Doctor thoughts needed

Mo my gf had been having this pain in her right kidney area for over 3 months now, that comes and goes. She's 23. First time it happened it was a sharp pain, and we went to the hospital where she got antibiotics, but they didn't say anything about what it was. The pain went away, but in a couple of weeks it came back, but not as a sharp pain but an annoying/painful one, but whats strange is that it seems to travel, from kidney area in the back to lower than the appendicitis cut would be in the front. Also this pain travels down her leg, and her moving affects where it hurts. So it resurfaced again a week or so ago and we went to a different hospital, they did an ultrasound and said the kidney looked fine, but there was some infection in her tests. They gave her antibiotics to take once a day for 10 days, but now its day 5 and the pain is still there. We've considered this could be from intercourse, but the docs said probably not. I'm wondering if anyone here might know what this could be.

Cheers

Disclaimer, I'm not a doctor, I'm a U.S. Navy Corpsman, and this is my line of work.

For over 3 months? Ultrasound didn't find anything? Did they try x-rays too? I want to guess and say that she could possibly have a kidney stone. If it were a kidney stone, it's very possible the hospital may have missed it on ultrasound, but not as easily on an x-ray as they stand out. I've had 2 and also had patients with them. You can feel the pain in your kidney area as well as your lower abdomen and groin area.

What kind of labs did they order for her? Was there any trace of blood in her urine? They should have done urine and blood tests to check for UTI and STD's although kidneys rarely experience pain with most common STD's. Some kidney stones have sharp jagged edges that tear into the kidneys and urethra which can cause infection so if there is a stone in there, antibiotics will only do so much if it's cutting the tissue.

As far as her pain radiating, it's very common with kidney stones. A feeling of discomfort and sharp stabbing pains along with dull radiating pain is very common. My stones gave me terrible, terrible pain that caused me to throw up and left me unable to leave the house.

If she hasn't gotten an X-Ray, I would highly recommend getting one done. I wish you two the best and I hope that this issue is resolved for her as soon as possible. I understand how painful this is and feel bad that she has to go through this.

It does sound like a stone. They could check her creatinine levels make sure its functioning ok. Tough with radiating pain since all the nerves going to the legs branch off in the back in the kidney area. If theres an infection and its pushing on the nerves it will radiate down the legs.

Not a doctor but I agree with the stone only because my best friend has them almost chronically, and that is the pain he experiences. He has passed 4 in the last two years or so, and I vividly remember him mentioning this type of reaction.

Not a doctor but I would say kidney stone or cyst on the ovary. Never had kidney stones but have witnessed them. If it is a cyst it could be hemorrhaging and has not yet ruptured. I'm doubting UTI just because these are not symptoms of one even though they can be painful at times but if there is an infection in the kidneys I would think it could pass to the urinary tract. What kind of infection was found and what tests were run? Blood work? Urinalysis?

Does she get the pain around when her period is starting? I used to have cysts on my ovaries when I was younger (13ish) that would give me debilitating cramps and had to be put on birth control to stop it.

Hubby had kidney stones. Large. Inoperable. Tried a variety of things, and finally saw a new doc and he suggested drinking citrus mixed in with water. Hubby drinks a lot of water daily (probably at least 80 ounces and he puts a squirt of lemon and/or lime juice in most times. Maybe a tablespoon of each.

Something about the citrus counteracts or reduces creatinine levels. It's amazing how a simple change in diet can lead to a kidney stone free life. I don't know if it works for everyone but it was the best (and cheapest) piece of medical advice ever received.

Wishing you and your GF the best in getting it figured out and resolved quickly.

Guess I can say, I am on. Needs further evaluation including a pyelogram and/or CT of abdomen and pelvis. This could be referred pain so need to check Gyn cause as well.

PM offline if you want to give more details.

Hope she is fine.

Thanks for all the replies. Here are some more details.

It isn't a stabbing pain, but a nagging one, constant one 24/7. The leg issue has been weird - she feels like something is tugging all over the leg, as if the nerve is affected somewhere in the back, so she thinks maybe this is the issue of the nerve as well?

See a specialist immediately...wtf are you asking on a forum for?!

Spain is a pain in the ass for this, it takes a month-month and a half to book an apt for an xray. She'll be back home within 2 weeks and will go to private doc. Managable for now and we'll see, this shit is strange.

From what you are describing , it is either a kidney stone or urniary infection . See if the local pharmacy sells phenazopyridine 100mg or 200mg. It is a urinary analgesic and should dull the pain . I would recommend an antibiotic but if it turns out not to be an infection, it sucks to take an antibiotic for the sport

If its kidney stones, can't they use ultra sound to break it up.

This is a pretty straight forward diagnosis and correction.

nobody should be in pain for days and days without having someone,at least, finding the problem.

next step.......hospital

Could be a kidney stone or back related but also could be Gyn related. Dose it happen at a certain time in her monthly cycle? Ovarian cysts, endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease can all cause back pain, lower abdominal pain as well as the symptoms she has in her leg. I would recommend she see a gynecologist. PM me if you want. Hope she gets it figured out and taken care of soon.

  • 1 year later...

so..this is really getting wierd.

this pain in the leg would come on suddenly once a month, usually around her period. last year it was pretty bad for like 7 days. So from last month on, this pain would go from foot to back - and this is like 20 days now. Again going to docs they do blood tests and give pain reliever IV's, but it doesn't help. So as of 5 days ago, leg is getting better but now her neck hurts, going into where head meets neck muscles in the back of the neck in that spot. Again, blood tests today, IV's, pain relievers like ibeprofen - nothing helps. If this is a pinched nerve, it should be affected by pain meds, no? She is basically in tears from all the stress and this dulling pain not going away for so long. And once again, either wait a long ass time for a section of MRI, or pay out of the pocket, but what part of the body to even target at this point.

Two weeks ago I had back surgery for spinal stenosis and disc problems.

My symptoms were uncontrollable nerve pain from l4/5 to my hips.

My nerves were completely blocked and felt like a continual electric shock.

I was on morphine toward the end and even that did not help until surgery.

The only way to tell what is really going on is with an mri.

When the spinal cord and canal become blocked depending on the degree of blockage, the nerves are affected.

The surgery was the only way for me to get back to normal

:iamwithstupid: I'm not a doctor, but several of my friends have had kidney stones and pretty much described exactly what you're describing here. It's worth looking into and I hope it's nothing too serious.

Get a CT scan of the abdomen to rule out appendicitis, pyelonephritis, peritonitis, or presence of any tumor in the peritoneal cavity. The abdominal and pelvic cavity can have radiating pain from various organs. Right Kidneys, pancreas, Gall Bladder and liver are all located in the right upper quadrant. Radiology report will rule out most serious problems. Wish her a speedy recovery.
