718 GT4 comes home

Sold the 981 GT4 to a friend.  The ordering process for the 718 started in Sept 2020.  Obviously nothing like DoctaM3’s THIRTY MONTHS!! But still a long nine months to wait for a car.  I was notified my paint-to-sample (PTS) request was approved in Oct, and was given a February ‘21 build slot.  I had to submit my specs immediately and it locked quickly, but I knew what I wanted.

This is my first PTS and it wasn’t really a tough choice.  There were some tempting colors, like Signal Yellow which is a mango color, or Maritime Blue which is a purple-bluish color, but I have always had a “thing” for battleship grey sports cars.  Grigio Telesto is one of my fave Lambo colors, and for the GT4 I chose Slate Gray.

I learned (once making my choice) that there are in fact THREE colors called Slate Grey.  One is metallic and reserved for 911.  The other two have the same name with different paint codes and hues.  I chose Slate Grey Y97 which is the lighter of the two.  The other is also non-metallic and more of a charcoal.

I have loved Slate Grey since seeing it on a 356 many years ago.  It does have some Porsche history, and it checks the boxes for me.  I think it’ll “wear well”, and I won’t tire of it assuming it stays in the garage for what I hope is a long time.

I chose PDK instead of manual.  That was a BIG decision and so far (in my first 500 miles) I am very pleased with the choice.  It’s my first PDK track car since 2012.  I enjoy manual and automatic, and this PDK is brilliant and very much like an extremely fast manual without losing power while shifting.  It’s lightning quick, very smooth and fun.  It will be a very different experience on track and on the street it’s very relaxing.  Yet it can still be engaging when I want to shift “manually”.

I head to Watkins Glen in two weeks so I”ve got some break-in miles to pile on, but it’ll be ready.  I have some after market seat inserts on order which I’ll post once received.  They are subtle but will make it unique.  And they offer a memory foam option which my husband will appreciate as it dramatically increases comfort, and ease of ingress/egress as it raises you every so slightly inside the bolsters.

I haven’t decided on whether to do a half cage.  I’m not doing nearly as much track as in past years, and I may use the Simpson hybrid device with my regular three point seat belts.  If I decide to do more than 3 events per season I may go for the cage.  I’ve got time to decide.

It’s wearing Michelin Sport Cup2 and I was very happy to see these on the car.  I was disappointed with the Dunlop SportMax that came on both our previous 981 GT4.  We burned through them quickly and replaced with Michelins.

My P1 Designs LWB seat inserts arrived today!  They have several nice fabric choices, but I wanted something truly factory, subtle and unique.  My Porsche dealer service manager suggested this fabric (called Porsche Script) which was available on 911 and 944 in the ‘80s.  He sourced it from Germany and shipped it to P1 Designs in TX.  They crafted it into the seat insert.  I also opted for a layer of memory foam which is reputed to increase comfort (this was mostly for hubby’s bad back).  They make the entire insert (core plus fabric cover) and provide nice storage bags for keeping the factory inserts in storage.  I’ll report back after I get some miles.

I’ll turn 1000 miles tomorrow and am heading to the Glen soon for THIS GT4’s inaugural track event.  Looking forward to experiencing more comfort on my 600+ mile journey in higher style.

Thanks D!  Just returned from 3 days at the Glen. It was soggy and foggy but we had a little dry track each day. I drove enough to realize this car is on another level from the last gen (which I dearly loved).

The PDK is brilliant and a game changer. And the PCCB are unbelievable. They remind me of the CCB we had on the LP 560!  I kept braking later and later going into the Bus Stop, and there was still more to give.  The shifts at 7800 RPM at WOT are lightning quick.

Learned it’s lower than the last one  But so far no scraping

2100 miles in the first 31 days. I’m enjoying it!!

Thanks D!  It was a FUN weekend!  I enjoyed the car and camaraderie with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Love the color choice cake.  Car looks stunning!

Thank you!  Here are a few shots from this past weekend at Pitt Race.  I didn’t drive as I was far too busy with administrative duties, but I enjoyed the commute each day.  I was arriving each morning at 0530, and typically departing between 7 & 8 pm.  Super-long days but we had a great event with exceptional weather and everyone had a great time.  Zero reportable events.  Only a few mechanical issues which were cleared very quickly from the track.
