I bought this today. My second AP but my first ever steel watch.

26470ST "Navy" on blue croc strap. Rubber strap came as spare.

Compared with gold I love the low key feel.

Anyone ever buy a watch as an investment (probably not)? Is this still a thing? Is this market dying? Maybe this is self convincing on my part.

I like watches. Makes me cringe to drop $ on one. What's the point? I do appreciate the mechanicals. Others might not moving forward.

Can get a pre owned Rolex 36mm OP datejust for around 6.5k. SS bracelet, black dial, 1.8cwt diamonds around the markers, just need some convincing :D.

Would be an upgrade from my calculator watch :D.

Only buy it if you think you’d like wearing it, if you buy something which holds its value you should be happy if you happen to buy something which it will go up you are lucky but if you like the piece why would you sell it? The gain is only realized when you sell.

Few of my watches went up in value based on how much I paid but I would never sell them because I like wearing them so the value is quite irrelevant, if I get sick of them then I will sell but the money will go back into watches I am sure of that, it’s just another disease :icon_mrgreen:

Very wise and true.

I will tell you something else, it can be a slippery slope, I started with a $7k Breitling and thought wow that’s a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch, it just tells the time like my phone does, next thing you know you will be shopping in the 5 to 6 figures for watches which most of the time can’t tell the time accurately because you forgot to wind or put them in the winder then you turn around and use your phone to reset it :eusa_wall: :lol2:

So IMO a watch is the most acceptable and less frowned upon piece of jewelry a man can wear, jokes aside, that’s the reason I buy them, I simply like how they look, that’s about it LOL.

The watch market, especially for models still in production, is way too volatile to be treated as an investment of any sort. Unless you are talking about really esoteric models from Patek Philippe; or the latest trendy model from Rolex which you did not need to pay a premium on, none are really worth investing (don't forget to factor in inflation, interest and exchange rate before saying the watch gained value). Esoteric models of PP are $$$$, you will likely get a much better rate of return by using the same amount to buy real estate. And you really need to be astute and time everything right (pardon the pun :icon_mrgreen: ) on trendy new Rolex models in order to profit.

Buy whatever you prefer and can afford and treat it as a personal fashion statement, nothing more. Enjoy what you have acquired and stay happy. :)

How much do you care about beating up the watch you buy? I mean shit happens, can hit a wall and scratch/ding it. With a $500 watch it sucks but oh well, but with a $15000++ one!?? Is there insurance on this sort of thing or you just have to have the means to not care?

Doc, only if you have a house and a car and savings, then you can spend that much on a watch IMO. The idea of riding in a benz without money for gas is bad but people do it, but the idea of rolex without a nice place/car is more surreal.

Ya he is funny. I lost track of how many times he says " fcuk me dead".

He had an interesting video last week were some random friend who know nothing about watches guessed the prices of his collection. She guesses $300.00 on most of the watches. Most people have no clue about the watch market. No clue what a 10,000 dollar watch looks like.

^Very nice, A. Lange & Sohne, the most understated and likely the most under-rated good timepiece. Congrats.

+1, I love their designs. A much cleaner look than a typical Patek. Of course, to each their own.

Is it possible to apply PPF to a watch to protect it?

Thanks guys !!

The attention to detail is just amazing. The display back and the movement is second to none.

You not only have to have the means not to care, but also the mindset. And it's a tough one imo. For the most part, I can get a few dings on my Rolex or Breitling and I know my jeweler can polish them out no problem (other than the time I hit the Rolex into something and broke off the luminescent marker on the ceramic bezel. Had to send to Rolex for fixing - it was a little over a grand).

The harder one is dinging my AP, which is the rose gold case with the rubber clad bezel. You think the bezel is all rubber, but it's not - it's just a thin layer of rubber OVER rose gold. So you want to fix that tiny little nick that you look at every time you put the watch on? It's $3k at the AP repair in Florida. They have to replace the whole bezel, which is rose gold dipped in a thin layer of rubber. Shit.

So, I just deal with the ding and I'll replace the bezel when I trade the watch in. The value would be compromised more than the cost to get the watch back to perfect, so it's worth it...it's just not worth it now when I'm still wearing it 3-4 times a week.
