Changing Power Steering Fluid In Diablo VT

Dear Lamborghinisti,

 

 

Since I'm doing my headers / exhaust, I'm doing a bunch of " while I'm in there "

 

I thought I would post a seperate thread on changing your power steering fluid. According to the Owners handbook, it should be done once a year.

This is where to drain the fluid...at this fitting

Undo the fitting with 24mm ring spanner. Prep with a long funnel and drain pan underneath. I held the funnel in place with a wire cable. You will need to let it drain for awhile.

You will need new copper crush washers

 

Part # 8401819 X 2

Any Dextron II compliant automatic transmission fluid will do. Yes, I did say AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID for the steering.

 

I couldn't bare to buy such cheap fluid so I went for the Mobil 1 synthetic fluid. At $7.98 per quart ( 2 needed ) that's more what one is used to when buying anything for a Lambo

On the passenger side or cyl 1-6, you will find the power steering fluid reservoir under the carbon fiber panels.

Just twist off the top and the " max 23 degrees C and max 20 degrees C marks will be exposed.

 

 

Just fill to the max line. I went to the max 23 C

 

 

No...no, we're NOT done yet!

 

After filling, we need to bleed air out of the system.

 

Put the key in POS II ( NO start ). This will free up the steering lock. We now have to turn the steering wheel 20 times, lock to lock to pump fluid through the steering rack. ( This assumes you are doing this proceedure with the front end lifted or the car completely lifted on stands.

 

I did the 20 turns lock to lock. I then topped up the fluid in the reservoir. I proceeded to start the engine and did the 20 turns lock to lock again ( to be safe ) and again topped up the fluid.

 

Cap on reservoir and we are DONE ! ....till next year

 

 

Of course a great thanks goes out to....guess who?.....Mike Dillon of course from Evans Automotive. He took took the time to go over the whole proceedure with me....especially the 20 turns lock to lock to bleed the air from the system.

Power steering? We don't need no stinkin' power steering.

About to do this to my 6.0 - where do I get the copper washers? Are they a standard size or specialist for the car? I'm in Australia, so access to parts in USA not so easy.

If someone has the I.D., O.D., and thickness, we can go from there pretty inexpensively.
