Anyone had recent contact with him? Mecano i believe had some physical ailments if memory serves me correctly, but i'm not sure.

That is a very bleak approach to life. While i think there are going to be some earth shattering changes, i don't know if it'll get to that point in 4 years. Maybe. I can see the whole middle class in America disappear, it's dying off with the baby boomers. America used to be in a unimodal Bell Curve, but now we tend to fall into the bi-modal model. Time will tell.

Glad to hear that you don't take things too seriously, but there are points where it should be. Obviously this would be one of them. But to me it sounds like you should have a problem with the previous owner, and not the shop the previous owner took the car too. Especially if the previous owner requested the aforementioned "operation" to the vehicle, and then neglected to inform you of the procedure. Just food for thought.
