I figure I can contribute a little what I know best

If you have any dental related questions....feel free to shoot them at me.......if there is any other dentists lurking, by all means, please chime in with your thoughts.

But as we all....do not take what I type here as your final advise or recommendation. Always visit your family or local dentist for an in-person exam and evaluation.

Dentistry is very subjective. If you see 10 dentists, you'll get 10 different professional opinions and treatment plans.

You're awesome!! Ok here's one question I have..its been going on for years..

http://www.lambopower.com/forum/index.php?...c=46711&hl=

I made that thread 3years ago..and I still have that dream almost once a month..its very annoying and it feels so real...each time I tell myself its a dream but i still fall for it thinking its real..

Its not really a tooth problem, but i was hoping you've heard of something like this happening to people before and know what causes it? (just trying my luck)

I have a wisdom tooth that's partially out. It's been like that for a few years. It doesn't hurt or bother me. Last time I was at the dentist (5-6 months ago) he said I should schedule a consultation with a surgeon to see if I need to get it removed (not sure if he was hinting in that I should get it removed or if he just wasn't sure himself). Anyways I haven't done anything with it since and it still doesn't bother me. Go pull it now or just wait and see if it starts bothering me at some point down the road? (I've not had any other wisdom teeth removed and this is the only one that's protruded at all).

That's some funny shit!

Actually, your nightmare actually sound A LOT like a lot of my actual patients! Patient with severe gum disease state (periodontitis), their teeth DO fell out! They wiggle, they become looser and then they fall out. All these patients end up with all their teeth pulled because they can't eat due to their teeth are always loose. They bite into something that they would be in extreme pain! End up with dentures!

I appreciate the offer... But I'm an antidentite.

You and 99.9% of my patients! I love my job because they all come in "Hating" me, but leave with a smile in their faces!

How much do dentists make in a year?

General Practice = $150K - $300K/annually is pretty standard (I hire new dental school grads with $135K base salary)

Oral Surgeon and Orthodontists (specialists) are at top of our food chain, $500K/year easily with 2-3 years out of residency.

Dentistry, is definitely a great medical profession as far as pay goes.

Also teeth whitening? Get it done professionally or just use white strips? How bad are white strips for your teeth?

The top of the line crest white strips do a better job and are less painful than zoom whitening at the dentist.

Great question!

I take out wisdom teeth all the time!

The reason your dentist recommended you to have your wisdom tooth that's sticking out of your gums (partially erupted) checked is because once the tooth is sticking out of your gums, then bacteria is able to get underneath the gums around that tooth, which can lead to gum (gingivitis) or tooth infection (cavity). Also, if that particular tooth is coming in at an angle, that can cause problems for the tooth that is in front of that tooth. Also wisdom teeth are harder to keep clean.

I always inform my patients that we like to take out wisdom teeth between the ages of 18-25 and if your wisdom teeth does not bother you after the age of 25, we leave them be.

I believe your dentist wanted an Oral Surgeon to check you out to see if above issues can be a problem for you. It's a preventive call.

There are three levels of whitening in effectiveness and cost

cheapest (least effective, takes the longest, and results don't last) = OTC whitening strips

next (more effective, takes a little while to see results, and results don't last) = dentist prescribed whitening tray with whitening cream for the tray

Best (ZOOM, takes two hours in the chair, whitest you can possibly be, results last) = in office procedure

DO NOT get your teeth whitened by any mall kiosks or beauty salons...those employee are not certified or oral health providers.

Whitening is not bad for your teeth or gums. It's the main incredient (hydrogen peroxide) penetration that causes the hypersensitivity. We now have ways to desensitize you prior to whitening to insure a comfort visit pre and post operatively.

Is TMJ something that comes and goes or once it starts is life long problem?

