So it starts... Well time to time anyway.

Thing is for all my ownership, which I have not driven car so much starter is stucking "on" what I think is from clutch dust not letting starter gear to return. So engine has to come out so I can see it. Yes, if starter needs to come out engine has to come out.

It starts by clearing much of the stuff out, exhaust, cooling pipes, part of chassi, few tubes and some sockets.

Fluids coming out.

by experience I know with these cars you need to have desent size pucket where to drain them, although Diablo "only" got 14 liters motor oil.

I suspect gearbox oil and diff oil has not come out for some time, maybe in last centuary...

Gear lever asembly needs to come out, it come out underneath.

post-7319-1529425877_thumb.jpg

As you can see, rubber supports are looking bad outside, usually they are good inside, but they are so cheap to change as you are there...

post-7319-1529425917_thumb.jpg

Driveshafts needs to detach from engine.

Last time right side driveshaft was forgot to torque... it was loose, but did not "pop" open like they should.

post-7319-1529425951_thumb.jpg

This how I lift car up.

What I desided to do was pull out clutch slave cylinder from engine without bleeding fluid. Compleat system is new from few years ago, so it was easy to remove when I grease it properly and fluid is fresh anyway.

I had to extend my engine lift, regular "chinese" engine hoist does not reach.

But engine comes out. I left wire loom on engine, found it much easier.

post-7319-1529426178_thumb.jpg

180cm is quite long.

post-7319-1529426220_thumb.jpg

And there it is. Not so pad to take out, easier then Ferrari BB/Testarossa engine, all hoses are better located in Lamborghini.

And to reach issue in hand:

post-7319-1529426398_thumb.jpg

heatshield out and starter out.

post-7319-1529426435_thumb.jpg

and here is what is wrong, after all it was not pinion; Stupid Bosch solenoid does not move at all!

post-7319-1529426484_thumb.jpg

THis is issue with solenoid; dry grease what was washed away and solenoid mover freely.

Starter disasembly:

Remove grease cup and remove loking washer

post-7319-1529426655.jpg

Two nuts out and note there are shims under loking washer.

post-7319-1529426703.jpg

Unbolt solenoid fork rod.

post-7319-1529426734.jpg

Slide casing open:

post-7319-1529426766.jpg

With two nuts, remove long rod studs that are bolted.

post-7319-1529426802.jpg

Slide motorshaft out and this is important; Fork needs to be exactly this way as in picture, note that form of fork is different on each side.

post-7319-1529426834.jpg

To remove bendix gear, remove lock washer as in picture.

post-7319-1529426867.jpg

...and there is starter on table.

Pulling gearbox to see if there needs to be seals changed and how clutch is looking.

Gearbox come out when you remove clutch leaver, mark it before you do.

post-7319-1529426985.jpg

Clutch looks pretty good, very clean and seems to have much surface, I have spare change set, but I do not change clutch, I will not even open it.

post-7319-1529427002_thumb.jpg

Att least one clutch have being changed, but I have when mechanics leave parts dirty... No leaks, I am not going to change any seals this time. Engine comes out easy, so no big deal.

post-7319-1529427061_thumb.jpg

...So I washed gearbox with Pineline (pine oil soap) that is very efective and does not remove zink.

post-7319-1529427102.jpg

Couple of pictures from gearbox.

post-7319-1529427149.jpg

Do note that it is VT gearbox casing, but without front wheel drive.

I removed engine electrical harnes,

post-7319-1529427311_thumb.jpg

I made mistake to remove plenum and oil catch can seperately, they need to come out same time.

post-7319-1529427355_thumb.jpg

Middle of block is pool of old washers, dirt and water. Not a leak from engine.

post-7319-1529427391_thumb.jpg

I washed middle of block and outside of engine with pineline. sparyer for soap and other one for water.

post-7319-1529427432_thumb.jpg

There is engine number, mine is #1019

Engine version is "L 522"

THis is 19th VT engine, they started next generation of engine from number "1000" , first one of these "ibrid" cars is "12834"

You need size 50mm hex tool for those spark plug bolts, yes I have socket for those in my garage.

post-7319-1529427939_thumb.jpg

Distributor and phase sensor got 180 degree "change" to go wrong.

post-7319-1529427972_thumb.jpg

48-valves... that is seriously lot of them.

