Thinking Of Moving To SoCal

Szabo, great move!

I'm a native Californian, did schooling on the East coast, then NorCal and now super happy to live back in SoCal. I grew up by the beach and now live a little inland. You can't go wrong anywhere in SoCal, but depends on what you're looking for - beach life, city life, good public school system, car culture ;)?

If no kids and city life, some live in downtown LA vs the Grove area vs Westwood, Hollywood etc. Traffic will Absolutely suck!!!!

If you want beach area, Newport Beach vs Laguna Beach vs Dana point. Atmosphere is a bit calmer. Lots of superficial people (think Real Houswives of OC) and cars. These areas are more expensive rent. Go a little inland into the OC for cheaper rent.

If you have kids, Pasadena or San Gabriel are nice areas with excellent school systems.

Oh yea, rent first until you find a location you know you want to settle down in.

Oh here's a suggestion, fly down for a weekend and come down to a Lambo meet - like Supercar Sunday or Lambo Newport Beach meet and meet a bunch of us and we can hash out where we want you to live ;)

Don't forget if you do Brazilian Cherry it colors with age, so consider natural light amount and furniture placement; that will affect the look down the road.

Ok, which forum was this post meant for? Can't tell if you are talking about flooring or porn set film and lighting technique.

Rent, try out different areas before committing. A persons wants and needs are always changing.

Maybe stay a few years in LA, then maybe a few years in Newport and maybe a few years in San Diego. The sweet spot always changes for each person at each particular time of their life. It is easier/cheaper to rent and has much less stress ( finding a house, escrow, maintenance, upgrades, etc)

More importantly ignore all the east coast comments, they have absolutely no idea how good it is here :icon_mrgreen:

Jan, the traffic is the main reason trying to stay around LA. Orange and that area would be great for house/cost value but I know the 405 all too well. You guys are awesome for all the advice, it looks like rent is the plan. Maybe I'll head down and book a realtor to help find a few spots. I love newport it just depends where I can eventually find work. Manhattan beach area seems decent too

When i was looking a long time ago, westsiderentals.com was a good place to look. I don't know if it still holds true.

I'd recommend anywhere from Manhattan Beach to Pacific Palisades if you want to stay on the Westside/Southbay...plus you are still close to LAX for travel. Good luck!

Newport, Manhattan (I have lived in both), Hermosa Beach and MDR, while very nice areas are SO crowded. No privacy, everybody is on top of each other. Pacific Palisades is not quite as bad just 2x the price. Personally I place a premium on space and privacy.

Malibu and Topanga are still pretty close and there you can get a large lot with a view and privacy. Also makes getting to the valley a whole lot easier if that is a consideration. Brentwood and Bel Air north of Sunset Blvd are nice too.

On rentals...our last home sold so quickly, our escrows were not going to overlap and we needed a place to park for six weeks. These guys offer leases from 2 months and up. Not the cheapest option as they charge a premium the shorter the term, but they have lots of locations and can provide furniture as well if needed. For us it was the perfect stop gap for a short term rental.

kinnsella, that avalon properties is awesome, prices are actually not bad for short leases

Another thing you can do is beach rentals. They're usually furnished and can be month to month. In the off season they're quite cheap too. If you don't have too many possessions then moving can be easy till you find a place to settle. In your shoes I'd for sure get a place temporarily where you can hear the waves from your window.

Assman you read my mind.... Thats the plan. Travel light, live simply and listen to the waves crashing on the beach. I have to get my head around dropping from a 1%er income to being a schmo... my money in NY and SoCal are pauper range haha

meh, there is a certain amusement to standing in line at the sandwich shop and overhearing the two guys in front of you discussing private jet purchases. :lol2:

It keeps you humble. :icon_mrgreen:

Try renting first. I'm an LA native and live in Playa Vista now, but am from Sherman Oaks. Both areas are great and have their advantages. Feel free to shoot me a pm and we can chat over the phone :icon_thumleft:

I lived in Sherman Oaks and right by playa vista, I hated both areas. I am right on Sunset plaza drive right now, and has been my favorite spot to live

Being here in Beverly Hills daily the only input I can offer is search for what makes the most sense in terms of time. Since our time is our biggest asset, don't stretch out your days driving in from the furthest places around to save a few pennies. The time spent on the road could be time used to make more business happen or whatever your purpose for being here is. I get clients into homes and apartments that make the most sense in terms of time. You'll appreciate more of it when it's not spend commuting. L.A. traffic is such a moving target at any given time of day. Rubbernecking seems to be a sport here. Good luck and let us know if you need any more advice!

Addict, that is a huge one. My buddy works at Cedars Sinai and he moved from Beverly Hills to Orange and hates his life, loses 4 hours a day from his family. As you said, time is our biggest asset

La is great but I'm so board here I can't stand it. Been here too long. However it's a great place to live if you have $. Car culture is cool, traffic ain't no joke anymore wow that's brutal.

I agree that the traffic there has gotten really bad. Last fall I was out and drove from LAX to a meeting in Palm Springs. That was easily one of the top 5 worst drives ever. The next day I followed it up with one the of best ever. All back roads through the Mojave from Palm Springs to Vegas.
