  1. WOW!  Congrats DoctaM3!  Gorgeous car and fun video.

Brought back memories of meeting Valentino at the Italian Cars event at Pocono I think in 2012?

I took HIM for a ride on track in my car.  When we came back to the pits, as he got out of the car, he said, “Next time, I drive”! (There was never a next time however).  He was a charming and patient man and a pleasure to be with.  He was generous with his time, and never too busy to sign an autograph or take a photo or chat with someone.  A true gentleman and ambassador for the brand!

I hope to see your car in person one of these days.

  2. Thanks Destructor for the kind words!

The one exception I didn’t consider would be Euro delivery.  In that case, it could make sense to have factory film installed so you can enjoy the Euro experience without concern.  It might be considered disposable, and if not up to par - have it removed and redone once delivered stateside.  Obviously an expensive consideration, but when protecting cars in this “ball park” - it could be the difference between enjoying a much lower stress delivery in Europe versus worrying about chips and dealing with the aftermath of road rash on an unprotected car.

I’m also a fan of Xpel.

  3. I would stay away from factory applied clearbra regardless of the manufacturer.  It is SO dependent on installer skill that I prefer to vet my installer by checking references to determine if they are skilled, and if they stand behind their work.

Even if the factory did a great job (it’s possible, but how do you know who is doing it?) - things happen afterward.  Edges may lift, there could be slight defects.  Who will address issues after delivery?  The dealer?  And if so, who does the dealer’s work?

Other questions:  what method of installation is employed?  Are they cutting film on the car?  Is it fully custom or is it a pre-cut template? (Not necessarily bad - but good to know).  Are all edges wrapped when possible?  Are they covering the headlights and is it recommended?

I could go on but you get the point.  I’d rather choose my installer and know that if I need an issue addressed, I’ve got someone willing to stand behind their work.  I’ve heard too many horror stories to allow PPF applied without knowing (and choosing) who does it.  I assume the manufacturers probably sub-contract.  My Porsche dealer subcontracts, and in their case - I am still choosing the installer but sometimes he does the work at the dealer.  We’ve also gone to his shop (120 miles) and he’s also applied film in our garage (most recently the Clearplex on the GT4 windshield)

Best of luck with your project!

Way to close it down! Car looks good.

Thanks D!  It was a FUN weekend!  I enjoyed the car and camaraderie with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Love the color choice cake.  Car looks stunning!

Thank you!  Here are a few shots from this past weekend at Pitt Race.  I didn’t drive as I was far too busy with administrative duties, but I enjoyed the commute each day.  I was arriving each morning at 0530, and typically departing between 7 & 8 pm.  Super-long days but we had a great event with exceptional weather and everyone had a great time.  Zero reportable events.  Only a few mechanical issues which were cleared very quickly from the track.

  5. Thanks D!  Just returned from 3 days at the Glen. It was soggy and foggy but we had a little dry track each day. I drove enough to realize this car is on another level from the last gen (which I dearly loved).

The PDK is brilliant and a game changer. And the PCCB are unbelievable. They remind me of the CCB we had on the LP 560!  I kept braking later and later going into the Bus Stop, and there was still more to give.  The shifts at 7800 RPM at WOT are lightning quick.

Learned it’s lower than the last one  But so far no scraping

2100 miles in the first 31 days. I’m enjoying it!!

  6. I was gone for several months - intentionally shut down the little social media in which I participated.   Now I”m back and sad to see so little going on.  But also nice to see some familiar long-standing folks chime in.

As my automotive interest has shifted to Porsche (primarily), I’m very active on a P-focused forum that has a lot of activity.  It’s been a great resource for info, especially technical.  I contribute where I’m able, and soak up a lot which can be very informative.  It reminds me of this place back when I first joined when shopping for the LP560.

I still came back here for years (even after the Lambo was sold) just for entertainment, lifestyle info and enjoying the Lambo stuff through others.   But everything changes…

Agree that Fortis’ house build was epic.  And RHYNO - congrats on the incoming Urus.  I saw my first in person a few months ago.  It was yellow and enormous (I think I may have posted a few photos here as my 993 was parked next to it.  Talk about contrast!

  7. My P1 Designs LWB seat inserts arrived today!  They have several nice fabric choices, but I wanted something truly factory, subtle and unique.  My Porsche dealer service manager suggested this fabric (called Porsche Script) which was available on 911 and 944 in the ‘80s.  He sourced it from Germany and shipped it to P1 Designs in TX.  They crafted it into the seat insert.  I also opted for a layer of memory foam which is reputed to increase comfort (this was mostly for hubby’s bad back).  They make the entire insert (core plus fabric cover) and provide nice storage bags for keeping the factory inserts in storage.  I’ll report back after I get some miles.

I’ll turn 1000 miles tomorrow and am heading to the Glen soon for THIS GT4’s inaugural track event.  Looking forward to experiencing more comfort on my 600+ mile journey in higher style.

