lambornima Report post Posted October 22, 2010 Ive come to a cross roads. Advice from those with experience would be much appreciated My program right now will be leading my to a B.Comm and up until now I have been thinking of specializing in Finance. However the road of Accounting seems more straight forward and if I do take that road Id probably head for a CMA designation (and maybe other stuff later). I like my accounting courses (though I havent experienced much when it comes to the Finance courses). If my father's business is successful I will likely work with him after I graduate, otherwise Id like to head into the auto industry somehow (you know, since I kinda like cars ) Any thoughts? Im not just looking for answers, Im also looking to be able to ask myself the right questions. Thanks Nima

If he does own the business and you're plan is to take it over, then I would take Business as a major. You'll get an education that's condusive to running a business. Finance courses, accounting etc. I owned a construction company, I have a business degree. When I was at a meeting years ago with a city agency, one of the interviewers from the MTA asked me if I was a P.E., i told them no, I had a business degree but how many would you like me to hire? I signed contracts 2 days later.
Elec Report post Posted October 23, 2010 I did both Finance and Accounting for undergraduate. A lot of the courses overlapped so it wasn't too hard to do both. I am very happy with my decision. I feel that if you do just one and not the other, you do not get the full picture.

The thing is I think accounting opens more options if I DO NOT take over my fathers business. I certainly wouldnt open my own business until I get experience and resources under my belt. thanks for the advice though
