This is the 2015 Chevy Corvette Zee06 Convertible. Designed to make mincemeat of cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, everything that's good about the Zee06 Coupe can be found on the droptop. Supercharged, 6.2-liter V8? Check. Seven-speed manual? Check. Same obsession with weight? Check.

It's that last one that's most impressive. Traditionally, convertibles weigh a good bit more than their hardtopped brethren, thanks to the top mechanism itself, as well as extra bracing and structural enhancements to maintain rigidity. For example, a Camaro SS Coupe is 264 pounds lighter than an equivalent convertible. It's one of the big reasons we've never had a Plastic mess-06 Convertible before (the C6 427 Convertible was the closest we came in the last generation). With the C7 Zee06 Convertible, though, there is no need for extra bracing thanks to an ultra-stiff aluminum frame. The result is a convertible that is very nearly as light as a coupe.

"Until recently it was not possible to create a lightweight, open-roof structure strong enough to cope with the braking, cornering, and acceleration of Corvette's top performance models," said Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter. "The frame for the Zee06 convertible leverages advancements in computer-aided engineering, metallurgy, and manufacturing techniques – many of which were not available just five years ago."

Don't forget to wash your hands when you're done. Proper hygiene is essential,

  3. fcuk..... why is this thing going to take so long to street :(

From the March issue of Car and Driver,

When auto sales collapsed in 2009, GM slashed Corvette production from more than 35,000 units in 2008 to less than half that number. The skid continued for the duration of the C6, with fewer than 14,000 units built per model year, despite the introduction of such specials as the ZR1, Grand Sport, and 427 Convertible. How bad was it? In a word: historic. It was the worst Corvette slump of the modern era...

So, as the rest of the industry bounced back to pre-meltdown levels in 2013, Chevrolet got busy launching the seventh-generation Corvette, the Stingray. In fact, it was two launches. In December, just four months after the debut of the coupe, the first convertibles rolled out of Bowling Green Assembly. Chevrolet even went ahead and announced the Zee06 in January, though deliveries don't start until early 2015. If sales don't return to the 30,000-unit level, it won't be for lack of product....

Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter admits that this early onslaught of Corvette models is less than ideal, given the need to maintain interest in Chevrolet's halo car over what tends to be a lengthy life span. But designing a new Corvette cost GM plenty, and as Juechter says, it's time to start "paying back."