  8. Congrats Tara and enjoy for many miles in the best of health!  Those are great cars - go-kart style!

Your plans sound logical, and it makes perfect sense to replace/upgrade whatever is upstream/downstream from mods.  In the past we learned the hard way that a modification almost always has unintended consequences and it has made me far more particular in what gets done to make sure everything works together and is engineered properly.

I’m a bit late to the party - hope you’ve got some progress reports coming soon.

  9. Sold the 981 GT4 to a friend.  The ordering process for the 718 started in Sept 2020.  Obviously nothing like DoctaM3’s THIRTY MONTHS!! But still a long nine months to wait for a car.  I was notified my paint-to-sample (PTS) request was approved in Oct, and was given a February ‘21 build slot.  I had to submit my specs immediately and it locked quickly, but I knew what I wanted.

This is my first PTS and it wasn’t really a tough choice.  There were some tempting colors, like Signal Yellow which is a mango color, or Maritime Blue which is a purple-bluish color, but I have always had a “thing” for battleship grey sports cars.  Grigio Telesto is one of my fave Lambo colors, and for the GT4 I chose Slate Gray.

I learned (once making my choice) that there are in fact THREE colors called Slate Grey.  One is metallic and reserved for 911.  The other two have the same name with different paint codes and hues.  I chose Slate Grey Y97 which is the lighter of the two.  The other is also non-metallic and more of a charcoal.

I have loved Slate Grey since seeing it on a 356 many years ago.  It does have some Porsche history, and it checks the boxes for me.  I think it’ll “wear well”, and I won’t tire of it assuming it stays in the garage for what I hope is a long time.

I chose PDK instead of manual.  That was a BIG decision and so far (in my first 500 miles) I am very pleased with the choice.  It’s my first PDK track car since 2012.  I enjoy manual and automatic, and this PDK is brilliant and very much like an extremely fast manual without losing power while shifting.  It’s lightning quick, very smooth and fun.  It will be a very different experience on track and on the street it’s very relaxing.  Yet it can still be engaging when I want to shift “manually”.

I head to Watkins Glen in two weeks so I”ve got some break-in miles to pile on, but it’ll be ready.  I have some after market seat inserts on order which I’ll post once received.  They are subtle but will make it unique.  And they offer a memory foam option which my husband will appreciate as it dramatically increases comfort, and ease of ingress/egress as it raises you every so slightly inside the bolsters.

I haven’t decided on whether to do a half cage.  I’m not doing nearly as much track as in past years, and I may use the Simpson hybrid device with my regular three point seat belts.  If I decide to do more than 3 events per season I may go for the cage.  I’ve got time to decide.

It’s wearing Michelin Sport Cup2 and I was very happy to see these on the car.  I was disappointed with the Dunlop SportMax that came on both our previous 981 GT4.  We burned through them quickly and replaced with Michelins.

a stop on the drive home from PPF installer in Cleveland - Love the paint in bright sunlight:

  10. Docta - thanks so much for the info, and I’m not sure why the DM didn’t work.  I’ll check into it.  I retreated into a maxed out privacy mode for several months and maybe I changed my settings.

I’ll need some window tint and might give them a try.  And now I see the typo in my post: Congrats DOCTA!  Looking forward to seeing it at CnC or another  local event!

Congratulations, i love stories like these! It went from a great home to an amazing home and will definitely be loved (and driven)!

Thanks!  Appreciate the kind words, and you are correct!  It will be loved AND driven!  Hoping the tires are in this week (current tires are 2012/2013).  Doing lots of reading about the 993 and things we might consider for the “big” service.

Congrats Cake! That was pretty much my dream car back in my high school days. Enjoy!

Thanks Jason!  Hope all is well with your girls and everyone is healthy and finding things to celebrate during these crazy times.

We’ve had the car since Monday and so far put on a little over 200 miles.  Today the ODO eclipsed 30,000!

We are both thoroughly enjoying it, and my husband went from saying this car was ALL about me and he had zero interest, to now fully embracing and enjoying it! (Which makes it even better for me).  It is very different from anything we’ve owned, and it’s very comfortable and highly engaging, especially at typical street speeds.  I’m still getting used to the weight distribution and how it handles.

It will get new tires in the next week or so, and I’m compiling a list of service items to be addressed when it goes in the for the 30k maintenance.  Overall it’s an excellent example and rock solid at all speeds, and we couldn’t be happier.  I also think it’s a beautiful car and am enjoying having it in the garage (automotive “art”).

Before owning it I could not have said for sure that I was going to enjoy it this much, but I had to find out, and it was too good an opportunity to pass up.  I’m very glad I took the leap of faith because it’s better than expected.

    Congrats!

Looks great!  IMO, the 993 is the best looking 911 ever and how it was meant to be.

Thanks VCR!  It's our second 911 and I think it could be with us for awhile.  It's much more comfortable than the 991RS, especially for hubby's bad back.  But even so we put 6000 miles on that one in 18 months before selling.
