They built very few cars up until the mid 90s, hardly anyone knew about AMG when the Hammer came out, hence the rarity. The era of badass AMGs started with the SL55 in 2002 and continues to the present time imo. Also the 7.3 motor in a Mercedes sounds nowhere near as nice as in the Zonda (the ones in the Zonda are heavily modified and the sound is the byproduct of the titanium exhaust).
