the interactive exhibits and six buildings. Tons of video, spoken word accounts of every major battle from multiple veterans, etc. The Boeing building was nothing to rival Wright Pat as far as volume, but all the digital interaction options are cool. Full 360° 3D views from every seat in a Super Fortress and all the other planes.

They also had a giant wall (25' by 75') with pictures of every medal of honor winner. There were touch screens in front that were searchable by name, state, branch, etc. You could then read a detailed biography for each MOH recipient. I could have spent half a day just there. It is worth a trip to New Orleans for the museum alone. A few pics below.

Some incredible stuff here. I visited the museum in Dayton, it was incredible. Looks like they have kept making awesome strides there.

That WW2 museum looks absolutely stunning. Would love to see that!

It's worth going and plan on spending a day there.

I would also recommend going to Carillon Park where they have the original 1905 Wright Flyer III on display. (The Wright brothers were from Dayton)

And Howthorn Hill where one of the Write brothers lived for many years)

So much significant American history in Dayton worth exploring. :icon_thumleft:

There are lots of mom and pop museums and smaller organizations all over the country with interesting stuff, but if I had to rank my top 5 aviation museums I'd put it like this,

1. National Museum of the Air Force (this thread) Dayton, Ohio. The size and scope is unmatched. LOTS of stuff inside a massive multi-part facility broken into eras. A ton of stuff outside, too big to fit inside in outstanding condition (that's hard to do). Additional annexes are on the base for experimental aircraft and former presidential aircraft.

2. Udvar-Hazy Center (Dulles annex of the Smithsonian), Chantilly, Virginia. The variety is incredible and is a perfectly focused history of flight in top quality presentation. A solid mix of new, old, novel, and common with a dash of foreign, it's the tits.

3. National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, Florida. An unbroken history in every detail of Naval air presented in top form of the machines, the history, and the culture.

4. Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, Washington, D.C. It's got it all, but is showing its age...just a solid, must see aerospace foundation.

5. Museum of Flight, Tukwila (Seattle), Washington. Outside the Boeing plant, also a top quality museum, smaller than the Smithsonian, but stays in the running with novel, high quality exhibits.
