612 thread

In a different thread I was accused of enjoying the crackpipe when I said the 612 was a much maligned car so I thought I would start a thread, justify my opinion and see what others have to add.

After the 456, which was a nice looking car that claimed to have four seats but they were not all that and a very juicy V12. Also the 456 carried on the tradition of Ferrari build quality ie materials from a roll of a toilet paper and heinous depreciation the 612 was new dawn. The 612 was riding on a new wave of Ferrari engineering and was a bit more ground breaking.

The 612 had better build quality and slightly more usable rear seats and the looks were challenging at first. Now I think it is quite a classic looker. Bit of classic Ferrari shape here and there and if you check the prices you will be pleasantly shocked at how many there are and how much they are going for, they have dipped and on the way up.

So here is a challenge; Have a look at the classifieds for examples and find another Grand tourer 2+2 that is smooth and shapely designed and strong potential to increase in value.

I think you're alone on this one. I personally don't mind the 612 but don't think it's going to be a mega investment or "modern classic" anytime soon. Maybe gated versions. I can't get over how unsexy their droopy ass end is, which is typically the only nice part of most modern day Ferraris. Although I have to say I do like them in dark blue or this old man cruiser maroon colour: https://www.classicdriver.com/en/car/ferrar...tti/2004/368892

The 456s you mention though are beautifully shaped cars, and are steals at the moment, especially compared to what's going on with the 550M market...

Very different ballpark price wise but as far as quasi-investment GT 2+2 coupes go, my money is on the 850CSi, reliability issues and all.

612 a giant cunting shitbox that's only marginally increased in value on the coat-tails of other Ferrari's that desevedly have gone up.

They have matured and are better looking now than they were upon their release to be fair. For the money i wouldn't buy one...an M4 will do all that car will do in more comfort, better reliability and considerably faster...

Like every other Ferrari 2+2, the 612 will depreciate until it is 20+ years old. Only exceptions would be a Sessanta or a manual car – which may depreciate slower from here on. Anything else would be surprising.

And if you have not already driven one, give it a try – you will find it to be a very genteel driving car – it really is the gentleman’s Ferrari. By comparison, an FF drives much more aggressive and sporty.

If you need to carry 4 people ... In a Ferrari ... In sun, rain, or snow ... There's only one choice:

OK ... OK ... It's not going to win any beauty contests ... But ... There's something about it ...

I think the Lusso is a beautiful car, at least in the photos, if I was forced to keep it I wouldn't take a 612 for free.

The 612 reminds me of one of those silly exercises that the Hollywood tabloid magazines would do: they assemble several body parts of famous actresses together, i.e. the eyes of star A who is known to have beautiful eyes + the lips of Star B who is known for gorgeous lips + the body of star C who is known to have a perfect body etc... Ideally, the PS result would be the perfect looking woman. But that is seldom, if ever, true. In fact, the end result is anything but beautiful. The 612 follows this model: zoom in on several of its parts, e.g. a fender here or a 3/4 panel there and they look very nice on their own. Put everything together as an united whole and it just doesn't look good at all. The overall proportion of the car looks funny to begin from day one.

Looks play a paramount part on these machines. Consider another analogy: you are invited to a gala event, would you rather bring someone who doesn't excel much but is gorgeous-looking and have all the right curves at the right places or someone who is ordinary looking and proportionally non-exciting but possesses amazing culinary skills?

I'm with CApt_Chaos on this one, I like the 612, think it has aged very very well.

Will a manual 612 really be worth more, after all it is a GranTurismo type car, so actually the paddle-shifter suits the car better I think, and it doesn't have that much power really. 540hp.

The 6sp cars are actually going through the roof. Anything manual and V12 from Ferrari is going to appreciate, even the lowly 456 eventually.

I could do a manual 612, but wouldn't have that much interest in an F1 trans...

Absolutely agree with you on the character of the gearbox matching the purpose of the car however manual cars (not just 612) are attracting the premiums when a paddle shifter is also available and also reliability wise.

Unlike many Ferraris that would still hold up no matter what brand they were if the 612 wore a Benz or BMW badge it would be a 15k car by now. It doesn't look or do anything better than an old S55 or other aging performance sedan. It also has those crappy switches and plastics.

I agree. I'm not sure "doesn't look as bad as it used to" is a solid selling point. A touring car with a MT seems ridiculous to me and an old, clunky F1 tranny would be even worse.
