2012 Perf

4500 mi car... Salesperson says all is perfect except it appears that clearcoat has come off on the mirrors and that the red "star" sticker on the decklid is faded? He says he has seen a few SL's and Perf's that have had some problem with the clearcoat on the mirrors? Anyone have any thoughts ? I thought possibly someone had tried to buff the car and burned through the clearcoat and maybe dulled the sticker, but he says no.

Thanks

I think this is the same car they had forever? Did they ever sell it? They had this and a green one. My friend bought the green one. It has given him 60k flawless miles.

I wonder if it was purchased locally and traded in. What I mean is new in 2012 they had an orange one that didn't sell for a long time.

Fading would most likely happen due to exposure to sun. Is there other fading they are not mentioning? Wondering if it's been garaged, or sat outside in a dealer lot in a sunny climate? That's a more likely cause of fading as opposed to buffing. If the clear coat is intact but dull/damaged, maybe it appears faded but is scratched and creating a dull appearance.

I'd want to see it in person or have someone knowledgable look at it. I'd also want to feel it - run my fingers across to see if it's smooth (as it should be).

As for mirrors - it's possible that removing clear mask can remove clear coat. I assume it doesn't happen often - but a friend removed clear mask from his murci. I believe clear mask was on for more than a season but not sure how long. It took off some clear coat - about the size of a quarter.

I doubt it would take all clear coat off both mirrors - but if it removed SOME clear coat - maybe someone decided to take it down to paint rather than have it clear coated. This is a stretch - but maybe it's possible. I'd also want to see what they mirrors look like, and feel like, before going further.

Makes me wonder if there are other "stories" attached to the car. IMO details like this aren't consistent with a really well cared for car - but maybe that doesn't hold true here. Maybe it's a great car with bad mirrors and some faded decals.

Good luck!

I agree with the above..my fingers are crossed. I am going to have a 3rd party PPI done and that will maybe help. The dealer is going to try and re clear the mirrors and do something with the decal.... I just wonder why that did not go ahead and take care of these two things over the month's that they have had the car for sale.... obviously these are the first two things that jump out at you.

Thank you all for the feedback!!

most likely UV damage from sun for both parts...

1) vinyl doesn't like UV. obviously there's a lot of decals that are more resistant to UV and last longer than cheaper vinyl, but even good stuff doesn't like the sun after a while. it'll try out, and get brittle. (if you've ever tried to remove decals after like 3-5 years). some pigments and colors are more PRONE to color fading than others. this may be why the red is "more" faded than the other colors. if you LOOK at the rear deck decal, and it seems like the white or green portions look good, then most likely the pigmentation in the red is much less stable and reacting to UV quicker. shouldn't be a huge concern. may just simply need a new decal ordered from Lambo, or a good graphic shop can probably cut you a new red piece and just replace that portion.

2) UV tends to react a lot with clear coats (cheaper clear) and also the RESIN used in carbon fiber. again, probably a reason why the clear seems to be dull or fading on the CF mirrors but not the body. if the rest of the body looks good, but mirrors look faded, that might actually be further than than just the clear coat. it maybe the resins used in the carbon fiber that is "clouding" up. i've seen this happen on a lot of cheaper made CF parts sold on eBay, or made in china. it's unfortunate and inexcusable that Lambo OEM parts would or should do that. but it does happen. even a bad "batch" of resin can do this.

again, comparing those problematic areas to the rest of the surface of the car should help determine if it's an isolated UV issue, or if it's just been POORLY treated (sitting in sun it's whole life).

All good points. Thanks for your input!
