Ultimate camper/ expedition vehicle?: Earthroamer

Ive followed this company for a while reading some of the owners blogs and watching some videos about these trucks.

They take a Ford F550 diesel and then completely overhaul it and what makes this different then other RV campers is they turn it into a completely self sufficient expedition vehicle. It has solar panels to generate electricity, it can store 135 gallons of potable water along with separate grey water and black water tanks.

Has a 700 mile range and you can put in larger fuel tanks.

The options list is pretty incredible and the interiors are top tier.

Prices range from $260k-500k for a fully loaded top of the line dual extended cab with tile and granite counters etc..

There are other companies doing similar things with UNIMOGS and Ford vans but I think this is the best all around vehicle package.

It seems like a ton of money but when you compare them to the $500-1.M "land yachts" RV'S you see people driving and parking at the KOA'S and are strictly for pavement use,I love the idea of being able to drive to your favorite national park...then drive off into wherever the hell you like and be completely self sufficient for as long as you like.

Here are some videos and pictures. I thought you guys might find them cool too.

Here's some owners I follow on facebook that drive all over the country(ies) with theres. Its cool to see how much they do with it.

And if the Ford is too big or too much, they make a pretty cool Wrangler conversion

Seems like a very good use of space. Before looking at the interior my first thought was that the cabin of that thing would be the size of a bathroom stall, and not a handicapped one lol. If I were going to the Arctic or the middle of the desert then I could see the worth but for most normal treks it seems overkill. Still cool though!

Earthroamers are sweet. They are located about 30 mins from me, so I get to see the trucks once in a while. My company also supplied some granite counters for one of the trucks, that was cool.

No doubt the Unicat is every bit as capable, maybe even more so,but what an eye sore

Off-road, to say the unimog (unicat) is just slightly more capable, is like saying a veyron is just a little bit quicker than a diesel beetle.

Yeah it's fugly, probably rides like the pony express stage coach, and rolls on some massive industrial tires you won't likely find at pepboys. But when it comes to the trails, lock the diffs on all three axles along with the center diff and transfer.case, and that rolling apartment will go places you can't even imagine.

The F550 I'm sure is adequate for most trails and is much easier to live with on the highway and life on general. But the uni is a whole different league when you leave the pavement.

8x8 Unicat on the desert.

Cost is north of $700,000

But you could basically go most anywhere, Ill just stick to pulling my Airstream.

my buddy has an earth roamer in tampa and swears by it!

he takes it all over the US

That's the dream! It would be so fun to go anywhere you could imagine.

Is he a younger guy,or an older guy? Does he go solo or does he have a wife or friends he takes along?

If you're wife is down to travel in any of those rigs she gets my seal of approval! They couldn't get any more manly if the driver seat had a custom molded cradle for your balls.

That is badass! I wonder if they would do other vehicles than the Ford F450 Super Duty. I have a 2012 and just had to warranty the turbo on it and lucky I got home with just 21k on it!

I was wondering the same thing, go big! Like C5500 Kodiak 4x4 or wiggs Sportchassis.

I'm sure they would.. If you look at the options list the truck based on dealer price is $55-60k depending on which model you buy through them, if its a two door or an extended cab 4 door. So if these conversions are between $260k & 500k for a top of the line one, you're still spending hundreds of thousands either way you cut it.

If you're spending that kind of money, I'd just trade it in against a new F550 and use the platform they are use to building.

But who knows, there's probably not much difference between the two trucks chassis?

Here's a PDF of the options list:

Holy cow the XV makes the other look small…that is not an easy task. I would take either!

  • 3 weeks later...

Just curious, but what makes the Unimog so much more capable than a pickup truck off-road? I mean I am sure stock, but what if the pickup has locking differentials, suspension lift, bigger wheels and tires, etc...?

They also have expedition yachts you can buy as well; basically these are yachts built to go into much rougher areas and go much longer ranges than standard yachts.

I saw a good friend's Quigley Ford Econoline 350 van.

Very, very impressive. It's an off road capable Econoline, with lots of accessories inside to do anything you could imagine doing on a camping trip (cooking, refrigerator, air pump for tires, even a cold shower).

He even added a 25 gallon fresh water tank. Lots of compartments everywhere too.

If that's not enough, it has an extended camper roof like those old VW vans, and he can stand upright in it at 6'3. Dual bunk beds to provide sleeping accommodations for he and his wife plus two young kids.

All of this in something the size of a typical van you see everyday. Heavy duty Trans, low range 4wd, and serious tires for legit off roading.

Can't imagine the mods would total over $30-40k over stock van. A great value for camping, and it's perhaps one of the rare vans that looks sweet.

Those things are really bad ass. And I can appreciate their value.

But I think I would rather do something like this (and toterhomes can be bought for far cheaper than this one). Get a stacker trailer and pull the Jeep for the more off road adventures. More money that route but you still have the choice of being an adventurer and having almost every comfort of home.
