The dreaded phone call from Lambo

So, I took delivery of my 2018 HP a couple of weeks ago (Balloon White). It has rained nonstop for 2 weeks so I’ve only driven it 2 times. One of those times was home from the dealer and then once to the body shop to have XPEL stealth wrap and ceramic coat. Well, I just got a call from Lambo explaining that my car was hand painted from the factory and that while they were wrapping it at XPEL they had to remove the film because they found spots that looked like dirt or debris that was under the wrap. During the removal process apparently the paint started lifting. Lambo stated this was common(because of the hand painting) and have agreed to remedy the situation. I’m obviously grateful for this but it pisses me off to no end that I’m now going to be without my car for weeks to a month when I’ve got track days and events scheduled in the coming weeks. Have any of you guys experienced anything like this with your new Lambo’s?

I wonder if your car was damaged during transport and repainted by your dealer. Who claimed to fix the issue? Dealer or Lambo HQ?

Lamborghini does not paint the Huracans by hand unless they are special colors, I’d check if balloon white falls within that category, when they paint them by hand the QC they are going through it will make it impossible for such thing to happen. I’ve seen evidence of this 1st hand I doubt such obvious things would go past those inspections.

I am very sorry to hear this happened to you but there is more to this story IMO.

What difference would it make if it was hand sprayed vs being robotic? It's still getting baked and cured, so the end result should be equal from a durability and adhesion perspective.

I REALLY hope they (dealer, transport company, etc) wouldn't have done a shoddy repair and covered it up prior to delivery.

There are far more qualified people here that can speak to how Huaracans are painted, but here is a documentary on the Aventador. At 25 minutes in, the video covers the body prep, prime, paint, and qc process. No way the issues you described got past the inspectors.

When I took delivery of my SV, every panel pieces had some type of sanding lines everywhere, so contacted the dealer and my sales guy he said never heard of that. These marks are hard to capture on film so I was like whatever. I pay my detail guy 5 days to do paint correction and it came out like glass after. To say that things doesn't get pass quality control is far fetched.

Hence my recommendation to measure paint thickness.

A friend purchased a brand new vehicle (not a lambo) and was found to have had an accident at factory that was not disclosed. Manufacturer and dealer went out of their way to give a brand new vehicle with every single bell and whistle. It was paint thickness measurements that showed the entire front of vehicle was resprayed ....

There is a distinct difference between Huracan and Aventador. Aventador is done totally in house, where Huracan is done off site, and shipped in already painted. Unless they have changed that process, which I doubt they have. Aventador is done totally by hand, and all done in house in SA.

Not sure what the State laws are in the US but dealers in Canada don't have to declare transport damage up to a certain percentage. In BC dealers don't have to declare any damage under 20% of the asking price. So basically a $400k car could have $80,000 worth of damage and the dealer doesn't have to disclose it. It's BS.

That's ridiculous.

It appears to be 3% for the State of Virginia:

I also had to get my detailer to spend a week correcting the paint. Pretty ordinary for an expensive car :eusa_naughty:

Ferrari is notorious for really bad paint from the factory. Don't know if quality has improved but it was pretty back when the 458 came out.

My dealer called saying something to the effect of “Lamborghini is going to fix this. This happens quite often with these cars because they’re hand painted.”

Exact same thing happened to my friends M3. It was sold to him with 6 miles on the odometer but the driver’s side door and front quarter panel had been resprayed after a transport guy wrapped it around a pole. He noticed it had been resprayed well over a year after purchasing. When he approached the dealership they replaced it with a brand new car two years newer.

Which dealer are you working with?

Lamborghini Houston. They said they’d find a reputable body shop in Austin where it’s currently located. If not, they’d transport it back to Houston and have their people respray it.

Sorry to hear. But a brand new HP now needing a respray because the paint lifted :eusa_wall:

I would try and demand for a new replacement.

You should ask your dealer to show proof they e-mailed HQ and they're admitting to paint quality issues at the factory. If you're not getting answers from your dealer just e-mail Lambo NA and ask them to further investigate the matter and ask to be included on all the e-mails.

Not saying your dealer isn't telling the truth but it's best to get some proof and if it is a factory issue other owners should made aware before getting their cars wrapped. It's a pretty serious QC issue.

A close UR friend of mine had a 13 SL. It was the Matte black.

He had it wrapped in stealth film like you. And similar story, that when removing to re-do a part with debris under the film, the paint lifted.

I know that the matte colors take special care, but not sure if that is a common place or not to have the paint simply pull away.

I am sorry to hear of your dilemma. I would speak directly with a Lamborghini rep also. Not just the dealer. Get started with the dealers area rep.

Good luck.

Mike

Very sorry to hear of your experience. Hope it’s quickly resolved to your complete satisfaction.

Waiting sucks but in the long term of ownership it’s much more important that the car is made right, or replaced.

Something doesn't smell right.

I would also suggest you reach out to Lambo themselves and verify this is true. There is definitely a possibility that this car was repaired or painted after it left the factory. I've seen it before, even with million dollar hypercars, without the client even having the slightest clue of what actually went on.
