How far would you push the issue?

So 2 weekends ago I was in Vegas for my buddy's bachelor party. It was somewhat mellow since it is his 3rd time 'round.

Anyway we are at a German bar / restaurant called Hofbrauhaus. They put on a live show with a band. A younger crowd but still a good time. At the beginning of the show the band opened with the National Anthem. I glance over a couple of tables and I see this guy about 25 with a couple of girls. I notice that he is not standing nor did he bother to take his hat off. At first I thought he might be a foreigner and not recognize the custom, but then I see he singing some of the lyrics. I shouted over to him "Hey! Stand up!" No response.

My blood begins to boil, but my focus is on the bachelor having a good time. About 15 min later I catch this assclown coming back in from having a smoke. I accost him in the lobby. I started with "Hey boy!". "Who the fcuk are you not standing for the National Anthem?" After about 10 seconds a small crowd starts to gather. Who/why was this 240lb guy yelling at this 150lb kid. When some of the bystanders realize why I was upset, they chose not to intervene. I stopped just short of doing the old "pointing the finger in the chest" routine, but I made it very clear the importance of respect. And let it go with that.

What would all of you had done? Did I take it too far? I think not, but I had a couple of drinks in me.

I would have ignored the entire incident.

Pointing your finger at his chest, yelling at him would have accomplished what? So you could be arrested for assault? Wreck your night over his disrespect?

Too me, he would have not been worth the trouble.

Probably would have done the same thing as you(minus the finger pointig. Your just trying to start something at that point). Doesn't matter what anthem is being played. You stand and show respect. And take off your effin hat for sure.

If you are / were a serviceman that has been deployed then I think you are entitled to what you did. If you just wanted to demonstrate how awesome of a patriot you are I think you went a bit far. I have seen plenty of people ignore the national anthem and it bugs the hell out of me. I will give them a tap on the shoulder or a gentle nudge and ask them to take their hat off, stop talking, etc, but I won't go any further than that.

America is suppose to be a free country, no one should be forced to conform... He has the freedom to sit, and you have the freedom to stand. As long as he's not hurting anyone ignore him and go about your business.

are you serious??

I would just watch myself someday you end up doing that to the wrong guy and you might loose a finger or two, his lack of respect does not give you the right to harass him, if it was like that I could kick some serious ass on daily basis, I bet you wouldn't have done that had you not been drinking.

Eh.... I see your point...but considering how these non-military young guys are, at last he knew the words to the Anthem. I grew-up a "Navy-Brat", and I love my country and all but.... that's a little "much" dude.

Blame it on the a.a.a.a.a.aalcohol..

Holy over reaction batman.

The right thing to have done is mind your own business.

Please point me to where it says 'everyone must stand and recite the NA' whenever it is played.. ?

Section 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This is a U.S. federal law.

Conduct During Playing: During a rendition of the national anthem:

When the flag is displayed:

All present except those in uniform should stand at attention.

Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder,

Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present and not in uniform may render the military salute.

Individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and

When the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Thanks. Your advice is well taken. Next time I will ignore the idiots.

I must clairify. I stopped short of any physical contact. (I did NOT start poking him in chest, although I wanted to).

Even if it had been a man much larger than me, I still would have responded the same.

At the end of it all, I said to him "Its your God given right to not stand, but it doesn't make it the right thing to do."

Totally unenforceable law.... The government hasn't tried to enforce any of the flag codes since Texas v. Johnson.

Its his first amendment right to sit, stand, put his hand on his heart or flip the bird. I think hes a jackass, but I would have stepped in on HIS behalf if I saw you bullying him.

Why was a band in a German bar playing the US National Anthem?

"Allegedly, a Pan Am 727 flight waiting for start clearance in Munich overheard the following:

Lufthansa (in German): "Ground, what is our start clearance time?"

Ground (in English): "If you want an answer you must speak in English."

Lufthansa (in English): "I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?"

Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): "Because you lost the bloody war.""

Wow, I didn't know this was codified. Regardless, the verbiage is "should" and "may", not "shall" and "must". I would probably just ignore him. Freedom of expression includes freedom to ignore the pledge and/or anthem, or burn the flag.

I just want to clarify so I have this right.

Out of all of the things in the world that are completely wrong, famine, slave labour, child prostitution... this boils your blood?

Just so I know.

I encounter idiots every day. If I let every one of them bother me that much I would be a 25 year old on high blood pressure medication. I wouldnt have got that into it but I wouldnt scorn you for yelling at him as you did.

Of course there are much bigger and more important issues in this world than what happened.

But unlike the things you listed, this incident unfolded right in front of me.
