Help - Anniversary Brake Callipers

Hi,

Can anybody tell me which car the brake callipers on a 1989 Anniversary are off or where I can get some? I doubt Lamborghini had them specially made. I have just found out that 3 of mine are cracked and the price from Lamborghini is eyewatering!

Thanks in advance,

TSS

they are the same as mine 5000S, they should cost more or less 600 euro each at Lambo service: i can ask if there are some anywhere, but it's very difficult. I'm not sure they are Brembo, may be they are ATE.

Hi topcarbon,

I have thought about upgrading the brakes but I do want to try and keep the car standard. I need to investigate options on this a bit more. Does anybody know if anybody does an upgrade kit?

Hi Albert LP,

They are available from Lamborghini and you are right on the price. I just think circa 600 Euros is a lot for one brake calliper! And I need three of them.

Calipers are from a BMW, 5 , 6, and 7 series car from around 1976-1982 FRONT. Same for the brake pads, from the FRONT of those years, the fit front and rear.

I have a complet set of them from my 87 car, when I converted over to Wilwood parts.

i would not put any visible "strange" part on a Countach... Just OEM parts... if they are taken from a BMW like Chad says, take them but do not do any upgrade... take a Diablo, if you want an upgrade!

I think there is a parts cross-reference thread on lambo talk that says the same thing... 80's BMW parts.

But honestly, why bother, MoveIt makes a kit 10X's better and some have used Wilwood which has great products. I actually think Jay Leno went with Wilwood when he did his last. Good Luck

Picture shows what looks like two hook ups for the hose which is strange, parts pictures are not always super accurate as these are just reman ATE calipers.

Go back and look for a caliper for a 80 733 BMW front.

See the attached pic. Pic number 1 is of the front caliper for the Countach, pic number 2 is of the rear caliper for the Countach and pic number 3 shows bottom of caliper, showing flex hose mounting point. Note the spacer used in each caliper.

Yes Chad the 733 ones do show correct placement of bleeders and hose hook ups. Honestly the reman companies will throw just about anything similar in a box. I've gotten calipers for a POS before that had rased "COBRA" lettering on them. Same internals and hook ups, but just a few less cooling vents and some letting on the outside. One used on a Mustang Cobra, one on a ZL1 POS.

The spacers on the reman appear to match the rears, but I assume these are removable? Alberts picture of his front looks like the rear spacer in your picture. How much wider are the front rotors?

From what I remember, Lambo got their hands on BMW stamped calipers and ground the the letter B-M-W. There was a time Lambo owed money to supply and went out and bought from Bimmer.

Thanks for the replies everybody.

The originals on my Anniversary only have one feed to them, the fronts are different to the rears and they have spacers on them. The guy who looks after my car thinks they are off an E28 BMW M5, but can anybody confirm this?

Maybe Lambo bought direct from ATE when they could and then as Peter K suggests bought BMW when they needed to??

Initial investigations suggest that BMW might want the same price as Lamborghini for these parts. I would only buy originals not copied parts as I’ve had trouble with non-original copies of brake components on another vehicle.

Alberts pic is of a rear caliper. Yes the spacer is removable. You use the bolts from your caliper and use them on the new one.

I think I can get rebuilt calipers here for around $140.00 US each. If you want, just to make sure you have Countach calipers, I can rebuild mine and sell them to you, on an exchange basis.

Thank you for the info Chad, now if we only had interchange on all the rest of the parts. TSS said his are cracked, so I don't think you want them :) Core exchange is only $10 through the parts house though.

Hi Chad,

Mine are beyond re-use apparently due to the cracks. They are with a calliper rebuild specialist at the moment.

My Lambo specialist is talking to a classic BMW expert friend of his so is hopeful we may be able to source some over here.

If not I’ll be in touch.

Thanks

Agreed! That would be good info to have. At lest mine are in EXCELLENT shape!!! But it would sure be nice to have a cross reference for future use. I was talking to a friend at our weekly "cars and coffee" gathering who used to be the Lamborghini dealer back in the early-90's. We were talking about my Countach and how small the brakes were (and how far brake technology has come over the last 30 years). He mentioned that he "thought" he had heard back in the day that the Countach was actually using rotors & calipers from an Alfa or BMW.

Too bad none of us have access to a large parts warehouse. I would be nice to take our old rotors in and try to match them up. I seriously doubt that a company like Lamborghini, that was so hard up for money in the 80's, would be designing a brake rotor just for the Countach.

The brake parts on 25th were sourced from various different suppliers :-) BMW / AP for a good number. You can upgrade to MOVIT etc...but with a 15" wheel you are never going to get anything which performs like a modern car and it's not worth the money imo. Better pads will help with crappy oem fade issues....rally sourced carbon ceramics etc...

1) Movit are no help as they no longer supply the CT kit (I tried!).

2) Some Countach's us a smaller rear caliper, whereas others use the same size front & rear, I believe it was common that visitors to the factory would note the difference and specify the larger calipers.

3) I found a major improvement with EBC pads, so try them first.

4) Remember to change brake fluid regularly, it takes a lot of punishment if you enjoy driving!

5) I'm experimenting/playing with using 17" wheels to allow monster wilwood brakes, have a wheel manufacturer working on a 17" CT wheel so that its not too obvious......

let us know what you do, and how well it works!
