  1. Time for me to dig up a real beauty! Now, I've got to say, keep in mind the date that Anthony had this car.

Wow, I thought I'd never see a Gemballa Avalanche again. Built a few of those for guys in the early 90's. Kevin Mitchell and Benito Santiago both had em. Crazyyyy. Anthony you have almost had em all. Impressive.....Also, I do remember in the 90's, Ken Griffey Jr. used to always talk about your cars and want to do something wilder. Welcome to LP and hopefully you come around more often.

    Cheers!

  2. Emanon, you are 110% correct. And the testing certification lies with the wheel manufacturers to test (and pass) the wheels based on the PCD and application. The problem in SOCAL occurred a few years ago when the testing facility (GOAL Testing in El Monte) was sold and equipment moved out of the area. It was very easy to have wheels cut and then hand carried to the test facility to have checked in the past, but if you want them tested now, you have to send the wheels to Mid America and await the results (i.e. an inconvenience). Most forged wheel manufacturers do not have FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software available so they go with the, "yeah looks good to me" approach and deal with it when it becomes a problem. Since most people change wheels (or cars) every year or so, their usually is not a problem as the wheels manufacturers only offer the warranty to the original purchaser and for 1 year. If you take wheels wheels apart to paint or modify, then you void the warranty. In this case Im glad to hear that Frank is stepping up to take care of the member here and I'm sure he will make it right.

  3. Where the failure took place looks like it was wheel failure due to poor design. 99% of failure in this area is from the thickness of spoke/design not being sufficient enough to hold vehicle weight. If the wheel manufacturer tests their wheels, the cornering fatigue test would of alerted them of this problem. Usually it starts with a very small hairline crack in one spoke, then it gets bigger and bigger. Once the crack starts, then it puts more stress on the surrounding spokes until you have total failure. If the lug nuts were not tightened enough, the wheel would have wobbled and pulled off the hub, then broke the spokes. The hub area would have been mauled (chewed up looking)

In any case, count your blessings that you are still alive and well........ the car can be fixed.

I would start by asking the wheel company for its tests on that particular design. If tested, they should provide you with cornering fatigue and rotary fatigue tests that show 1 million revolutions at 110% of load factor. This test should also provide at what point the failure took place. if your wheels are that new, I doubt any testing took place whatsoever. This is just my 2cents from my 15 years in the wheel industry at the manufacturing/distribution level.

Best of luck....the car looks like it was gorgeous too.

  4. I stopped using them after they booked me a suite in Savannah (with a confirmation # and all). I showed up only to be told by the hotel that the hotel was sold out and had been for several weeks not to mention there wasn't a single room available for 40 miles. The amex centurion concierge was nice enough to get us a room at a truck stop about 60 miles south on I95! With that said though, Amex did arrange a suite for us for the balance of our trip at the same hotel free of charge. You should have seen the look on my wifes face when we pulled into the truck stop!

IMO, the centurion card isn't worth the additional cost over the platinum.

That's what I have heard also. My experience even with the Platinum is that they don;t do the things the claim. I have tried to book rooms, get reservations and get tickets to concerts that otherwise weren't available....with no luck. They stick you on hold and tell you that they are seeing what the can do, but...nothing. Recently, I was actually able to "charm" myself a reservation at a restaurant that AMEX Platinum told me "wasn't available". Glad to see my annual fee is going to some good use....

  5. I absolutely love the exterior color, but the interior is not my taste. A car with 12.5k miles with that ext/int color combo will likely go for 170-180k (because of the mileage) unless you find the right buyer for the car then you will get premium money.

Good luck with the sale though.

  6. Very true indeed ! In my opinion they are even lower than that right now.

I have seen some 02's with 175k asking price (retail). In fact there is at least one in the new Dupont this month. I'm told they are not even expecting to get that much for it.
