This a continuation of this thread. Started new one because this is a different topic and possibly others can add 2cents.

Andy C and CountachQV and anyone else, what is involve in making them pass?

Is it remove current system, bolt up cats and a muffler, tune carbs or computer? Purchase or borrow cats and muffler? 20 or 25 yrs old are exempt? I thinks it 25.

For those who may be able to help, these guys are getting their balls busted trying to pass emissions. Test is every 2 years.

I think you guys are missing the point. Find an address in another state to register the car in!! Now, I of course have never done this, but someone who looks a little bit like me has almost never had this type of car registered in the same state where it actually resided in for this exact reason. ;)

Either butcher the car and strangle it with cats, air pumps, and laborious and expensive resettings of cams, ignition, etc, or just set it up the way it should be and register the damn thing elsewhere. Not that this doesn't have some risks and pitfalls, but in my experience they were minor relative to the alternatives.

Back when it seemed I had no choice but comply, once every year the cams, ignition, and fuel delivery were set up for clean running (poor thing ran like crap of course). As soon as the test was passed, I limped it home and went to work getting her back to normal. This was on a carbed Lotus, but the principles are the same.

In Italy, until a few years ago, inspections were kind of a joke - the first inspection was after the car turned 10 years old - then every 4 - but no smog test, just lights, blinkers, running brake test, wipers, etc.

Now with the EEC things got stringent - smog machines linked directly to DMV by high speed modem - one would think no way around? Think again - the guy of the shop, instead of sticking the sensor in my exhaust pipe, just placed it in the corner of the garage - surprisingly enough it picked up very little Co2.

Regarding the Db levels, the microphone, during the test, was kept in his coat pocket - seemed like a very quiet Countach on the other side of the modem

I guess unless they also get web cams this can be a solution to keep my non cat downdraft tagged.

A nice high power ride is more than enough for this "special" treatment.

What exactly do they look for and test for? Different localities have different testing. Some must meet a visual and tail pipe test, in which the cats and air pump will need to be there, yet others only care what comes out the tail pipe. Do you know what specs they are looking for? Knowing how strick or easy going your locals are may help in the decision on how to get it passed or other alternitives such as Steve mentioned.

Mine was a Connecticut car for a part of its life.... Failed emissions 4 times (never passed) and then was sold to Florida (no emission tests). To bring it up to California Emissions cost $6K.

These are the three measured gases.

NOX, CO, Hydrocaorbons

What is it failing all three?

To lower hydrocarbons and CO and NOX.

Cats must be installed.

Air pump must be installed and functional.

Any decent welder can take to 60.00 dollar universal cats

and weld them into the tail pipes.

This is what should be done first.

This will greatly reduce NOX

Install two new Bosch 02 sensors. 100.00 a peace.

Frequency valves should be buzzing. (they look like little injectors located

on the sides of each CIS units).

If they are not. Possible causes. Bad wires to them ,Bad Frequency valves

or defective ECU. or the 3 mm inrichment screws are to far out.

For the lousy 270.00 each just get new freq valves.

They have the bosch numbers on them and any BMW/ Mercedes dealer

can get them. Along with the 02 sensors as well.

Make sure you have clean air filters.

Once the above steps have been completed

have someone who is willing to spend some time set them on a 5 gas

analizer. this is a CT, RI, Mass Inspection machine.

You need the long 3mm allan wrench and adjust the co.

If you are not able to get the co low enough.

Look into replacing the warmup regulaters.

The biggest problem is no one wants to take the time

to figure it out. But beleave me it is a very simple system.

Good luck

E-tests are a complete waste of time and money on these types of cars. They only made about 2 thousand of the cars total..and then factor in how many are still driving around in the US, and how often they are driven...The cars should be completly exempt from e-testing simply because they didn't build enough of them to even have the most minor impact on the eviroment!!

CountachQV's car is a downdraft........ even with cats and an air pump you got a lotta work to clean up that car.

Good Luck ....

In the state I live in now we have exempltions for low production volume and historic cars.

Some good info here. At this time I am leaning toward Go Mifune, that is go reg. elsewhere.

Explaining what I have gone thru over the past 6 months would take too long and my car being a downdraft WILL have to be butchered to pass (and may be burn in the process on my way home). by the way the state only recognized work done by their approved mechanics. No exotic shops in my area are signing up for being blessed by the state. So I am not letting Joe6 pack tuning my 6 carbs and advance..

I heard that the guy that used to head the Ct emission dept had his Ferrari damaged during a test. He tried to push a law exempting the rare and collectible cars. The problem is that the law makers are pricks. They dont want to give the impression they cater to the "rich" (like this is not a fact already!) and priviledged minority. They totally miss the point. Since most collectible cars are over 25 years there is not enough people able to rally to push these laws I guess.

My car has 4 more years to go and I wont butcher it for this crap. So for now I keep my old sticker to drive for a fe month since they kept my registration cash anyway (but told me I could not register before compling)

As far as I am concerned I met the requirement to go for the first test and the cost of doing anything is well above the $600 spending limit.

But I will have to find an "alternative" for a few years. If anyone has suggestions for help, please email me private.
