Aventador - Warranties, Worst Case, Blown Engine

No, I haven't blown an engine... yet. I'm just curious how much y'all would hypothesize a WORST CASE SCENARIO repair would be on a 2012 or 2013 Aventador... I'm considering buying one, and the only thing that's holding me back is the lack of warranty. From what I've gathered a 3rd party warranty can be a dicey/shady proposition - Ben Evans appears to be a scam artist, and it sounds like it's an industry that can't be trusted, so a warranty is out of the question. If the engine were to crack or blow, or I throw a rod, how much do you estimate it would cost to replace it with a brand new Aventador engine? Hopefully no more than $100,000? How long do you think it would take the dealership to do the repair? I saw the thread on the Gallardo in Germany, and I believe that cost the guy $50,000 for a new engine, so I figure just double it ($100,000)- yes, very precise calculations on my part. I do understand that the likelihood of the engine cracking is very low if the car is well maintained, but I'm only willing to purchase it if I can gauge some worst-case scenarios. What do y'all think... no more than $100,000 right? I assume they'd be able to put a new 2017 Aventador engine in it fairly easily, since the car is still in production, correct? I assume other parts are readily available as well? How long do you think it'd be in the shop? Thanks for your help, I realize this is a newb question, but hey, it's my first post - longtime lurker and big time forum fan. Dual post to Power/Talk.

You can get extended factory warranty/CPO

I think 100k is high. Engine can be rebuilt, doesn't need to be replaced.

Compatibility of hard parts over the years should be pretty good, unless they added/changed various sensors. The newer cars with the engine start/stop may have some sensors that the 13 didn't have, so be wary of that.

In all honestly, unless you really abuse the car or suffer some kind of bizarre mechanical failure, the odds of throwing a rod on a stock motor are almost zero. You can spin a bearing and smoke the bottom end if you abuse it, but that holds true for every car in existence. I would be much more concerned with clutch/transmission issues handing you a 5 figure repair bill than I would popping the motor. The lambo V12 hasn't changed a ton over the years and they aren't know for suffering massive failures.

Yeah it can eat $10k in a hurry at any point in time, but it's a pretty slim chance it eats $50k. Slim enough I wouldn't hedge it with an extended warranty.

If it were me, and it isn't, I wouldn't buy a 2012 without it coming from a Lamborghini store and carrying with it a CPO warranty. I don't advocate those warranties a ton on most cars, but this particular car I certainly would. Everyone is leary of the car for a reason, I would hate to see you be the guy that finds out why.

I doubt 100k would be what an engine would cost, but the engine isn't what I would be worried about, like emanon said. I would be more worried about big ancillary stuff, computers, egear pumps/accumulator, transmission failure....

I had a seized engine on a 5.5 bi turbo amg that cost me $108k (canadian $) to replace at mercedes. My bmw m6 engine started eating oil and when bmw replaced the engine if it wasn't for warranty it was a 67k (cnd) bill.Had an f1 actuator leak on a f430 that cost 25k to fix. I doubt 100k does it for a blown aventador engine. I remember I lost the gas cap on my murcielago even that was 1k

I bought my first Lambo in 99. I was worried about the same thing. I've owned Lambos continuously since my first one. Been around a bunch of Lambo guys most of that period of time and not once have I ever heard of anyone having that big of a disaster happen. I have heard of horror stories on tesrarossas and 6 figure repairs. However I'm sure somewhere there's been someone that's blown up their Lambo. I did see guys have problems that were hanging twin turbos on their cars-but that's self inflicted.

3rd party warrantees ain't worth the paper they are written on IMO. I used to sell leads to some of the extended service contract scam artists back in the early 2000's before the FTC cracked down on them.

Thanks for the input y'all.

It sounds like my best bet would be to... #1. Restrict the Aventador quest to the Official Lamborghini Dealerships only in order to make sure it comes with an extended warranty or certified pre-owned warranty... I didn't know they offered these on cars this old that had long-expired original warranties. #2. Possibly ditch the idea of a 2012, and focus on a 2013, as I keep hearing about electronic gremlins and other issues with the 2012's.

Any idea how long the dealership issues their CPO/Extended warranties for? 1 year? I'll call around, but any extra info is appreciated.

If anybody has any additional input or Aventador repair experiences, I'd be interested to hear 'em. Thanks y'all!!!

It's wise to be concerned to a certain degree but living your life on "what ifs" is very stressful and unfulfilling, you can do as much research as you want, these cars are very unpredictable, new and old, if this is your passion and you are a sucker for punishment LOL you either bite the bullet or you will always live wondering.

What if the used out of warranty car you buy will run flawlessly for the next 50 years but the new one under warranty doesn't and it spends half of its time with you in the workshop?

There is only one way to find out, stop wondering and bite the bullet, worry about the problems when and if they ever arise.

Good luck to you.

LaSalle Warranty...

So, in shooting the breeze with a Lamborghini Dealership Sales Rep over the phone, he suggested that if I want a warranty, I get it through LaSalle Warranty. I was a little surprised he mentioned it - he acted like it was pretty standard.

Does anyone have any information about LaSalle? Yes, I understand the cost may not justify the probability of needing it, but it will give me peace of mind - assuming they will actually make good on any claims. Any info on LaSalle is appreciated.

Oh....this is so true! ....and not just about cars.

If you have to worry about it to the point where it's stressful to drive the car how you want to, it's not worth it.

The factory offers an extended warranty and that's the only route I'd go. Trust me when I say it's worth every cent.
