Kerplop Report post Posted November 17, 2010 My dilemma is that I have grown QUITE attached to my 914 and the fact that they are appreciating in value. It's not often you find a 914 survivor and one that is original. I know that if I give this car up that the likely hood of me finding another like it will be nil. The car has it's own story and has been a ton of fun. However. I have the chance to trade for a 911 SC. There are 4 of them for sale locally and I found an owner that may be willing to trade straight over title for title. I have scoped the car out and it is quite nice. He is looking for something different. I just happen to want a 911. I have, for a long time. Sort of unsure. I really don't want to get rid of my 914 but I REALLY want one. I could, however, wait till we've moved into a larger house/garage and get both, or just trade it over straight now. If I trade it then it would be no cash out, and once we move into a larger place I could start Lambo hunting for the Urraco or Jarama or Jalpa. If I do buy it, then I'd have to find somewhere to park the damn thing to keep them both. I've been unsuccessful at finding a buyer for a 914, even though they have appreciated in value... so the chance to trade straight over seems rare. Opinions? Ideas? topcabron Report post Posted November 17, 2010 go for the trade. Are 914 really appreciating? If you cant sell it, and you want to sell it, and you can trade for a more desirable car, I don't see the hang up.

The 914 is neat, but from what I have seen, you are an enthusiast and enjoy USING your toys more than showing them! Go for the drivers car thats going to give you the most thrill every time you get behind the wheel!

LPDADDY Report post Posted November 17, 2010 What kind of 914? a 4 or a 6 ? If it is a 6, don't do the trade.
Kerplop Report post Posted November 17, 2010 What kind of 914? a 4 or a 6 ? If it is a 6, don't do the trade. It is an early year 1970 1.7. It is the original engine (rebuilt of course), original interior, original paint, original wheels. The car has remained pretty much untouched aside from bilstein suspension and a 911 brake cyl upgrade and SS heater boxes. I still have the original fuel system. I even have the original foot rest in the interior as well. It is quite difficult to find such a car anymore, especially in the shape that it is in. In fact, I had not seen one this clean up close unrestored until I bought it. I've seen restored 914s that look new. But this is... original.. this is why it is hard for me to debate. IT EVEN has the original working stereo!

Kerplop Report post Posted November 17, 2010 Yeah don't get me wrong, it has dings and stuff and it's imperfections that you see up close, but with original paint and such, it's still a rarity at best. Thanks for the input guys. I'm gonna have to sleep on this.
LuisGT3 Report post Posted November 18, 2010 You need to post pics of this SC. If it's as clean as your 914, I say do it. If it's going to need some work, wait for the right car. SC's go anywhere from $7k for a beat one to $15k for a prestine car. 4 cyl 914's are anywhere from under $1k to maybe $8-9k for a perfect car. Tough choice, again, post up some pics of the SC and it will be easier for us to help.
DickSimmons Report post Posted November 18, 2010 Wouldn't trade. Didn't you put a ton of work (with your own hands) into the 914?
abolfaz Report post Posted November 18, 2010 That 914 is a gem, SC's are a dime a dozen.
Kerplop Report post Posted November 18, 2010 Wouldn't trade. Didn't you put a ton of work (with your own hands) into the 914? Yeah. It went through a harness fire and i rewired the entire car and pretty much went through it once I bought it. Aside from that it has been trouble free. That 914 is a gem, SC's are a dime a dozen. That's true... they pop up a lot. Everyone makes good points.

DickSimmons Report post Posted November 18, 2010 You'll also need a new hat if you go through with the trade. Not worth the effort.
Kerplop Report post Posted November 20, 2010 Lol... my wife logged on and saw this thread when i was off at work, loved the hat comment. We went and looked over the different cars one more time. I drove the 914 the other day when the weather was halfway decent and just can't see myself giving up that car. It's a completely different feeling than when I was in those 911s. I like them, and man they were a blast. But not the same. We'll keep the 914. Come next house, bigger garage and in time hopefully I can add a 911 and the oldschool Lambo I have been wanting. I need to stop being so impatient and just take my time. Thanks for the feedback guys. By the way, I bought some Zymöl for the 914 and did a full detail. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. That stuff woke the paint up a LOT. I am loving it.

Keep it nice, original, and out of the snow/salt, then add a 911 or even better, an early 911 Turbo, as nice as that and you'll have a great little collection!
