Took the wrong Lambo out today...

Recommended Posts

Was gonna run home and grab my Countach, but figured he may be gone when I get back. Met the owner, nice guy. Also has an LM002. Said he bought the Countach the over 10 years ago with a blown motor for 60k.

I found an -87 once with a leaking head gasket for 47k. But I was a poor student so I couldn't buy it......

I look back at my first few years of my adult life and I really regret it. If I would have gone balls to the wall, invested and saved way more, I would have been able to afford a car like the 87 you mentioned, possibly. I just hope that I can get one soon before they reach astronomical prices, but the FI QV's are not doing too well at the moment so hopefully there's a chance I get to pick one up in the next 3 years. :)

Well that is an interesting way of keeping the heat down in the engine compartment, remove all of the louvers. All kidding aside I bet it helps.

I had my Countach out yesterday and after a few spirited runs I had the AC fan cranked up to the max and the heat was just radiating into the cabin.

Countach A/C state of the art lol :icon_mrgreen:

How can i forget being stuck on a highway on a hot summer day cooking, doors wide open, battery getting ready to discharge and getting weird looks from other motorists thinking this dude in the Lambo thinks he is too cool.

A/C in my Countach works pretty good for a Countach.. In 100 deg weather it keeps me from breaking a sweat. If I move to AZ to help, Im going to tint the windows.

Contrary to popular belief it does get hot in Toronto and Buffalo NY for about two weeks. :icon_mrgreen:

I can remember sitting in traffic on the peace bridge trying to get back from a day a Sherkston beach in early July in my 1970 Plymouth Road Runner.

It was in the high nineties with damn 80 plus percent humidity, I had all the windows rolled down and the heater blasting so I wouldn't boil over on the bridge.

I was so god damn hot I thought I was going to pass out. A big no thank you in a Countach, I think the car would just spontaneously combust.

So some questions:

1) Why does the Countach have such a lousy air conditioner? If it was a premium car, wouldn't they have put a decent air conditioner in it? I know cars back then had inefficient air conditioners by today's standards, but they would freeze you out of the car a lot of them

2) What does "FI QV" mean (Doc_K's post)?

You had the heater blasting in that weather?

1.) Space constraints, plus it was the 80's.

2.) Fuel injected.

I see, however what did it being the 80s have to do with it?

Either the engine over heats or you sweat.

Pick what you prefer!

Ahh, okay, he was doing it to keep the engine cool, I thought he had mis-typed or something. I am not familiar with Countachs and their various quirks.

All of the Countach models produced prior to 1988 had shitty AC.

There are typically only two AC vents each being approximately 2" x 3.5" located below the stereo in the transmission tunnel.

(Some of the earlier 400 series cars had four round ones on top of and on the sides of the transmission tunnel).

Because of this you simply do not have sufficient ducting inside the Countach to distribute the AC efficiently.

And when you crank the AC fan up to the max your just forcing air across the evaporator in hopes that it will slow all of the heat radiating from the engine behind you.

In 1988.5 and 90 Lamborghini redesigned the entire system and improved it greatly compared to the earlier models.

You can see the vents in the photos below, on the second photo the vent grills are upside down which makes the system totally useless.

My car is an 87 and has the side air vents as well. Makes a big difference.

Sorry about that, I stand corrected.

I guess the upgrades were put in place earlier than I thought. (Always learning something new about the Countach)

Without a doubt those upgrades were a big difference in overall performance.

My AC blows cold but it is not sufficient due to the earlier mentioned issues with ducting and the small vents.

The only thing I could possibly do to help matters would be to install insulation on the firewall between the cabin and engine bay and on the underside of the transmission tunnel.

I am certain it would help however it would be somewhat unsightly and be a noticeable deviation from the stock appearance.

I usually just go for earlier drives in the summer before the temperatures get too hot and all of the idiots wake up.

Earlier drives (less Idiots + cooler temperatures = more fun).

You still took out the right car. I love the Countach, but the Diablo SV is still the sexiest design of the 20th Century.

the A/C in my countach was the worst, it wasn't much better in early Diablo's. It's kinda there but that's about it. Audi seemed to solve the problem when the Murci came along.
