"We love our Mexican friends. But our national interests come first and the friendship comes second," a source said on the sidelines of a cabinet retreat in Calgary, Alberta.

"The two are not mutually exclusive," the source added.

And thoughts on this?

"The EPA, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation and the National Park Service – all of which contain thousands upon thousands of taxpayer-funded scientists – were told a few days ago to cease and desist any form of communication with the public and the media when it came to their research."

I'm very curious as to the motive behind this one

Thoughts on Trump keeping his personal phone after the whole Hillary email criticism?

It's been upgraded. He doesn't use email.

After watching POTUS 1st interview.....

Questions I would have asked:

What is your vision of where and how America needs to refocus itself?

Do you feel there is a significant threat from domestic terror groups and individual domestic "terrorists"?

How will you deal with them if you do?

In four ( 8??) years when you are ready to leave the WH and the presidency where do you envision your country

in terms of economics, race relations, national security etc?

Of all the many political fights you will expect to encounter which do you anticipate will be the toughest?

Just curious on your stance on Mexico. If Trump renegotiates NAFTA, and this ends up hurting the Mexican economy won't it cause even more illegal immigration to the US? Wall and all, they might find a different route if they're desperate enough.

Making the market great again! :eusa_dance:

The market is only indicative of investors outlook, not true economic health. For comparisons sake, the market boomed from 8,000 to 19,000 (roughly) under BHO, and we don't consider him to have made the economy flourish. Also, prior to the crash in '29 the market was riding high. So always make sure to take it with a large grain of salt.

To add to this, The market rally from 6000 to 19000 was almost entirely do to "quantitative easing", which the fed ran three different times during the last 8 years. Which has the net effect of reducing the value of the dollar in comparison to other assets (A stock which costs $1 to buy in '09 costs $2 to buy in '16, because the dollar is worth that much less... not because he stock is better- all other things being equal.)

They are branches of the executive department of government. They work for HIM. He is their boss, and gets to determine who they speak with with regards to their jobs, and how. He and the cabinet/department level heads he picks to lead them is the official voice of ALL OF THEM, and gets to determine their duties and messaging. Thats how these things work.

PERSONALLY, I think he should be able to fire every one of them and rehire people who actually AGREE with him... But he's not, so he inherits a monolithic bureaucracy thats almost entirely hostile to him and the values that elected him... So gagging them is the next best option.

And the continued reduction and almost non-existent interest rate. To be honest, I would speculate the previous administration knew you can't run near zero forever and wanted to "kick the can" to the next administration with the inevitable increasing rates and resulting economic challenges that arise from it.

I have not. Sadly I don't check that section much; I probably should.

That was always my feeling as well, when people said the Obama administration single handedly saved us from the worst recession. It wasn't that we were saved, it was just that they punted the ball down field and left it for someone in the future to deal with.

POTUS is taking alot of criticism for advocating for a wall along the Mexican border, but if done right could turn out to be a feather in the cap for Both Mexico and the US.

How to build the "wall" and have a win-win:

Build wall wide enough on both sides that commercial space could be created.

Official agencies and bureaus for both countries could have offices there- would allow onsite processing of passport issues.

Immigration courts could be located there.

Mixed commercial usage would be available.

Border Patrol and/ or military units could be permanently located there.

Create job training programs in Both countries around wall construction.

Coordinate business, labor and govt interests toward creating infrastructure, business and govt administration.

Get design input from architectural and art communities of Both countries.

Use creative financing solutions to minimize cost.

If done right it could become the ninth wonder of the world!

(Think Great Wall of China with business, govt and military facilities)

They're going to fcuk themselves on NAFTA. Now that Canada says they have to do what's best for Canada, Mexico is going to have no seat at the negotiating table

Nope.

Mexico is having enough of their own self-inflicted economic problems to deal with at the moment. They have their own border protests going on due to the removal of gas subsidies (Tijuana gas is more expensive than San Diego gas currently), water, and other commodity deregulation causes prices to spike.

It's been a pretty rough 6 months down there despite a serious boom in business and development. The last thing they need is the US to threaten what amounts to $1B/day in goods crossing the border.

IMO, this is all a political ego and pride play by Nieto, he looks weak and pathetic which is very bad in their culture. If he at least gives an appearance of standing his ground it will help him (at least in the very short term).

I do A LOT of business with companies in Mexico and while they love the peso at 22 not a single one of them wants Nieto to call Trump's bluff, because the smart people realize he has no choice but to follow through. It would unravel his position of strength when the negotiations with China start and that is a whale by comparison.

IMO Mexico (and Nieto) wouldn't survive this, it would set their economy back 50 years, the depression and poverty would literally start a border crossing war that would have our military guarding our southern borders.

Give it a couple weeks and this will all be put to bed. Trump will get his change in the domestic source % requirements and probably a couple other small things, call it a win and we'll all move on.
