A Real tragedy

The question is what caused a carotid artery blockage in a 34 year old? RIP.

According to media sources, Katie fell last week during a photoshoot and hurt her neck causing a tear in her carotid artery (carotid artery dissection). She actually went to the ER immediately after the incident but it was misdiagnosed as a "pinched nerve" by the ER physician. Days later after the accident, pain persisted so she went to a Chiropractor this week still thinking it was a neck neuro-muscular issue. Most likely the forceful chiropractor neck adjustments broke/dislodged the blood clot along the tear of the arterial walls during the unnecessary adjustments. The blood clot only flow one way, towards the brain causing the stroke.

Two take home messages from this tragic case:

1) any traumatic incident, do not take the symptoms lightly! Next time your neck hurts after a fall, think possible blood vessel damage

2) do not go to chiropractors (I never believed in their voodoo "manipulations")

I did see a chiropractor fairly regularly for a period of 6 months (about 3-4 times a month). Although I felt immediate relief from the snapping/cracking, in the long run, my body feels worse and I find my back/neck cracking a lot more than it every did before.

RIP

I have been to a chiropractor for certain issues and for t spine and l spine issues I had better results than with allopathic medicine. I believe high speed cervical manipulation is scary though.

Firstly RIP to the young lady. What a stunner and a tragic situation.

Secondly regarding Chiro.

I picked up some injuries last year which were severe enough to require long term work with a chiro. There are people on here that I am sure that can chime in with much greater info but the clicking manipulation never featured early on into my treatment. It started off with accupuncture style needles at first to target the deeper tissues in my spine. That worked a treat and the contrast between scuffling my way in to the building to actually being able to walk nearly normally after such a short session.

I am lucky with the centre I have near me (I have certainly seen some unscrupulous physios that charge a lot more with less service) but the chiro has been effective for me though expensive over the course of the treatment.

You may want to add a couple more things, especially since they are more relevant:

3) Dont go to the dentist! There is a higher probability (true) that she was recently at the dentist, which caused some heart valve issues, which caused a stroke

4) When you have pain, dont go to a doctor of medicine! She probably took some NSAIDs, which recently have been discouraged under any reason, other than necessity, because they cause heart attack and stroke.

Im sure your probably pissed by this point. You are letting your emotions get in the way of your logic. Are there bad chiropractors? Sure! Chiropractors are not all quacks. Assuming this is no different than labeling a dentist a quack because he is 1) Not a "real" doctor, but a specialist, 2) Has caused deaths, 3) and 9/10 dentists have different opinions on if a cavity exists. There are "bad" MDs too. The one she saw in the emergency room will probably have to settle a suit for partial negligence.

We are all just specialists trying to play our role in maintaining health. There will always be these rare situations. Thats why we are talking about it. Im not against ANY profession, as we all play a role in getting through life. I have great friends that are dentists, my sister is a Medical Doctor, and my mom is a Nurse.

You are completely wrong when it comes to point #3 , since when does a dentist cause heart valve issues. If one has heart valve issues, they are born with them usually and have to take an antibiotic before they go to the dentist to prevent a heart infection

And point #4, while there is some truth to the negative effect of NSAID's , it is nowhere close to what is being propagated in the media. The whole world takes NSAID's but they are not the sole contributor to heart attacks and stroke, there are usually predisposing conditions.

The poor girl was 34 years old, just bad luck.

And getting to chiropractors, yes there are good ones and bad ones, just like any health profession but in my entire career as a health care professional, and that is over 34years now, i have yet to see one get cured by one , they keep going back and back for constant treatment . I would never go to one but again, that is not to say they are all quacks, they have their role in the health field and it is a very limited one in my opinion.

I'm not pissed at all. There are bad somebody in all trades and professions. Bad Dentistry have caused unfortunate deaths as well.

I just know how some one can become a chiropractor. As long as you have money to pay the tuition at a chiropractor school, then you can get into one. You and I both know getting into one is not competitive at all. Most applicants that couldn't successfully get into a dental, medical, or optometry schools, they end up either picking podiatry or chiropractic schools. For that reason, I am not a supporter in either of those professions.

Just a personal preferences that's all.

I agree, but dental work is still a risk for this preexisting condition, which many people dont know they have. With the model who died, her DC didnt just miss her condition, but her MD did too. She was the 1 in 100,000,000 who died after the manipulation because of it. Many of us would know of this risk today if she wasnt famous.

The number is about 20,000 deaths per year. This may or may not be many when you see how many people use them. But, neither is the risk of VAD from manipulation. Its very rare, and a quick glance at malpractice rates can prove this.

Unfortunately, this is a HUGE misconception. I would never claim to "cure" anyone. This would be like a dentist claiming they "cured someone of cavities" for life. If someone asked when I would quit going to the dentist or eye doctor, I would simply say never. Many conditions I treat are permanent conditions (arthritis, annular fiber tears) and its really just about keeping someone moving as good as they can. I may not have cured people, but I have kept many, many people symptom free and away from drugs and surgery (which arent always bad).

I agree with you. The main issue is that all chiropractic schools are private and not state funded. So, they are more likely to take in people they shouldnt. That sucks. This was not my problem. It is simply what I wanted to do. If you do go to chiropractic school, you can become a radiologist with a 3 year residency. But, this doesnt increase your pay any, as I can already read xray, MRI, and CT in my state.

My family has 400 years of combined experience in chiropractic. I feel that we have helped many people with many problems, and I am the first to call out a quack because I have invested in and want to protect my profession ;-) I pissed off a lot of chiropractors when I had a diablo with the plate "QUACK"

I like toofdoc's stance that because his higher "paid for" education trumps boner's so common "chiro" practice :)

Power to you both.

Rest assure that when I need a dentist I will not mistake one for a chiropractor. And vice versa. Both are held in my highest respect.

Buttt... Gentlemen,

can we stop bickering and concentrate on a lovely piece of ass which just perished?

What an appalling choice of words given the circumstance.

:iamwithstupid:

some people can be so cruel!

She was a mother and left behind a 7 year old. That is the truly sad part to this story.

...the hypocrisy is rampant lately.

It is called human decency, respect which doesn't seem to exist in your vocabulary .How would you feel if your mother or sister if you had one passed away, and the only thing anyone had to say about her is that she was a great piece of ass.
