They are one of the glamour cars of the motoring world, and in Auckland today, three Lamborghinis were up for auction.

But would they sell during a recession, or would the auction turn out to be a 'silence of the Lamborghinis'?

They can cost more than half a million dollars new, but it seems the recession has let some of the air out of their tyres.

"The cars are a bit of a, sort of an idea of what's going on around the recession, because when the cars are on the block for sale there's a reason for it," says Chris Broadhurst, auctioneer. "It's not just the prestige cars you know - repossessed cars are up 31 percent to date, so it's showing, it is really showing."

Three Lamborghinis were up for auction in Auckland today, and the elegant autos drew a crowd - but not everyone was buying.

The most expensive of the Lamborghinis was expected to fetch up to $260,000, and the bidding was enthusiastic.

In the end, the top one sold for $216,000. The other two sold for $173,000 and $154,000. The auctioneers say despite the recession, the Lamborghini is still a glamour car.

Yeah that was in NZ dollars.

It was in all our national newspapers before and after the auction.

Our country is so small that these cars are a big deal becasue there are only a doz or so Murci's in the country.

Just over 200K for that car was bloody good buying compared to other cars on the market here.

That's what I was wondering about, such a small country and it has a functional dealership. I wonder how they keep it up and working.

Yeah gotta wonder how they keep the dealer going. They sell a hand full each year (most gallardos) maybe 6 or so.

They do have a lot of lower value cars like astons, BMW's and such.

I assume keeping them turning over keeps it alive.

Wow murci for NZ$260K and Gallardo for under NZ$200K. Thats cheap! Oz still $400K for Murci and $300K for gallardo auction or early model years.
