Range Rover Velar

I'm a serial RR guy, been through 6 so far. For all their faults I love them. We've had 3 sports in a row and I was going to get my wife the Velar for something different. Any experience with these? I had a quick look and looked like the Ian Shrager version of the sport. Slicker but somehow a little cheap looking. Looks good on the road though, saw a dark grey one and it wasn't bad.

Not driven one but have been in one for an hour.

Nice interior (shows good things to come from LR) but the touchscreen begs you to touch it and looks really dirty quickly and in addition to that my friend who the car for awhile said that it is distracting. You have to look at what you swipe scroll and that takes your eye off the road.

But at least it is nice to look at when it will break down.

I couldn't tell when I looked at it but is it roomier than the sport? Shorter wheel base, we don't want LESS room than what we have.

The local dealer gave me one to try for a day last week.

This is likely the best looking model out of the current Land Rover line-up. They finally got the proportions right. Its exterior trimming looks good but feels a bit cheap to touch. To be fair though, it's not any worse than any of the other upscale SUV's from Germany or Italy though. Interior looks very nice but the dark glass and gloss black surfaces are begging for finger smudges. And like Captain has said, you have to look down to operate the touch screen properly. This is suppose to be a brand new system for both the Land/Range Rover and Jaguar and is supposedly quite a bit better than the current system. Let's hope that is true but I am not hold my breath. Coach work is always great and expected from Range Rover. The materials on the upper dash feels a bit cheap especially the instrument pod which is compose of hard plastic. I think they are holding off for the "extended leather package" for subsequent model years. The interior works well as a whole but it just seems half a step or one step lower from the "true" Range Rovers as far as materials used are concerned.

The Velar shares the same chassis and many other components both inside and out with the Jaguar F-Pace. I am glad that LR had tinkered with the Velar enough that it doesn't feel similar to the F-Pace. Its air suspension and better coach work likely play a role. The F-Pace feels more sporty though as I believe that is the intend while the Velar feels more refined and more as a cruiser. I am not too thrilled on the Velar being AWD (grafted from the F-Pace) as oppose to being a permanent 4WD like all Range Rovers should be. But judging from driving the F-Pace throughout last year's harsh winter, the AWD did perform very well on snow and ice. Make no mistake though, a closer look at the underside of the car would reveal that the Velar is engineered for full-time on-road and the incidental soft off-road purposes. It does not have the proper seals and protective materials for serious off-road capabilities like the Sport or the full-size Range Rover (why one would drive a $150k+ gargantuan luxury SUV for serious off-road use is another matter ). This is primarily a luxury on-road truck that looks very good and drives quite well given its price segment. It does not and will not have more room as the Sport because it's a smaller vehicle: think F-Pace, X3, Tiguan and Macan. 4 is comfortable but 5 is pushing it. Truck space is good for its size (a lot better than the Macan's). The Velar seems to have won the world over judging from the orders for that car; which somewhat begs the question: it's so good looking that many are buying it; so would there be too many of them on the road and thus watering down its exclusivity?

Perfect, thank you. I'll borrow one and see what its like. I'm sure I'll like it though. Poor thing will get a beating, every RR we have returned at the end of the lease looks like a stunt car from Mad Max. This one will get the same treatment so I'm not worried about grubby fingers prints and the nav isn't a concern since our phones do all of that. I like the looks and the price is pretty good.

I hear you but with one kid and all city driving (contact sport) we want to be a little smaller.

g- seems like it being smaller than the sport would be a negative as it's going to be a family truckster.

Hey, it can't be worse than your DD. It's a looker and what you are actually going to use it for, all that extra 4x4 stuff on regular RR's isn't necessary.

My only concern is how small it is with the little ones in the back. Wondering when these updates will make their way to the full size? Definitely looks gorgeous.

Lol. I was JUST about to mention that I saw you and your lwb Range this weekend.

Considering that you’ll have two car seats soon that big range is perfect for your family. That and at your height you need a long car.

It’s comical that we’re having this conversation here and we have a texting vehicle conversation running as well. 😂

Size-wise, the Velar is slotted in between the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Land Rover Discover. Hope this will provide some kind of reference.

The new touch screen with the newest tech is suppose to make its way to the rest of the Range Rover models in mid-2018 as a MY2019. Personally, I am a bit skeptical on British cars with the latest hi-tech electronics. E.g. they still haven't fully debugged and perfected the touch screen firmware on the Jaguar F-Pace and XE yet; the 3rd major firmware update is just around the corner. I would wait a bit first for the tech transition onto the existing models.

Haha yeah dude that thing is literally the perfect baby mobile - number 2 is going to fit perfectly and I can still have my seat all the way back. :)

Agreed, the new tech in them really is a gamble. I wonder if a lot of folks end up leasing them vs buying for that reason?

That's been my thinking for every range rover I've had and also I'd never want to be out of warranty on one.

As someone that works with software the way they deploy and run the software on pretty much most cars these days is immensely frustrating.

Because each car you need to change so much it is like they need to re-design the interface and they never evolve the os. It is thrown together and under resourced and under tested.

Whilst IOS11 is no oil painting I do not get why car manufacturers feel the need to ignore apple car play and Android car and then fumble a piece of software together.

My thoughts exactly. Could there be an issue such as a license to use car play that these manufacturers want to avoid?
