  1. The terminology he used (or that the FBI used, or that the reporter writing the story used) was obviously "different". "fly sideways" "Caused the engine to climb" etc... But, would the pilots immediately notice an increase in an engine RPM for a few seconds? We've had commercial flight crews overshoot their airports by 100 miles because they were asleep at the wheel.

Definitely wouldn't notice a small increase in N1 on one of my engines (and for reference the KC-135 uses the F108/CFM-56 engine which is virtually the exact same engine as on a 737 or an A318-321 & A340). But we are one of the only jets out there without auto-throttles so I am generally continuously messing around with the throttles to attempt to stay on airspeed. I am not sure what auto-throttles would do with an external command for an increase in thrust...

    1. Assume its true. Someone can get into the flight controls from the back seats. AND they want to take the plane with nobody knowing. (And the "Nobody knowing" thing seems to be a key... Thats what makes this disaster different than others where planes crashed... No Distress call... No calls from passengers... No wreckage... The plane didnt come apart in mid air, which would explain two out of the three... It kept flying... FOR HOURS...) Assume you're the bad guy. What would you do first? Second? Third?

If I wanted to crash or commendeer an airplane remotely you can bet your ass I wouldn't be ON the damn thing when I did it. If there is a possibility of remotely hijacking the damn thing I'd do it from my living room. Not risk the thing crashing with my pink ass in one a passenger seat.

And while I guess, in theory, you can mess with anything that has a computer, I don't think it's possible to remotely turn off the ELT. There is a physical switch, yes, but I don't have any software based command to turn the ELT on from my FMS. I "assume" it's the same way on airliners.

But the first thing I hijacker would want to do is turn off the communications and associated transponders/ADS-B/SELCAL/etc. Next I'd probably want to slowly depressurize so everyone goes unconscious. Another unknown, because in my jet the pressurization is controlled mechanically (set by the pilots) with no computer input. No idea how it works on a modern airliner.

    2. Same thing, but this time youre the pilot and whatever you just said you would do, starts happening. How would you respond? Remember, a commercial airline doesnt have a "fun ring" and landing choices are limited for a plane that large out over the malaysian straights.

I guess the question comes down to can you hijack the autopilot only or can you actually eliminate any pilot commanded inputs during your hack. The first thing I am trained to do if the airplane does something uncommanded is to remove levels of automation. So if the plane turns left when I want it to go right I click off the autopilot. If I have an uncommanded rudder input I remove the powered rudder (Shell77 crash in Kyrgyzstan). But, I hand fly my airplane ALOT more than airline pilots do. Hell my first flight on this last deployment the autopilot didn't even work and I had to handfly the entire 9 hour sortie. That sucked balls. Do airline pilots do that? No idea. But I am sure they are capable of safely hand-flying the airplane to the nearest airport.

    3. Now... Put them both together and from the OUTSIDE looking in, how much does what happened, look like the above two scenarios?

    I'd venture to say it's never happened...yet.

  2. Does anyone remember the 2 passengers with the fake passports ? it was mentioned a couple of times, dismissed and we never heard about it again. Mossad agents tracking the cargo.

Additionally, 3 more CIA agents on board. The cargo was very sensitive US military equipment stolen during the withdrawal from Afghanistan and sold to China. PLane landed in Diego Carcia when the equipment and 5 agents were taken off the plane and was sent back out.

It has been crashed at one the deepest spots in the ocean, around the mariana trench. All this was done remotely by hacking into the plane's computers and taking over all the controls.

We will never see this plane again.

    Are you being serious?

If it was "really sensitive military equipment" then why wasn't it being moved on a military jet?

My god you really are biased in a certain way towards Airbus.

Not that I care, but it really seems to be a predominant theme in almost every other post of yours that has anything to do with aviation.

There´s no government agencies on this board(I hope, lol), no one is thinking about buying an Airbus, or rather a Beoing in here that you could persuade.

    :icon_mrgreen:

Oh I am definitely biased. I don't like any jet where the pilot isn't the absolute end all be all authority on what the airplane does and doesn't do.

Airbus believes the computers will keep the jet safe. Boeing believes the pilots will keep the jet safe. It's just a difference in design/programming philosophy.

  3. Pre 9/11.... Which is the event that changed everything... "Systems Integration" has been the buzzword in network design for twenty years now.... Every system talking to every other system, or at the very least, sharing a central backbone so that a maintenance tech can plug in his laptop to a central port, and DL all of the planes data and fault codes, check individual flight hours for each component and sub-component, and upload fixes/firmware, quickly and easily, and replace the various parts that are due for replacement. The guys designing the system aren't thinking that a bunch of (fairly sophisticated) fucksticks are sitting out there, getting their hands on all the open sourced materials they can find, for the sole purpose of finding and exploiting weaknesses. And will find that if they buy a ticket for seat XXX, wrap themselves in a big fcuking blanket so nobody can see what theyre doing, they can remove a small panel in the bulkhead, and plug into the whole enchilada.

Ever been on a long flight and instead of watching CNBC or Gigli on the IFE, you watched the little airplane icon float across a map of the U.S.? Its getting that telemetry data from SOMEPLACE... Where do you think its coming from? (Hint, its from the Plane's GPS, which is tied into the auto-pilot, which is tied into the engines and the flight controls.... Both of which are now connected to the cockpit by software. Software that tells the Ailerons "when the stick in the cockpit gets pulled in Y direction by X% you go in A direction B%." Get into that software and you can reprogram it so up is down, left is right, down is engines off, and right is vent cabin pressure.)

While seemingly possible...that doesn't necessarily mean it can happen.