Cam cover gaskets did not leak, except from ends and small amount to sparkplug, what was caused by too little torque on their bolts.

post-7319-1529428009_thumb.jpg

Chain is tight, I got VT engine, so it is double.

It have not even touch upper guide on valve cover, have to how lower ones look.

post-7319-1529428054_thumb.jpg

What is causing oil leak, is o-ring att end plates, all of them, are flat. THey must be original, because they are re-used with silicone.

Those o-rings are not in pre VT-engines, they have regular flat gasket, might work better.

Starter motor assembly highlights after cleaning ans re-grease; hard part with it is to get front lock ring back on, this is best method I could think of.

post-7319-1529428616_thumb.jpg

How to get brushes in is set bolts to hold them in while you slide rotor through.

Cam cover paint was pealing off, so I power jet washed them, it was one of those Kärcher machines with hot water. Nailed them to asfalt with board and this is how much I removed only with water.

post-7319-1529428766_thumb.jpg

Enginebay needs to get washed, so pushed car out and shielded most of important ports.

post-7319-1529429098_thumb.jpg

And it was dusty, note how paint in heatshields comes of only with washing.

post-7319-1529429125_thumb.jpg

So I washed rest off with paint thinner

post-7319-1529429164.jpg

and gave fresh coat of aluminium paint.

Diablo kind of got two engines together, because of engine managment and this car had run out of balance because not so many know how to balance them, there can be difference between side if balance is out.

This side there is dry mist inside plenum.

post-7319-1529429407_thumb.jpg

This side there is oil breath tube coming in and oil have cumulated in.

post-7319-1529429375_thumb.jpg

I gave them clean up. Nice to see, that intake trumpets, are polished.

post-7319-1529429505_thumb.jpg

There was odd aluminium shim under there, it did not open gasget, but didn't seat cover correctly,

post-7319-1529429617_thumb.jpg

I re-shimmed cover

Driveshafts are leaking grease, not widely all over like if boot would be broken, but between flange and CV-joint.

post-7319-1529430616.jpg

I washed hubs clean.

post-7319-1529430644_thumb.jpg

Issue with CV-joint is copper washer between there, it is one use only and if driveshafts are removed, they should be replaced, or attleast heated.

This one in picture got spread and from there missaligned.

post-7319-1529430675_thumb.jpg

I did not find correct Löbro washer, but lukily Porsche 911 got cheaper paper version that will fit. Local Porsche service guy did not even know what it was, when I asked hem to retrive me "four more"

Thanks.

Getting closer to present situaton; Valve clearance is good to check, when engine is out and since there was leak from cover ends.

3 shims where changed to other place and needen four new ones mostly +.05

post-7319-1529433890_thumb.jpg

I bended couple of screwdrivers to get sims out, after poping vacuum out under them, pulled out with magnet. Sims are same with Ferrari four valve engines and because we do not have Lamborghini dealer in my country (my car is only coupe and then there are two roadsters) , I bouought them from Ferrari. 13€/each

I am on east side of Helsinki, but visit Turku for sports car event that is every year week before midsommer (last weekend)

People might not be as happy or friendly what you are used to, but I think famous metal band sums it right in their lyrics (translated) "In this cold country where winter is long and summer is included"

Also it is said that when mankind will send people to Mars, they should be Finns, because we are totally fine to sit in small dark room in silence sorounded everlasting cold and darkness, not seeing sunlight through small windows for months after another, no need to say any word to anyone else in room for days, no need to small talk, would not care to know name for peolpe next to you and be totally fine without to ask "how are you?" and suspect anyone who does that for reason for this guestion...
