How does it compare with the Tesla?

There's a few places Tesla is ahead:

    • Mobile app
    • Phone as key
    • Infotainment
    • Price/performance
    • Autopilot
    • Integrated dashcam

But Porsche does a lot of things better than Tesla:

    • Interior fit and finish
    • Drivetrain/suspension
    • Wind/road noise
    • Consistency - The Taycan is designed to behave the same (in terms of throttle response, regen, braking) cold and hot, low charge and full charge.
    • Virtually no performance degradation when doing several launches/pushing the car
    • High speed acceleration (i.e. flooring it from 70-80 mph)
    • While the infotainment is better in the Tesla, Porsche does give you more performance info like G meter, front/rear drive distribution, battery temp and suspension info etc. A lot of this is available in the Tesla with third party tools though
    • Seats with ventilation
    • Hifi (Burmester)
    • Looks and sound, but this is obviously subjective

That's awesome! Do you have a back-up generator on the home? That's next to nothing for getting your cars around!

The power is so stable here there's no need really.

PS, I'm stuck on the wrong theme here on the forum, can't change it. Could you reset my theme choice? :)

  3. So I finally got the car back from getting wrapped, and have been out on a few drives. It's a Turbo S with basically all options ticked, one of the first delivered here!

First impression, the car is scary fast! Might seem obvious if you know the numbers (0-60mph in 2.6, 2.4 with rollout), but the way the power is delivered instantaneously feels unreal.

The handling for such a heavy car is also top notch, Porsche has done a very good job hiding the weight with tech.

I'll write some more when I get a few more miles on it :)

Here are some pics of the car and one of my electric collection.taycan1.jpg

This may be a stupid question, why do all this custom development? There are 1,000's of forums, I'm sure there are some bulletproof up to date off the shelf solutions. This seems to a slow, expensive and potentially unreliable solution.

I can't speak for what the Lambopower guys have done, but this (IPS Community Suite) is an off the shelf solution. The tricky part is migrating the old forum to a new version, especially when it's probably over a decade old.

Hardly where we want it to be, but we wanted something up for the interim. It’s not bad as you get the exposure. Especially if you haven’t changed themes or views in years. That is an adjustment!

I don't know if you're going to make a theme of your own from scratch or base it on a pre-made one, but I would recommend checking out TAMAN's themes. They're really well made and customizable, and the creator is very supportive.

  6. Why do they rate the "available energy" as a certain amount of kilometers if the energy consumption increases and thus decreases the range? Or did you mean kilowatt-hours instead of km...?

Tesla uses a static value to convert kw/h to range so it's a direct indicator of how much energy is available. It's actually a lot more convenient than cars that constantly change the estimated range based on the current consumption. You can see estimated range based on the last 10/25/50 km in the Tesla as well, but this is not the range indicated in the dashboard.

  7. Don't count on Audi service either. They're awful too.

I think Audi around here is good, Porsche too.

And they're both about 5 minutes away from me, Tesla is an hour away.

The guys working at Tesla around here do a decent job, but they are severely stifled by the organization. Common parts like door handles takes 3-4 months to get, they are overloaded with a huge backlog due to capacity issues, and in all this a lot of customers are receiving little to no feedback on their issue.

I always get a loaner when needed, and they fix critical issues on drop ins though. Still I've heard of people driving 4-5 hours to a service appointment only to get there and hear they don't actually have time to even start working on the car.

  8. I have zero personal experience with EV's beyond having driven a couple of Model S's that belonged to friends, but this is wildly inconsistent with everything I have ever read in the automotive press. To use just one example, the latest Car & Driver states in responding to a subscriber letter that their real world testing of EV's has shown a range difference between cold and warm weather of "greater than 25%." Now maybe there is a distinction between range and "energy" here (although not one that could account for that much difference), but I think what owners care about is range. If an EV's range is 250 miles in warm weather but only 185-190 in cold weather that is a big deal IMO. Also, my friends with the model S's like them, but they will gladly admit that there is a significant difference in range in cold v. warm weather, and that their real world range (not driving aggressively but not driving like a granny either) is a good 10-15% below Tesla's "rated" range, even in warm weather when brand new.

Cake was commenting battery life, probably indicating the battery degrades faster? Range is a completely different thing, and is obviously shorter in cold climates.

The available energy goes down a little, on my car it's around 395 km in the summer and 385 in the winter at 90% charge. Basically nothing.

The energy consumption goes up a lot, 10-15% shorter range is about right. On a car with a range like the Tesla this isn't a big deal imo. On a car with a smaller battery you can lose up to 40-50% however because they use about the same amount of energy for heat etc, and this is a huge part of their energy available.

But in the long run cold weather has a positive effect on battery lifespan.

  9. You are a Tesla owner right? and by your own admission you will end up with Audi and/or Porsche, after seeing the cars I completely agree with your views, the only difference is that Tesla helped me make up my mind before I bought from them.
Yes, I'm on my second Model S :) The main reason I think I'll end up with the Audi instead of a Model 3 or S is that Tesla's service capacity here is already maxed out. If I book service now I will probably get it January... A lot of people have their cars at Tesla for months waiting to be fixed. Luckily I have never had any major issues the five years and over 150,000 km driven, but if something should happen I'm afraid to think about the waiting time. And this is with only Model S and X in the market, when Model 3 is released I wouldn't be surprised if you have to wait 6 to 10 months for a service appointment.

