Can't decide, need advice (S63/G500 4x4)

So I have no idea why I'm having such a hard time deciding on what to replace our Range Rover with. Have the current body style but it's out of warranty. So it gives me an opportunity to find something new. Technically nothing's wrong with it, so it's not like a ticking time bomb thing.

But the two cars I'm considering to trade it for would be the S63 sedan or G500 4x4 squared. This is going to be mostly driven by the wife with the kids. Such to say it'll do street driving in the city. She doesn't care between the two so there isn't a biased opinion from her side.

But given the two choices what would you guys do? Or sit tight and wait for something else to come along?

Thoughts?

S63 no contest that square box on wheels cool to look at but it is borderline undrivable unless you want it for off-roading (flame suit on :icon_mrgreen: )

I have to agree with Fortis. If you plan on carting the kids and running errands in it, a car that wont fit into ANY parking garage is probably less then ideal.....

4x4 is an awesome toy and part time driver. I’ve had one for 6 months and love it but only drive it a couple hundred miles a month. It’s a handful and not easy to get in and out.

I actually replaced my S63 with the 4x4. S is perfect. That’s also what makes it a little boring.

My guess is you guys will love the 4x4 and then it will wear you out. You’ll never love the S but will occasionally realize how great it is.

S will cost you 40k a year. 4x4 will cost you 4k a year. Heads up they did decide to build more in 2018.

My Vote =S63

Rides, corners, brakes better than an SUV...so safer for family IMO.

But, wife previously drove a SUV Range Rover.

Does she really want a sedan?

I can agree the G500 is rough riding so your wife should drive first.

Good luck in your decision.

S63 is obvious choice but the 4x4 squared is just crazy and your kids will love it whereas the s will just be another car. Depending on how long you keep your cars you could get the s and then the 2019 squared as the vehicle will be all new then with a wider platform.

If you do not buy drop down steps the your family not be happy with the 4x4 Squared. I just saw on FB that Mercedes is stopping production on them! It is more of a toy then a daily driver (unless your me)

Thanks guys for all the feedback. You all are a lot sensible than I imagined :D

For some reason I would have imagined that the G would have garnered more votes, but seems like the S is the better (perhaps more obvious choice).

In regards to the long wheelbase RR, for us I think its more of just moving on and trying out a different brand altogether. Will consider RR again when the next gen hits the market.

Thanks again all!

Personally, I wouldn't DD with my family any vehicle designed in the 70's. 4X4 is a toy, a really cool toy, but nothing more.

Which is exactly why you should DD your Bronco!!!

I dd my lifted tundra. Just can't do garages and I avoid tight city parking. Still have done 42k miles in less than 2 years. 4x4 squared would get my vote.

A toy and a useful farm truck, nothing more.

Tire pressures have to be 24 psi or less in order to get it into my garage. 37 inch tires with 6 inches of body and suspension lift.

Since it's a wife & kids-mobile, the S63. Wife will hate you for making her scale the G 4X4 and it's not exactly a comfortable drive or ride either when compared to the S.

What about going in the middle? GLS63 AMG?

It's not as crazy as the G 4x4 but will have way more utility to throw stuff in than the S63, but has the same engine as the S63? Otherwise S63 AMG, the G4x4 has to be so difficult to drive in daily usage

I have been looking at the G Wagen squared as well, any thoughts on future values on them? I dont mind spending the 250k, I just dont want to lose 100k in a year or two.

How are these even competitors? I thought the G squared was almost 100k more than the S63?

I wasn't comparing them within the parameter of pricing. More so that we have a potential car to get rid of and these two were at the top of our choices. One a sensible daily, the other a wacky bonkers SUV.

As strange as it may sound the regular G doesn't do it for me. The 4x4 square would be the only G class I'd consider simply based on it's uniqueness.

Gotcha, fair enough. Reminds me of when I was cross-shopping the G63 and a Bentley CGT. Made no sense at all, opposite ends of the spectrum like your two choices. In the end I got both :icon_mrgreen: You have a good problem to have, good luck.
