You are probally referring to an Epiretinal membrane......also know as an ERM, Macular Pucker, Surface Wrinkle Retinopathy, ect.. Funny, just had one in my chair 1/2 hour ago.

 

What do you want to know.......

Sorry not a specialist , Although I have been afflicted for the past 3 years. Went to eye doc about 12 times, got an eye shot , didn't help. Operation option

didn't really guaranty improvement. And will promote cataracts. Seems to be slowly getting better , which doc says can happen. Worst part it's my dominant eye.

Now using the other. Sucks but not a lifestyle changer. Good luck

Anti-vegef injections are indicated when there is cystic edema associated with the membrane. A major reason for reduction in vision is distortion of the macula and fovea architecture. It is possible to spontaneous improve....in most cases, patients maintain generally good vision. Surgical membrane peeling is generally reserved for when vision reduces to the point that the risk of surgery is outweighed by the potential for visual improvement.

Can a good whack to the head - such as being in a rear end collision resulting in concussion - cause an injury to the macula or vitreous fluid or membrane that would result in this sort of wrinkle or pucker that distorts vision?

One of the most commun causes of macular pucker is an acute posterior vitreous detachment. The jell like fluid inside the eye pulls away from the retinal surface. It is generally an aging process but can definitely be accelerated by trauma or contracoup forces (ie whiplash affect) Violent shaking the head that way can precipitate an acute PVD.
