Belt and tensioner on 2003 car

Afternoon,

 

I had found some references to changing the belt on a 640 which looked painful, does anybody have any info on changing the belt on the earlier cars ?

 

I also have what appears to be a bad bearing - you can hear the funny dragging type noise they make, I will investigate - what can be removed with the engine still in situ ?

I would go ahead and take out the muffler and the secondary cats to make access much easier. You can climb into the muffler area to make reaching the components easier too.

 

Here's the instructions:

 

The operation can be carried out when the engine is on board.

. Loose the alternator adjuster lock screw (4).

. Unscrew completely the lock nut (1) and the alternator adjuster (2) to give the

alternator the maximum stroke.

. Remove the belt tensioner (3) by means of a 15 mm wrench.

. push on the belt tensioner (3), push the alternator towards the center of the engine

and make the belt slide outside the alternator pulley; then push the alternator

towards the outside.

. make the belt slide outside the power steering pump, the air conditioning system,

the water pump and the engine pulleys and then remove the belt.

 

During the assembly

. Make the auxiliary belt slide on the power steering pump, air conditioning system, water pump

and engine pulleys.

. Move the alternator towards the center of the engine and make the belt slide on the alternator

pulley by pressing the belt tensioner.

. Check for the belt correct positioning in the pulley races; the A/C compressor pulley has 5

races while the belt has 4 races; the engine side race of each pulley is to be left free.

. Lock the belt tensioner.

. Make the belt vibrate by means of the belt tension check tool and operate on the

adjuster screw () until the belt resonance frequency reaches 155 Hz ± 5Hz.

. Tighten the alternator adjuster mounting screw and the adjuster lock nut; lock the

alternator mounting bolts.

. Run the engine at idle speed to adjust the belt and then turn it off and let it cool.

. When the engine is cold, check the belt tension again and adjust it if necessary.

I love some of the translations. I am currently changing the cam belt on a Maserati and they refer to the tensioner as a "belt stretcher".

Nice to see you on here as well as PH. It's an hours work. Pull out the heatshields, untension the belt, as per any serpentine belt. There's a long ally sleeve to remove so you an actually get the belt out; Long bolt on the tensioner frame, remove that, pull out sleeve, remove belt. Be careful not to overtension this bolt on putting it all back together, as you can squash the sleeve, and make the belt run out of line and possibly jump off the pulleys.

 

I had a noisy power steering pump, sounded like an idler or alternator. Got much worse under steering or lifting load. Had started to shred the belt too, due to the load of the partially seized pump. Could be that. I went through several belts before I fixed it. There is a small amount of play in all of the idler pulleys, but no noise when they're spun.
