gmendoza Report post Posted July 16, 2016 A few months ago, my stock clutch decided to start slipping. So out came the motor. While the motor was out, I figured it was a perfect time for a major service. Here are some crappy pics I took along the way: Starting to disassemble: more progress more progress almost ready to pull Its out!!!! Then I pulled the valve covers off to check the valves and checked the cam timing too. The notches on the cam should be aligned with the bearing cap. The best one; perfect: The worst one: So to adjust the valves: To adjust the cams: All buttoned up, ready to be installed: Engine in, almost done: Done!! In the end, the major consisted of: Corrected 6 valves that were slightly out of spec adjusted the cams Kevlar Clutch flywheel bolts flywheel bolt retainers NGK DCPR9EIX plugs valve cover gaskets cam variator cover gaskets plenum o-rings accessory belt coolant hose near exhaust manifold service air filters oil filter Redline oil, trans and diff fluids brake fluid flush power steering fluid change VAG coolant rerouted pinched PCV and coolant breather pipes repaired a broken weld in rear removable crossmember ceramic painted the exhaust I decided to keep the Platinum/Early LOC exhaust because eventhough it's not the prettiest, I like the way it sounds and fits perfect since it was built for this car. So far, I have 80 miles on the car. The powerband is less peaky now, there's more low end torque and the engine seems much smoother. The Kevlar clutch has very smooth engagement although still breaking it in. This project turned into something much bigger than I was expecting, tested the physical limits of my garage, had some good friends lend a hand, and it was fun times. FYI, Pancho's Speed Shop is what I jokingly call my garage.

jefflambo Report post Posted July 18, 2016 Just a little info. The notches on the cams and cam towers are assembly marks. Cam should be degreed. They don't always line up with assembly marks. Cam timing was most likely correct where they where at before you changed them. It dose not make a big difference but I would recommend to degree cams next time. gmendoza Report post Posted July 18, 2016 Thanks guys. Just a little info. The notches on the cams and cam towers are assembly marks. Cam should be degreed. It dose not make a big difference but I would recommend to degree cams next time. I did degree the cams also to verify the marks. The cam timing vid at the end shows measuring lift at the overlap stage. According to the manual, at the overlap stage, intake should be open 1mm and exhaust should be open 0.35mm right? Kevin M. Report post Posted July 19, 2016 Wow impressive job! How many hours would you say for the engine drop and clutch change?
gmendoza Report post Posted July 19, 2016 Wow impressive job! How many hours would you say for the engine drop and clutch change? Thanks. For clutch only, I spent about 16hrs. Total I spent nearly double because of all the other work I did.
Plastique999 Report post Posted July 22, 2016 How much was the bill? I have a friend who may utilize Pancho's services.
gmendoza Report post Posted July 26, 2016 How much was the bill? I have a friend who may utilize Pancho's services. Not gonna lie, bill was pretty high. Pancho only accepts payment in form of cases of high-end frozen burritos & chimichangas. I'm sure you can work something out. MrDangerUS Report post Posted July 28, 2016 Fantastic write up and exciting car-porn! I buy my cars to tinker/work on them. My latest was Lotus Esprit Turbo X180, http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f164/x180-...vements-246153/ but I'm getting anxious to get a new project. Decided to buy Murci Coupe LP640 and "play". . Luxeous Report post Posted July 29, 2016 Dude this is super impressive, hats off to you for doing all of that. The Murci is way too intimidating for me to tinker with it. I also had a good laugh at the 47 to go bit. That had to take forever!
