Challenger Hellcat

Anyone here own one? They are heavily discounting the 16s right now, found a black/black 6spd for $15k off MSRP, thinking I am going to go and buy it. Just wondering if anyone on here has one and how they like it? I dont normally want anything to do with American made cars but I cant seem to fight the tire melting appeal of this thing.

Paging FEVIPER

I was heavily considering a used one for a daily if my Gallardo sells. About the only thing that appeals to me for a sub 60k car. I drove a purple charger hellcat and it seemed great!

Not much is going to keep up with you from a roll, in stock form, and lightly modded that are downright fast. While it's not a Hellcat, I've had a few Challenger and Charger rentals. The Challenger feels like a better buy for the money and with a stick would be even more fun.

Can anyone comment on how the trans are holding up?

There was one semi-local that I knew of that was sitting on a hoist for months on end trying to get parts after it had gernaded the trans (not long after release).

I love the power and the idea behind the car and would have one in a heartbeat, but i just don't think they can make them "last". Hope I'm wrong.

It's a sweet ride with lots of visceral appeal. One guy on fchat who seemingly owns every late model exotic and sports car calls it one of the most fun cars he owns and would buy it just for the sound!

Looking at the new '17 ZL1, not sure I'd take the Hellcat over that. For pure drag stuff and power mods sure, maybe the look too if that's your thing, but all around the ZL1 will outhandle it by a good amount, and isn't a whole lot slower if any in stock condition.

I guess it depends on the rest of your current garage.

I'm a member on forums. Haven't seen many trans issues. Blower, driveshaft, clutch are the more likely issues.

Call me crazy but I think the Charger is the car to get. The challenger is never going to be a sports coupe, so why bother other than it being a little lighter weight? Also the longer wheelbase in the charger will help keep it pointed in the right direction. If you're going to have a highway monster why not get the full four door and enjoy it for what it is?

Like Whiteout said, not much sub $300k is going to touch it from a 50mph roll, and certainly nothing with 4 doors.

I thought the blower was supposed to be Veyron level engineering?

It's fascinating that a production car of this power is not quite bulletproof. You'd expect issues with the aftermarket attempts not factory.

I think the Charger might be better than the Challenger.

However, no manual transmission. Which I'd say is a sticking point if this is your only fun car........not a big deal if not, or you have other manual cars to get the fix.

Charger all the way over the Challenger. Curious what was the MSRP you were able to get $15k off?

I have driven my friend's Hellcat several times and a fun car indeed and a great daily driver. May I suggest you test drive the 2017 Camaro ZL1 first? The sticker is around $62k and for a four seater and 650 HP it is a great car and more fun to drive then the Hellcat. The Hellcat is fun in a straight line but feels heavy in turns, suspension okay, brakes okay. The ZL1 suspension and all around fun car as a daily I feel would be a bigger hit for you.

I currently have a supercharged 2015 Camaro Z/28 and love the car. The suspension and brakes are amazing and the LS7 motor with the mods is incredible. I have raced my friend's Hellcat several times from a stop and rolling and was close but did beat him every time (my car is running 718 whp). With that said their are some stock 2015 Z/28 out there for $45-50k range with less than 8k miles. It is a pretty fun car and would also make a fun daily driver. A lot of fun options out there for the price point. Stock the Z/28 runs 500 HP from the LS7 but on a windy road their is no way the Hellcat will keep up just because the Z will out brake and handle the Hellcat. Keep us posted what you end up buying!

Excellent suggestion.

To be fair, I didn't think the Z/28 was already "that cheap" weren't they close to $80K new?

For that price, damn it's tempting! ESPECIALLY if you want to modify it. The LS7 is a beast and seems to be a great fit in that car.

Correct new the Z/28 sold for $76k. They took a big hit because so many people thought they were too track focused. BUT, that is what I personally love about the car - aggressive handling and braking. I honestly can not say enough good things about the car and how it handles. the carbon ceramic brakes are amazing. The Z/28 will be just like the 69 Camaro Z's that are worth a fortune now because of the rarity of the car. Not saying I will hold onto the car that long but it will be one of those cars in 30 years. I have only seen one other Z here where I live. With that said though their are only a handful of Hellcats here too.

The brakes I've heard are UNREAL, to the tune of during development they'd actually spin the tire on the wheel. So they have to grind the interior of the wheel giving the tire something to grip to!

If your looking for a comfortable car that has daily driver characteristics, but has a rowdy side to it...this is it. I had the dealer installl a pulley, tune, injectors and it is worthless without drag radials. Still have the stock tires on it and I can roll on the power at 80 and melt the tires. Fun but not practical😄 Stock form is plenty fun and much more useable.

However if you are looking for something that has a sporty feel to it. This is not it. They used the same theory that they did back in the muscle car days. Which was take an otherwise heavy daily driver and add stupid amounts of power. That appealed to me so I like it, but if I was wanting a true sport car that I could take out to the road course, I'd look elsewhere. Personally I'm not a fan of the new Camaros, although the numbers are impressive... I'd suggest a GT350 or GT350R for that.

Also there is something to be said on the Charger vs Challenger. I like them both and will get a Charger Hellcat once the dealers quit asking for the moon. 4 door with 707 = win. And I dont think you would loose any of the fun that a 2dr version offers.

Thanks for all the info guys!

Negative on the ZL1, I hate the styling of the Camaros. Not really looking for something that handles well, I've got quite a few cars are specifically tuned for handling so thats not a big concern on this one.

Also a negative on the Charger, I am not a big fan of the styling and I already have quite a few 4 door cars, looking for a 2 door this time. Also has to be 6speed.

What FEVIPER described above is exactly what I am looking for by the sounds of it. Going to go and drive it this Saturday and likely sign the deal.

Also for whoever was asking about the pricing, I am in Canada so MSRP is between $82 and $84k. They have a big promo on to clear out all the 16s right now so the black/black 6speed I found only has 10km on it (not a demo or anything, just been sitting in the showroom) is discounted down to $69k. Cant really compete with that deal!

Maybe wait for this...

Looks like dodge is making a more ridiculous version of the hellcat. I'm throwing a guess at twin turbos and 1000hp :icon_super:

These cars are a fcuking steal at around 60k. I was planning on swapping my grand cherokee on the hellcat version, but now I'm thinking of keeping my grand cherokee and just adding a challenger instead.

I've heard rumors that it's going for 9's stock.
