04 G loss of steering assist

Hi all.

Went for my first long drive after a long time off the road to carry out servicing, repairs and mods.

Got about a 100 miles from home and noticed a noise in the engine bay.

Stopped to have a look and found I could not turn the steering wheel with the engine running.

Also the lift kit wont work.

It sounds like the power steering pump to me but why?

Got it towed home and checked further.

Fluid is at the correct level - I actually didnt change it, only sucked out the reserviour and topped it back up.

Rang the Lamborghini agent to make sure I used the correct oil - yes, it takes standard ATF transmission oil.

Cars done around 30,000 miles, seems low to have a steering fault and just happened after I changed the oil - bloody bizzare.

There are no external leaks in the system.

Anyone had similar problems?

Not sure if this applies to the G. Worth looking into. Is there a whining noise coming from your power steering pump?

Yep, typical faulty pump whine.

One thing the Lambo peeps said is DONT leave the car in the garage with the lift kit raised as it put too much pressure on the system.

Thing is I do that because my driveway is so steep I need it and the previous owner said not to use it too much as he had problems with it not working from time to time.

Still, this shouldn't have any effect on the pump as it has no relevance until you apply the lift kit or turn the steering wheel.

Will check out your link, thanks.

Most likely it the shaft that turns P/S pump is worn smooth so when engine is running the shaft dose not turn the pump. Will need pump removed and insp. I will bet the shaft is worn smooth and needs replaced.

Like Jeff said, happened to my 05 Gallardo. New owner sheered the shaft but didn't do anything about it until the internals of the pump grenades and took out the front lift as well

Your 04 have front lift?

If the pump no longer makes noise, it needs to be removed first. Do you have a flashing lift light when you try to use front lift? Since the steering is not working and you have no external leak, we can rule out the distribution block and hose rupture.

Phew.

Yup, just the shaft splines gone on the pump side.

Funny how that sounds like a whining pump?

Should have drained the engine oil first though as I lost 5 litres of it and its just been changed damn it.

Getting the new parts fom Eurospares UK, they are the cheapest I have found on the internet for Gallardo parts.

Front crank seal and waterpump leaking too.

Fuk, does it ever end?

Yep, obviously the Australasian models have it standard as others have asked the same question.

Has a glass engine cover too, wouldn't buy it without either of these on it.

I am gutted at the money I have spent so far on repairs - and more to come.

Ive had it only 9 months and put only 1000km on it due to being stuffed around by soooo many suppliers and my job taking way too much of my personal time.

AND THEN I look on our local auction site and find a mint fully carboned extras 2008 Superleggera for only 15K more than what mine cost...AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