But, Airbus would definitely seem to be more susceptible to this kind of issue though. Rumor is that the recent A400 crash is attributed to the computer shutting off fuel to all four engines. Boeing seems to program their airplanes so the pilot can override the computer, which isn't true in the Scarebus.

  4. Hate to break it to you Wheels but when Chewy gets old he is going to turn white haired.

    Spoiler alert:

Chewy dies before he gets "too old."

  5. Wow that throws the ideologia back to early 1900 aka eugenics. Imho, we are better than that, we are all worth the same and we can help most.

Imho there is not lesson to learn other than those safety protocols and safety measures are already too tight.

If there was 80's plane door on place instead they would have been able to kick it in and save everyone.

And if there was a 2015 plane door on 9/11/01 they wouldn't have been able to gain access. Double edge sword, and I think there is a less likely chance of a suicidal pilot than there is of a form of hijacking (I can only think of two suicidal pilot cases: this one and EgyptAir 990).

  6. I am not saying the guy didn't do it on purpose, I am only saying there is basically zero chance it was a computer glitch.

And if people are curious about security protocol for the cockpit crew on US Airlines:

When one pilot leaves to use the lav, there must be a flight attendant that comes into the cockpit. So there's always 2 people in there. And the pilot remaining must be on O2. But over seas it may not be the standard.

  7. Speculation I'm hearing is computer issues on the plane that the pilots could not override. This is apparently an issue with airbus that has happened before, why the first A320 crashed at the airshow, etc. The plane could have lost cabin pressure, done an auto descent right into the mountain.

Either way it's awful and I almost hope it was a freak accident and not a programming error.

Not going to happen. I am absolutely NOT an Airbus fan, but they have fixed their computer laws to prevent a repeat of the Paris Airshow Crash (and even then it only occurred during a configured low approach, not during cruise).

No commercial airliner (Boeing, Airbus or other) has an auto descent feature if there is a depressurization. Any such action would be human commanded or previously programmed into the FMS by one of the pilots (ie: VNAV enroute descent or a coupled approach).

If there was no foul play involved and there was a rapid D, smart money is that the co-pilot commanded a descent to get the aircraft's cabin altitude below 10K ft (standard operating procedure for virtually every airplane flying). But, he might not have known what the terrain was like under him and he figured was safe not knowing that his "above ground level" altitude was dangerously low (AGL vs MSL).

  8. Anybody here yet own an HK VP9? Seems cool but absurdly its offered in one caliber, and one size. Seems like a great gun, I wish they did a compact one in .45

I have been seriously eyeballing a VP9 for my next purchase. Can't find any ranges near me that have one I can test fire though...

  9. With a great start of cayman GTS and ZO6 and then ThethetheFerrari. Then they go and show all the three and what a let down last half of the show was. Didn't even care to watch...

Wasn't it a base C7 Corvette? I didn't think it was the Plastic mess-06...but hell I can't even tell the two apart visually.

  10. I liked the Ferrari Ferrari episode. But I can't say I am surprised that McLaren and Ferrari are butting heads on the race.

They are both being pretty chicken shit. Why McLaren doesn't want to race at the Top Gear track is beyond me considering that is their test track also. And Ferrari refusing to use anything except for a factory supplied car reeks of it being prepped and not stock.

  11. Thinking tactically, what are the odds they let them in so they could study their moves, training, tactics, etc? Knowing full well we had a few guys ready give them a crash course in the physics of a 300WM.

Or are we that fcuking stupid?

We know their tactics...find as many people as they can and then go boom as close to that group as they can.

Odds are, they got through the perimeter because the Iraqi military was in charge of security. The 300 Marines there aren't pulling patrols for base defense, they are advisers training the guys.

  12. I think the thing that bothers me so much about this, is the fact that we all knew something needed to be done. Then Jordan went in and reacted exactly how everyone felt was truly appropriate and Obama saw that people respected that. So he quickly changed his tune. It just seems too little too late (even though i feel it is what needs to be done). The question now, is will all of his loyal supporters turn on him for pushing us towards more war....or will they consider this fight "justified"?

We have been bombing the shit out of ISIS for probably over 6 months at this point. I am just not sure why they are keeping it on the D/L (it's not classified or anything, they just aren't doing any PR at all). Especially after the support for the Jordanian military you would think the politicians would be chomping at the bit to show how much we have been doing...

    I just don't understand politics I guess.

  13. Yes, I like the thumb power assisted retention systems like the one pictured in prior post (OTG) and by G Code (their SOC). As for the "attachment" I use only the RTI system. The RTI is by far the best available. To run with any belt order a duty mount kydex and RTI wheel.

See this link for an example by G Code: http://www.tacticalholsters.com/category/Accessories.html

Holster with and without light that I have and love: http://www.tacticalholsters.com/category/SOC.html

The other option if running light and red dot I would strongly recommend OTG. You can customize your order down to color. Here is a link:

    G Code SOC pictured...

    Awesome thanks for the info!

In the pic, where is that holster mounted? Looks way too low to be on the war belt...is that on his pants belt?

  14. When I get a chance will take some pics...here is a pic of some holsters for now I strongly recommend...

Do you prefer the thumb drive style of retention? And do these have some sort of MOLLE attachement?

I am in the market for a "tactical" style holster to go on my MOLLE war belt.

Oban is my go to...when I can find it for an acceptable price (the liquor stores around me want $100 which is price gouging when it's $70 at Costco).

I currently have a Macallan 12 thet I'm in the process of finishing off. Honestly, it's okay...I probably wont get another bottle of it.

But I did try a Macallan 30 on my way back from a deployment while in Germany. It...was...AMAZING.
