Not really. I think in some ways it's good to have to always be grounded on some level unless you have 3 months to live or something.

 

Have you ever flown internationally on business (let alone first)? That is the s***, esp. on Delta, Emirates. To "need" much more than that seems like you are no longer part of the civilian world.

 

Domestic you can only do it at that level on a few cross country flights. So I guess if you mostly flew 2-3 hour flights on baby planes you'd clamor for private, since it's really not all that special otherwise on commercial first class .

 

The takeaway I got from the article is that your level of "ballerness" is probably more attributed to your social circle than your actual wealth level. To be an insecure $400 millionaire is unfathomable for most of us, but it makes sense when you roll in that circle and feel this stupid need to keep up with other people in artwork or yachts or whatever. Make the person relatively anonymous and now they're far better off in that aspect. You have to be a billionaire essentially to be beyond Keeping up with the Joneses 100%.

 

Best to be in that 10-30MM range and not feel like Floyd Mayweather all the time.

I respectfully disagree. I think flying is the ONE area where more wealth would actually have a meaningful impact in my life. Emirates, Etihad, SA 1st are beyond compare, I'll give you that, but the one thing I think that's huge in private aviation is the convenience. At least in the US, if you are flying commercial, you still have to go through security, still could potentially get an enjoyable 'pat down' where they get a little too close to your genitals, you still will wait in line for security, still a line even for the top boarding group, you'll still sit in a lounge with other rich (but not wealthy) "commoners". A far cry from rolling up to your private jet, in your Bentley, walking straight on, no security, no lounge, no line, no pat-down, and taking off minutes later. Telling the pilot you want to change course mid-flight and head to your other island instead.

 

Personally i'm just jaded when it comes to flying, but that is truly the one big area I think having an extra $50MM would actually make a difference in my current life. The rest on that list I can likely do without.

In the Asian world, with the exception of the nouveau riche which seems to be the majority as of late; those who had the wealth for quite a while are extremely low key. As many had often heard, in Asia, it's the connections that matter, not how thick the wallet is. To be fair, when one has connections, it likely and naturally leads to wealth but wealth sometimes may not lead to being well connected. One will not necessarily have the opportunity to dine with high-ranking government officials or head of state simply because one is rich; but being well-connected will almost guarantee that. Crudely put, one needs not to and may not "buy" his/her way in. As to flights: of course, private jets exist. But you will be surprised on how some wealthy Asians (and I do mean wealthy) do not believe in flying private. Some Asian airports have its own access for private jets but a good number of them do not; one still needs to go through security, immigration, customs etc... with the crowd and then go a different route to board their own plane. In fact, off the record, call it jealously, call it resentment, those who travel on private jet get questioned and searched even more. The only incentive is, sometimes, they carry the procedures on board; but one still needs to wait for the officials to come to the plane and that could take a while. To some of these wealthy people, it's a commute so it's not worth the extra money. Not that they can't (they absolutely can), they just don't believe in it. Worthiness is a very abstract subject. It's not an uncommon sight in many parts of Asia to see a commercial jetliner pull up to the footbridge, a ground crew or two will walk in, identify and greet some VIP on board, take his carry-on luggage and escort him off the plane while everyone remains seated. The VIP will proceed down the metal staircase beside the footbridge, disappear into a car on the tarmac and then be driven away. Philanthropy is also a big thing for the wealthy especially when he wants to go back to his roots and donate to his hometown (e.g. a school, a hospital, a senior home care centre etc...) but those too are often done incognito. Maybe the building itself will be named after the donor but beyond that, there isn't too much fanfare. The majority of the truly wealthy people who had been wealthy for a long time enjoy "blending-in" rather than standing out among the ordinary folks. The more they can afford (and what can't they afford); the less they tend to spend in order to be prominent. From my personal observations, the one thing that they would splurge on is food and drinks. Money can certainly buy plenty of face-value happiness; absolutely no doubt about that. But perhaps to these old-school wealthy Asians, being accepted in a genuine way and being able to walk freely among the crowd is the ultimate state of content.

Well written article and mostly accurate but it only applies to the North American world at large. I don't know enough to comment on the European world but with true royalty and aristocrats, I'd imaged it's a bit different. In the Asian world, Oriental in particular, it would be quite different.

Applies in part to other nouveau riche regions too, especially Russia. European wealth is generally more low key but there are exceptions. True aristocracy/old money mostly keep to themselves and among themselves, no amount of money will get you accepted in their circles, you need a pedigree. I guess it's a cultural thing as well, some cultures have a very strange relationship with money, it's almost as if it is shameful, and it is unthinkable to flaunt or display it. Les francais par example....

 

Speaking of weird wealthy people, a friend of mine who works in the finance industry once met with a very wealthy aristocratic family living in Monaco, they explained to him how they were descended from Egyptian pharaohs and how their bloodline is bound to inherit the Earth at some point in the future... He's not even sure if it was them BS him for fun or they were that crazy.