I started getting it and been really bad the last few years... I stopped chewing gum but my wife says I grind or chomp my teeth at night. What is my best course of action? Im 30 btw

I don't really get teeth sensitivity ever but I tried some whitening stuff from the dentist where I put little drops on each tooth of the mouth guard and wore it for a few hours and couldn't keep doing it because I would get intense, sharp pain from it that would last for a while even after I took out the mouth trays. Is the Zoom process going to result in the same thing?

TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) issues are more complexed.

But because of your age (you're young), your joint issues mainly stems from night grinding. When you grind your teeth at night, you over work your jaw muscles (massater muscles) and that can cause you headaches, neck aches, and joint discomforts. Again, if it gets worse, then you have to get a dentist to evaluate your situation. Conservative approach from most dentists would be a "night guard" splint so you stop grinding your teeth.

TMJ disorder is more prevalent in females in their 50s...

Your issues sound more like a teeth grinding issue with joint discomfort as a consequence.

Yes, that was the whitening tray method you've experienced. Again, for all my patient undergo ZOOM procedure, we apply a desensitizer medicine before their procedure and we use another treatment during procedure and have you use another agent for post Zooming to ensure your comfort. Not all dental office follows that manufacturer protocol, so becareful.

It is very common to have postoperative sensitivity with ZOOM, but majority of patient felt fine after 24-48 hours. Bright white instantly! We charge $299 for Zoom for the whole mouth. What's that saying? Oh yeah...."it's painful to look good!"

If you're interested in whitening? I highly recommend ZOOM. BTW, when you ZOOM in my office, I also give you a whitening tray to maintain your whiteness. Make sure you ask that with your dentist. Two services for the price of one.

Awesome. I will get the zoom done next time I'm in the US. Is there a point in doing it multiple times? If so at what interval? Or is it a one shot thing where you do it and that's as good as your teeth will get from that treatment?

Alright I'll give this a go...

I'm 22, have always brushed/flossed, the works. I went in for a cleaning last time and to my dismay found out I have "root resorption" or "tooth resorption." I believe it was tooth #14 that had low density in the last x-ray towards the center of the tooth. They took another x-ray and found the low density has grown in size and punctured a small hole in tooth wall between #14 and #13. The dentist told me that my body is basically attacking my tooth and absorbing it back into my body, and that normally this kind of thing doesn't happen to people my age - usually it's retirees (FML). He told me that I should immediately remove the tooth, a piece of my jaw bone, and all of the gum around the tooth (for f@*k's sake) to combat the resorption - or I can risk it and leave it as is until my root starts hurting (there are different rates of absorption so it may not happen for a long time - but the hole doesn't help). I decided that sawing my mouth to pieces was a bad idea at my age, so I decided to sit on it and wait. Its been almost a year since then, the tooth doesn't hurt, I've been paying special attention to it, even using a fluoride/mineral paste to try and build back some density (if that's possible). Needless to say I have another cleaning in 3 weeks and I'm scared shitless to hear whats going on with the tooth. Should I leave it for now? Or mutilate myself?

Thanks for doing this thread, hopefully it will benefit more than just us guys looking for sparkling whites. I drink a shit ton of coffee, smoke a cigar a week or once every two weeks, brush/floss/rinse all that. Tried over the counter stuff and it was a PITA and I didn't stick to it. My dentist offers the trays for a few hundred. Haven't heard of the ZOOM treatment. I'd like something that really lasts and I can touch-up later. I have some multi-coloration due to fill ins and I currently have a chipped front tooth that I need to take care of first, but really want to make this happen.

How is it that everyone on TV including shows with "average" people such as property virgins, international house buyers all have blinding white teeth?

My wife and I had the both has zoom done at our dentist office and while it was an improvement, it certainly wasn't TV white. or does everyone on TV have veneers?

No one can explain the etiology behind root resorption, external (bone into the tooth) or internal (from with the tooth), even the Endodontists have trouble treating the tooth.

At your age, keep that tooth as long as you can since it's not hurting you! As soon as that tooth hurts or you get an abscess, it's time to meet the tooth fairy!
