As mobile devices become more and more ubiquitous they will be more commonplace. I'm not sure what you mean by have a future in marketing though? They are simply a quick way to enter a URL, serial number or any other piece of text into a handheld device. Just like a barcode scanner, only able to carry more data then say 12 characters.