The Porsche I'm getting either way!

  10. I assume cold weather is not a factor for the OP. I’ve heard different stories on how cold affects battery life (some say it’s not significant - some say it’s a deal breaker).

For those with winter and longer drives I would think “range anxiety” would be quite real.

"Stories" like this is what ruins the facts. Cold weather is a lot better for batteries than hot weather. You lose a small insignificant amount of energy in cold weather (1-2%), but the batteries lasts a lot longer.

Tesla the simply useless car company, they think they are Apple LOL

I don't see Tesla as the new Apple, the tech existed around forever there is nothing innovative about it, the packaging is sleeker than the average but that's about it for me, they act like Apple which is the problem because if you are cocky you also have to be able to back it up otherwise you just look like a fool.

When the big boys will jump in Tesla will have to pick up their game., the key for growth for every company isn't so much to please those already converted and loyal, it's to retain them but also to bring new blood in such as myself for example, without doing so there is no growth but I am sure they couldn't care less about that because at this stage they can not even deliver to those who bought from them so why bother with the new guys?

What tech did Tesla invent ?

Once again what tech did Tesla invent? We’ve been charging batteries forever.

Since we are comparing them with Apple the first trillion dollar company, the company who revolutionized the personal computing industry and change our lives with mobile computing forever, that’s why I am asking, what revolutionary tech have they invented because I genuinely do not know.

Go back and do more reading. Apple is no different LOL.

Fortis, you seem to compare Tesla to Apple a lot. A LOT. "They think they're the new Apple"? No, they don't think that. People compare them to Apple, that's a completely different thing.

What did they invent? If you want to look at their patents, look here. Is a patent an invention? Not necessarily, but aside from that they made the first car that's updated continuously through the cloud, the first car with a usable "autopilot", the first electric car that have a usable range for most people, the first car with an integrated web browser, the first supercharger network that covers all of USA and western Europe, the first mass produced electric car that puts just about any other car in the dust from 0-60mph, and a lot of other "firsts" that aren't necessarily inventions but that actually works.

The tech existed? It can be replicated by anyone? Well... what did Apple invent? What tech? Was it so revolutionary noone could replicate it? No, they mostly buy tech from other companies and put it in a nice package. Do you think Apple invented the smartphone? Tablets? Rounded icons? No, they were all around long before Apple made it work with other companies tech.

The tech for making electric cars have existed for over 100 years, but noone have done it properly until Tesla did it.

I will wait for Audi, Porsche and Benz to bring their full electric cars to the market, when that happens and I get proper factory back up with dealerships around the corner from my house governed by a properly run enterprise then if I like what I see I will buy, for now I am happy with my DD choices.
This was actually Elon Musks goal for Tesla, proving that electric cars are viable so other manufacturers would step up. They made all their patents available to everyone a few years ago.

Tesla do have issues, especially in their quality consistency and (at least where I am) service center capacity.

I'm on the list for both the Model 3, Audi eTron and Porsche Taycan, and will most likely end up with the Audi and the Porsche. But if it weren't for Tesla they (Porsche and Audi) wouldn't be making high end electric cars now, that's for sure.

  11. Because the bandwidth costs money for the ISPs, and thus treating everyone equally may require treating everyone unequally in some other form. As for Chinese Internet, that is authoritarian government control over the Internet. The Internet to me is like as your personal statement says :)

Exactly, that's why a 60 mbit connection is more expensive than a 20 mbit connection.

And yes, the internet is working fine now and has been for decades. No need to change anything to give the ISP's the power to act like an authoritarian government.

  12. How does repealing Net Neutrality create the problem when Net Neutrality wasn't even enforced until 2015 and the Internet was for the most part fine before then?

It was enforced before 2015, that's why FCC lost their case then. They wouldn't draft new rules if they were already able to enforce them...

Comcast was ruled to be illegally blocking or throttling BitTorrent traffic in 2008.

Let me ask you this, how do you think repealing net neutrality will benefit the customers?

  13. It was a solution to an as-yet non-existent problem, i.e. that the ISPs would start controlling information and access.

What are you talking about? Repealing net neutrality creates this problem. It's not a problem now, and never will be with net neutrality in place.

This is 100% an act for big companies to make more money. And the looser is the consumer. There are absolutely NO benefits for users. And with the US being so dominant in hosting services, this may affect the whole world.

Congress can still stop this I believe, let's hope they do.

  14. Can someone explain this to me? The internet has been around for 25 years or so for the normal person. And we never had Net Neutrality until within the last two or three years(whatever its been). Why is it needed now? Why is the internet going to be destroyed as we know it without Net Neutrality?

We have ALWAYS had net neutrality, the Obama administration just made sure it stayed that way. It did so by not allowing ISP to differentiate traffic based on content.

But with net neutrality out the window, US ISP's are now free to limit bandwidth, charge extra or even block access to whatever they feel like. An ISP can charge extra or block Netflix access, to advocate their own streaming service. They can charge you extra for using email services. Block sites they for whatever reason do not like.

So yeah, a great day for the consumers.
