One of the most significant cars of all time is the 275 GTB. A Gran Turismo Berlinetta embodies everything that is right with the motoring world. For one lucky customer, Maranello has built a modern interpretation upon the chassis of the F12berlinetta. When it arrived in Daytona for Finali Mondiali, we instantly knew it was something special. Indeed, Special Project 275 RW used the engine and transmission of the F12 tdf along with a wider track width on the rear. Details have been scarce until now, but a press release last night confirms many of our assumptions.

 

Vents in the front fenders are the most prominent throwback to the classic design. Indentations behind the windows and an aluminum gas cap evoke memories of the race prepped 275 that won the GT class at Le Mans in ’65. The paint scheme of Ecurie Francorchamps and carbon fiber is an homage to the winning team. Within reason, Ferrari will build anything your heart desires, and we hope to see this car at Cavallino next month. Sorry but not feeling it at all. The J50 is way better looking IMO. And someone obviously had gone vent-happy at the styling department.

Am I the only one that thinks Ferrari made a huge mistake by ditching Pininfarina? Most of the recent cars just don't do it for me. The newer Ferraris I see are all being driven by city chicks or people who don't know anything about cars.

Umm...did someone at the styling department accidentally submitted an update of the Maser GT to Ferrari instead? :eusa_wall:

 

Admittedly that did come up in my mind too.

 

For all the Ferrari hate out there, some background reference for the styling...two standard 275 GTB/4 cars, and the 275 GTB/4 Competizione which is more in line with this new special edition:

I wouldn't be so quick to judge cars on who drives them. Every high end car has their good and bad clientele rap....

 

As far as Pininfarina, I don't know what happened exactly there. Keep in mind that Pininfarina was the "company" name and the actual designers themselves were not quite as publicly acknowledged.

 

Leonardo Fioravanti is the man in question behind that modern Pininfarina brand name.....he was responsible for the Daytona, 308, 512 BB, 288 GTO, F40. That's a formidable list of cars to sign off on.

 

He was to Pininfarina what Marcello Gandini was to Bertone during the golden era of Lamborghini from the Miura to the Diablo. Luckily Gandini has his name on those cars.

 

Lamborghini dropped Bertone somewhere around the time of the 6.0 Diablo for Luc Donderwolke, while Ferrari abandoned Pininfarina at a later date but I'm not sure exactly when. The luster of an Italian designer surely ended around the turn of the century as I believe the Enzo was done by a Japanese designer, and probably the 430 too.

 

The Lambo wedge has been relatively easy to keep updating while producing new inspired Ferraris is always somewhat of a clean sheet design. Only the 911 is easier to update...

 

I may be a bit of a Ferrari homer but I'm less critical of their designs because they never carry a design evolution for very long. The Boxer lasted about 10 years, the TR 10 years, the 308/328 about 15 years, the 348/355 about 10, 360/430 about 10. The Gallardo will easily outpace these cars I'm sure thru the Hurucan development and beyond.

 

Ferrari could probably get away with making a 2017 Testarossa or Boxer or F40/F50, and it would probably look great, but they choose not too.

 

I'd love to see a new Lambo that looks like something completely different from a Countach successor....proper front engine and what not.
