egear discussion

Was hoping I could post here about having an educated discussion regarding the Gallardo's (2008) egear transmission.

It seems if you post anywhere, people immediately say it sucks (I know 90% of these people have never driven the car). So I figured LP.com would be a logical place to get some information.

I realize it will not have the same feel, or quickness of the GT-R DCT, I also own an M6 that has a DCT as well. I own a manual V10 R8 now which is a joy to drive but can't help feeling like I want to get into a (2008) Gallardo LP cars slightly out of budget. I've always wanted one but never pulled the trigger.

Can someone give me some real world experience how the egear drives compared to other high end cars or something I can assimilate it to?

The problem with E Gear is its all a matter of personal opinion. Ive driven a 2006 G and a 2011 Superleggera fairly extensively and personally? I loved them. My only DCT experience is with the Current BMW M4. I feel the DCT is too smooth. Un-involved. I prefer the harder shifts of a single clutch, but again, its my personal opinion and others simply don't. My first paddle car was an 03 M3 with the SMG, and apparently I was one of the few without any issues with it, and truthfully loved it. Do I prefer to row gears? Absolutely. But rolling into a turn and experiencing perfect downshifts with the flick of your wrist is a pretty damn good time in my book. I don't think it took anything away.

With that said, the E Gear cars are a dime a dozen. So if you are truly interested in one, start the convo with a dealer and tell them you need to drive it before you buy anything.

Thanks for your quick reply. Part of the issue is I live in Rural NY and there isn't much around here to drive. I will have to travel, and how OCD I am with my cars I will likely have something shipped to me thats exactly what I want.

have you driven any of the paddle shift cars? I know an 03 M3, is no where near a 2006 Gallardo. But the concept of the paddle shifters (assuming they are real electornic clutch controlled cars and not automatics with paddles) is pretty similar. In my experience, you either love it or you hate it. The later the model, the better the transmission is.

The 08 is ok much better than the early iterations but if you compare it with a DCT Huracan for argument sake you’d be mad not to want the DCT, the e-gear is a compromise a stepping stone towards a great setup which is the DCT.

When compared with the manual for me would make no difference, equally as exciting.

Test drive and figure out for yourself what you like most.

My 2 cents:

The second gen Egear is a step up from the first gen Egear, but it's night and day difference from a manual or a DCT. Personally I think DCT transmissions are too smooth and that the Egear is a little to herky-jerky (especially on cold starts) if you leave them in auto mode. If you drive the Egear in manual mode and practice your shift points, it can be smoothed out. I love manual cars, like my '01 M3, but as a tall guy (I''m 6'6") manual is not a practical option for me in supercars due to my long dancer's legs. For what they are I think the Egear is fun, especially since they are single clutch (I'm sure you've seen one of my passionate posts on this topic).

As others have said, it's probably best to drive the Egear and see what you think since it is a highly personal preference. And Egear cars are 90% of the market for Gallardo's so finding one will be cake. Just remember that Egear is single clutch and will feel much snappier than any DCT.

Ryan.

Coming from the gtr world to its night and day differnce. I have an 08 Superlegerra. Def a bit more than a standard G and in line with Early LP G's price wise.

Reason I chose the SL is it's a limited production 172 built in 08. Won't bottom out price wise. Long term value if u get a low mile low owner car which are hard to come by now a day.

It's def much slower than dct but regular drives you learn how to modulate throttle not to get he jerkiness leaving a full stop. The 4wd clubkiness is def felt in tight turns if you are trying to back up or make K turns to park.

08 clutches last much longer. My car during the PPI had 90% clutch on it with 9k miles.

This lambo is def a looker. miss the functionality of the back seats of the gtr miss the speed of the gtr.

My saying is the gtr is the wife it does everything. The lambo is the hot chick you see and want knowin it doesn't do much of anything right but looks damn good.

Appreciate everyone taking the time out to post. I think the verdict is if I'm buying egear I need to find one to drive. Maybe link up with some downstate NY guys during a meet or something and bring my R8 and see if anyone will let me drive one.

I'm selling my gated v10 R8 for this car which I enjoy, but always had an itch for the Lamb.

The key difference is how each behaves in traffic. On open road, the eggar shifts plenty fast and has more feel. The dual clutch is much better in traffic than egear.

The only thing I’ll add is that the 09 and newer cars are noticeably improved with regards to

the transmission/clutch but I also felt in the suspension. The newer car simply drives better and it’s faster. After owning quite a few Gallardo’s I’d strongly recommend stretching for a LP560.

At first I wasn't too fussy about the EG, now I love it, as others have said DCT is too easy, with EG you have to drive the car with throttle control, timing etc. Once you master it, you'll never want to go back.

Mind you for a daily driver the DCT would be my preference, but for going out and having fun I'd take EG any day...
