So... Ebola...

There are people that are immune to HIV too, but unfortunately that's a blood type and is genetic. Only survival of the fittest would fix this.

Probably the same principal when a civilized person meets and uncontacted tribe and the "white devil" wipes them out.

Medicine isn't my thing but afaik vaccines are essentially dead bacteria that are intentionally introduced so that your antibodies learn how to fight them.

Link to Emory University Hospital that will be treating the patient:

http://news.emory.edu/stories/2014/07/euh_...ent/campus.html

"We have a highly specialized, isolated unit in the hospital that was set up in collaboration with the CDC to treat patients who are exposed to certain serious infectious diseases. This unit is physically separate from other patient areas and has unique equipment and infrastructure that provide an extraordinarily high level of clinical isolation. In fact, Emory University Hospital is one of just four facilities in the entire country with such a specialized unit."

Vaccines are weakened versions of the disease and can also be viruses. Viruses themselves are not necessarily living organisms. Some consider them to be very highly complex molecules. Although a reverse analogy, they are like a computer virus. A computer virus can be highly destructive, but by itself it is inert and just code. It has to get into a computer to execute it. Basically it's a set of instructions. Real viruses are similar. Essentially they're just sets of instructions that get executed when they enter cells, which then produce more of the virus.

Some diseases are caused by bacteria, and since bacteria are living organisms that can replicate themselves, bacteria themselves can actually get viruses, as viruses can infect anything made out of cells. So technically some diseases can get diseases :D

How can you be sure? It's not like Europeans had first contact with Africans in the 70s. This virus would have spread globally a long time ago through Europeans.

No... Again... We don't know where Ebola Zaire naturally comes from... We've never found the original source or host... But we know that it's in a pretty fcuking remote part of the world... So remote that you got too sick to travel very far.... You weren't getting on a plane to Paris after you got sick... The Europeans who acquired it weren't casual visitors to Africa. They were folks living in Africa, typically as ex-pats or foreign relief workers. French, Belgian, Swiss.

It's a fcuking weird bug... You have cases, like this doctor, who took every precaution and still got sick.... And yet the Ebola Zaire samples the CDC have came from a woman (a tribal nurse I think) who got it second generation, recognized what it was, and went to THE CITY while she was fully symptomatic... Got in and out of taxis... In and out of hospital waiting rooms... In closes contact with other people while she's got blood pouring out of her.... And when they realized that they prepared for a full blown outbreak in e city... Shut down airports... Call out the army... Quarantine... Etc... It never came...

Weird bug.

Are you guys just bored and have nothing else to do but speculate on worst case scenarios or have you really had to rely on your emergency supplies at some point? I'm genuinely curios, not taking a jab. :D I find it funny.

I give you exhibit A why I store water:

And I'm reading reports of mass panic and here's a picture uploaded of the selves of a supermarket there

And Toledo Ohio has been declared a state of emergency and the national guard has been called in

The problem I have with a lot of "experts" with PhD and MD (as someone who deals with them doing scientific research) is that they have HUGE egos. They truly believe that they know a solution for everything and they can control everything. They get pleasure from challenging nature, but nature is just too powerful and unpredictable. In doing this, they tend to base their thoughts and solutions on ideal situations and assumptions which make a complex problem easier to understand. But reality is far from ideal, so they like to conform a problem to fit a solution they already know. They will place blame on everything else before admitting it is their own concepts that are flawed. Sadly, the number of times I have to inform these people that they are wrong about something doesn't seem to dissuade that attitude. I fear that those experts involved with the decision to bring known Ebola carriers to the US will learn in time that their ideas on the virus were wrong. I can only hope that it is my own fears that turn out to be wrong.

Apparently there's a water quality issue there.

EDIT: Missed Skokos's link, hence my statement of the obvious.

What kind of scientific research do you do?

My problem is, there are no "experts" on Ebola. There are of course people who have studied it (in level 4 containment labs wearing full spacesuits and piped air) for forty years... But outbreaks in the wild are too rare and isolated to have learned much of how the virus behaves in the wild... And the scientists who study it in the lab handle it every day... But vials of virus don't bleed... They don't sneeze... They don't cough... And yeah, sure, inside those containment labs they intentionally infect monkeys and Guinea pigs who do sneeze and cough and throw feces across the room for fun.... But they would NEVER take one of those animals OUTSIDE the lab once they've been put into it... They wouldn't put one in a space suit, and drive them in an ambulance and put them on a fcuking plane.... Because there is no way to control that and the consequences are too horrific if something goes wrong...

And they're all on TV saying "don't worry... It isn't mutating..." Which may be a truism.. But it's completely irrelevant. It's a level 4 pathogen... It doesn't need to mutate, it's already one of the worst things humans have ever discovered... And it won't mutate... Until it does...it's an RNA virus, which by definition mutate. The reason this one hasn't in the forty years we've been studying it, is because it's never had a wide enough, multi-generation outbreak before. Viruses mutate once they replicate themselves in close quarters after several generations... Give this fucker six months and ten thousand cases and it will probably mutate, the nature that mutation will take nobody knows...

wtf happened in Toledo?

"DO NOT DRINK THE WATER. Alternative water should be used for drinking, making infant formula, making ice, brushing teeth and preparing food. Pets should not drink the water.

DO NOT BOIL THE WATER. Boiling the water will not destroy the toxins – it will increase the concentration of the toxins.

Consuming water containing algal toxins may result in abnormal liver function, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, numbness or dizziness. Seek medical attention if you feel you have been exposed to algal toxins and are having adverse health effects. Skin contact with contaminated water can cause irritation or rashes. Contact a veterinarian immediately if pets or livestock show signs of illness.

What happened? What is being done?

Lake Erie, which is a source of drinking water for the Toledo water system may have been impacted by a harmful algal bloom (HAB). These organisms are capable of producing a number of toxins that may pose a risk to human and animal health. HABs occur when excess nitrogen and phosphorus are present in lakes and streams. Such nutrients can come from runoff of over-fertilized fields and lawns, from malfunctioning septic systems and from livestock pens.

Additional monitoring is being conducted and we will let you know when the situation has been resolved or if additional precautions should be taken. The water system is running additional tests to verify the severity of the microcystin levels in our water supply.

Sooo....the water just comes directly from the lake? They don't filter it or anything at a plant or something?

Also, very ironic, usually pollution is supposed to kill off life forms, not cause an explosion in the population of a life form that then pollutes the water.
