Jalpa Tranny Fluid Change Bolts ???

OK, it was supposed to be easy, but that's asking too much. Just felt like I'd do fluid changes...

There's 2 bolts, side-by-side, underneath tranny. I assumed only one is to drain the fluid, but its not moving... at all. I didn't want to pull on the other bolt since not sure what its for.

 

Bolt A is what I think should drain, but its rounded off - I used proper size '6' sided wrench (turning left) and no luck.

Will bolt B work ?

Not sure why they're both.

Bolt "A" is the normal drain and its common for them to round off because someone tightened it to tight last time. Its been a while since I've been into a Jalpa tranny, but I think you could use the other bolt. Unscrew it with caution making sure nothing else comes out with it, like a spring or a pin.

According to my jalper parts book, it shows nothing behind either bolt. It list the same part # for both bolts and should be magnetized, even though yours are different, maybe the threads are the same. Additionally the oil line going into the case next to bolt A has a inline filter behind it & nothing else.

That bolt is definitely to drain the trans fluid (was opened the other day at Wil DeGroots). We were looking for a sight glass to see see the level w/o any luck. Does anyone know the part # for the gaskest of that small metal plate in the bottem of the provided picture showing the two exposed nuts? I have a moderate leak from this gasket. Also, there is a part leaking just to the front of this picture (has a rubber/accrodian-like cover over it.........having trouble finding it in the parts book.

What does that small metal plate cover ?

I can't get that bolt out as I've already snapped my extension in half with the force I've pulled on it - am afraid I'll strip-out the threads...

 

If that metal cover comes off, I'll just remove it ! What's it covering ?

...and a part# for the gasket would then assit me too.

The plate has 5 bolts that I can see. The gasket # is 002407480. It looks like a access cover, there looks like 2 dowel pins that might be behind it, but they might be used to align the cover. On Jalpa.ch, Raymonds site, he has a copy of the parts book you can view over the internet. You have to email him to get the password, but after that you can use it. My parts book is the same, but I am happy to help anyone else!

I wonder if removing it, would cause the fluid to drain out OR worse, that pin to drop and not be able to put back in? Can't tell by the picture on his site. Thanks for the link, I did have the PW already...

 

Anybody removed this yet ? I'm not going to unless someone else has !

i am kind of late here, but when i first purchased my 85 Jalpa the bolts were very tight as well. i warmed the trans up and then took a can of air that you blow out computer cases with. if you are careful, it will blow out super cold air before the can freezes up. i had the case warm ( not hot) and cooled off the bolt head. it poped right out with a 1/2 drive wrench. i found new grade 8 magnet bolts from a local heavy truck service place and replaced the old ones. they were a standard metric size drain plug, if i recall.

Am using Lucas 80W/90. Synthetic's are better for gears, but non-syn is better for the shifting. I figure the tranny is pretty tight and the gearoil will work just fine (it has for 100 years so far).

Remove the plate - I had to take mine off yesterday. It holds a tension pin for the shift lever centering spring. Your picture of the drain bolt - don't remove the black bolt, that is a pivot for the 2 shift rods inside the transmission. Look at the parts manual for the car and you will see what I am talking about.

I removed about 3 liters worth by taking off the pump pipe between the differential and tranny (just inside the rear wheel). I couldn't get that bolt out...aargh !

 

Perhaps you're low on fluid, but that's the amount I got out/in.

 

After 3 liters, it started coming back out the overflow hole where I filled a little bit. I let it get to a fine drip and put the bolt back in.

The bolt on the side of the transaxle(going towards the front of the car),shown as #27 in the parts diagram, is the hole you use to see if the fluid level is correct, right?
