Educate me on the Ghost

Anyone on here own one? How do you like it? Are there any major changes between the model years? What are the must have options.

Also, I wonder about reliability and service. If you spend $150-$160 on a 2012 model that's nearing the end or has no warranty left, are you asking for trouble?

^ I wondered the same. I was hesitant as it's basically a (significantly) upgraded 7 series. My current BMW (650 Vert) just had $10k worth of warrant work and we'll definitely be selling before the warranty is up. No longer a BMW fan lol.

Hey Luxeous. Sorry to hear about your Bimmer. Do you mind if I ask what the warranty work was over?

 

As for BMW V12's, they are extremely reliable. They are not prone to some of the issues more commonly found in some of their other engines: i.e.: high pressure fuel pump issues, rod bearings, etc.

 

The issues commonly found in the latest 7 Series cars are due to battery issues. It's to the point where BMW is having to replace batteries during every oil change and will not publicly admit the issue. Whether or not this is an issue with the Rolls Royce cars is up for question.

I have owned 9 BMW's. None out of warranty, seen a couple of friends try and do the CPO or "factory extended warranty" and get burned badly. I had 3 that were lemoned. I still own 2. Great drivers cars, not keepers. You should look at them as an electric tooth brush, when it is done you throw it away and get another one. Ghost is based on the last gen 7 series, a particularly unreliable vehicle.

That issue occurs on 5 series and some 3 series too. Americans don't coast so no regen.

seems like a steal for 150ish.

but I will say I am no longer a bmw fan. just sold my 15' X5m. in for service 4 times in 10 months :(

Well my friend bought a 760Li from Japan and has been battling trying to fix films in high pressure fuel pumps for many months almost daily trying to find proper material for film..

Ofcourse that is 2003 car not the modern one. Yet fixing that from official marble desk does cost 2800€/piece and yo need two pumps so cool 5600€ out of pocket.

I don't know your legislation but probably if something like this would happen in lot newer vehicle, they need to provide some part of the sum.

 

But new or newish car is always a different thing.

have a 2010 model as well, never had any problem, service and warranty included if you purchase the provalence warranty from rolls royce. best car i've owned to date, it has distrionic (drives itself) and night vision, 360 cameras, massage seats, doors open automatically, and well everyone on the road takes photos because how massive it is. check it out, take one for a spin

I was looking at a Ghost as well. The problem I came across is more to do with warranty. The factory extended warranty (called Provenance) can only be had if you purchase a car from an authorized dealership. But what's troubling with this is that the term is 2 years and at the end of the 2 years, if you want an additional factory extended warranty, you literally have to sell the car back to the dealer. They then do their process and sell it back to you with the extended warranty. This sounds like a really inefficient and complicated matter, not to mention expensive, as each time you buy and sell the car back (in CA) you pay sales tax.

 

I don't understand why RR can't just let you bring a car in to get certified and purchase a warranty from there on. I've heard they are working on this process, but no definitive answer as of yet.

 

In the meantime, I've turned my attention towards S63 or S600 Maybach. Not sure I care to own a RR Ghost w/o warranty. And a lot of the 3rd party warranties available for the Ghost seem to be questionable.

I have always wanted a rolls Royce and I have driven them all. Used Ghost is at bottom feeding prices.. new platform car coming soon (2018) look for 4 wheel drive too.

I have the provolence warranty on my ghost, 2 years, bought at 4K a year from Ogara coach. Just brought the car in for some misc small stuff, and they are covering everything no questions asked with a loaner. The rolls Royce warranty is amazing, but 2 years is plenty imo, it's a basic 7 series In a lavish form

Regrets but I never really liked any of the Rolls Royce under the BMW ownership. IMO, the Phantom is way too big and thus one needs to be driven in instead of one driving it. While the Ghost fits the owner-driven profile and it is a good and fun car to drive in the general sense, it is a BMW 7-series with a different shell. And what the shell offers is far from the original SZ-series cars when it was under RR's own ownership. Yes, the SZ-series cars were almost hopelessly outdated in terms of technology and it weights like a boat (at least 2.5 metric tons), but the coach work --- wood panels, Connolly leather, authentic bright metal works, etc... --- are second to none. And the famous "magic carpet ride" is well...magic. The Ghost simply cannot compare. Yes, the Ghost is modern and in its own right; has all the techno-gizmo and it drives and handles well but so is a BMW 7-series or an Audi S8 for that matter. Most importantly, at least from my perspective (which is subjective and biased), it just doesn't have the majestic aura, presence, ambiance or whatever one likes to call it. Pull along side a Ghost at a stop light and one hardly notices you are next to a RR. It is a driver's car; perhaps I am old school but when it comes to this genre of cars, it certainly lacks the allure of the "original" Rolls Royce. Paying that extra for the Spirit of Ecstasy when its essence is no longer there just doesn't seem right. To me, RR is opulence, splendor, grandeur and perhaps even decadent. The Ghost offers none of those at all. IMO, while the Ghost is a well-engineered saloon and generally good to drive, a RR should convey something special or in RR's vocab, bespoke. The Ghost does not. Sorry...

Which is why I would only want the factory extended warranty. But the way they do it if you wanted another extension once the current term expires is inefficient. Especially as it results in you paying sales tax each time. I take it you're getting rid of it once warranty expires?

Totally get where you are coming from here. I'm not super familiar with the SZ cars but I do think making a less expensive Rolls like the ghost was a step in the wrong direction for the brand overall. I like the car and it does feel nicer than a lot of luxury sedans out there but the BMW-ness of it just bugs me.

 

If I were to do a RR I think I'd only be able to feel good about going with the Drophead. That car has a presence on par with many exotics and rides like a dream.

Provolence is the factory extended warranty, just a max of two years, more than plenty. It's a very reliable engine and transmission, and almost every part is interchangeable with the BMW 7 series, therefore, it's nowhere near expensive like a Ferrari or lambo in terms of out if warranty repairs. And a regular scanner reads the car, the rr ghost is definitely a keeper until I decide to get the dawn, then I may get rid of it

RR definitely does not have the flare that our Lambo has on both driving or attention.

 

Not sure about a Ghost but my Wraith drives like a Cadillac Deville to me.

 

Steering is loose and the drive is very boring.

 

Was going to keep the Wraith to compliment my SVR later but thinking about keeping the Bentley Supersports and sell the Wraith.

 

RR are definitely a car for comfort and quiet if that's what you want.

 

Suicide doors are definitely fun.

I have a 2012 Ghost and its never broken down or been in the shop for anything but routine service. It is a solid car and I dont think a warranty is really necessary. I agree with Toofdoc though, in stock trim, they are very boring looking, at least to me.

I think I prefer the Ghost looks a little more than the Phantom -- slightly more modern looking and not quite as ostentatious.

 

If you could get a Phantom interior in there, that probably would do the trick...
