Drive in garage: forward or reverse?

A bit of a dumb question, but with the sensitivity of the egear/clutch wear I wonder if it is better to drive forward into the garage or back in? I know if I backed in it would take me longer since I have a pretty good driveway dip and I would need to angle at the dip to avoid scraping the bottom and then straighten accurately to make it into the garage instead of the wall. Maybe I just need more skill in driving to be able to get in faster in reverse. On the other garage side I have my Pantera, and have put a strip of black electrical tape down along the drivers side floor so I can watch the tires & tape when backing in. But that car is easier going rear in since the front has air bags to raise it high so I don't need any angle backing in from the driveway dip.

 

Any thoughts or tips on rear in? Maybe I would just get more clutch wear until I got more used to backing in from that driveway dip. However I hear slow in reverse is worse on the clutch than slow in first. Not sure how true that is though.

No offense, but I honestly think you've overthinking it dude. I used to worry about stuff like this when I had an E60 M5. I was always worried about the SMG clutch, overheating in traffic, reversing, hills, launches, etc. I can't see it making that big of a difference every time you drive the car that you should worry about it. I would always reverse in. Just makes it easier to get out. Just enjoy it and have fun!

I heard that reverse on the egear never engages the clutch fully, so you want to spend as little time in reverse as possible, and if you have a choice you definitely want to go up hills in 1st as opposed to reverse.

Never understood reversing in on a driveway with an incline. I drive in forward in first. When I back out of my garage I put in reverse till i get to the decline, pop it in neutral and coast down the driveway so as to not keep it in reverse for any length of time.

 

Trying to reverse up an inclined driveway in a lambo to me is not a good idea and I dont see the value in having your car reversed parked in your garage

This is correct. Minimize time in reverse.

Thanks all. Yes I am probably overthinking it a bit, but just trying to save some ride time before the $ clutch rebuild time comes. I have a lot of clutch left, but just trying to be a little conservative as I am slow maneuvering the car around the garage area because I also have a 4 post lift on the drivers side and of course the garage wall on the other side. My value in thinking of backing in is kind of a minimal thing, but since the front of the car is not as wide as the rear, when I park face in then the rear of the car then blocks the entire area of the garage opening so I can't really walk through the garage that well to the outside. So I either squeeze through the small space on either side of the car or exert more exercise and walk out the front door of the house instead. I know if I went rear first that I would be taking much longer in reverse to maneuver, so I think I will stay with face in. I'm not sweatin it since I only drive every couple weeks or so, but I heard horror stores of clutches burning by dragging in reverse (such as from car transporters) but was not sure how true the reverse issue was.

 

See, in the clip below it is just easier face in. Going in rear first it would take a bit more of maneuvering to straighten out the car accurately before entering the garage. You like my training wheels (via the wood in the gutter?) I since abandoned the wood after I found I could do it without scraping the front, although it is pretty close):

The way your car rolls back a little before engaging the e-gear clutch once your on the driveway would make me think that trying to back in to that spot would destroy your clutch life. Where as when backing out of your garage you wouldn't have to use much clutch life as the car would roll back on its own for the most part.

Into a flat spot I that there is only 1 way in/out of, I reverse in while the car is warm and has finished her run for the day.

 

I think that is better for it then to try and reverse it out cold when you leave or waiting forever to warm up and leave.

 

I definitely wouldn't reverse up an incline every day to park.

 

I would drive in forward and when I leave let neutral roll it down once I have enough inertia
