After 10 years of trying, bonhams has finally persuaded the owner of an ultra rare Lamborghini which has been languishing in a Spanish garage to consign it for sale.

The unique, front engined 400GT Monza has been something of an enigma to Lamborghini fans, many of whom thought it had disappeared for ever after its last known public sighting during the late-1960s.

The Monza was built in 1966 on a 400GT chassis and dressed with a voluptuous, hard-crafted body created by a tiny coachworks called Neri and Bonacini, best remembered for their bodies on Ferrari chassis.

Looking something like a Ferrari 250GTO (and indeed, using a GTO windscreen), the Monza has a 'basket handle' roof design and an almost horizontal fastback with Kamm tail treatment and 'blade' bumpers.

The Monza was exhibited at the 1966 Barcelona Motor Show, where it was snapped-up by a wealthy Spanish sportsman who was clearly able to get around General Franco's edict that everyone should drive utilitarian, home-grown vehicles. After being used mainly to transport its owner to race meetings in which he drove Porsche 906 and 908 competition cars, the unique Monza was laid up in 1970 with just over 7000km recorded on its odometer.

Retained by the owner's family after his death, it has been preserved exactly as last driven and will be offered in 'as found' condition by Bonhams, with a pre-sale estimate of £80,000 - £120,000 ($140,000 - $210,000)

Look out for an exclusive feature in the Monza in the next issue of Octane.
