lowered Countach

I've seen at least 3 or 4 independent comparisms on forums comparing the measurements. It just kinda looks like it was smushed down a bit all the way around. The bottom also seems pushed up a bit and ride height let down, so when you drop a later car down to S1/S2 height you have clearance issues. Guess they decided not enough people could fit in them :)

What I belive, after looking at some cars, is that the roof is only lower in the front. On the early cars, you can see that it has a slight tapering towards the windshield from the point at the rear end of the door. On the black LP500S you see no taper, and after test-sitting both my LP400S3 and a LP400 the same day, I have to say that they felt EXACTLY the same to be inside, exept for the view to the front, where the S3 gave a bit better view because the glass reach higher. I do not think that the total hight of the body is different.

Allso, look at the bar that splits the side glass. On the early cars, it tapers down towards the front, and is paralell to the roof. On the black car, it is still paralell to the roof, but it is allso paralell to the ground. The lower glass does not have the same shape. Later car, higher front measure on the lower glass that early car.

Those that do not believe there is a difference have never had both side by side with a tape measure. Even the rear fenders are different. I have measured 4 cars...all now in CAD. 5000S DD, 5000S, LP400S S3 all the same, LP400S S2...much different.

I do belive in the difference, but I think the frame inside is quite like in measurements exept for the taper to the front window. If you put two LP500S from 1983 (or any two Countach's from the same year) side by side, and measure, you will find differences. Doors from any two cars from the same year is NOT interchangable, the hole to the naca duct on the side can be a bit of from side to side on the same car, and different height to the other car. If one take a measurement on the lower part of the rocker panel, and measure it to the top of the roof at the back of the cabin and front , I would be surpriced if there was much difference other than the front measurement. I will take measures of mine, and try to get to do the same on the LP400 early next week.

If any other too would go and take these masurements (top body to lovest on rocker) both red and green line, and what car it is taken on, it would be helpful. I will on a 1982 model LP400S3.

Tony Ierardi took the measurements and posted them in the countach thread on fChat. it was clearly different on the different models.

Well I hear all say so, and it is not that I don't belive them, but I want to know EXACT how much they differ if they do. If others can take these measurements, it will tell. I can do on a LP400 and a LP500S next week.

Here are the ones on mine: Front (green) 93 cm and rear (red) 93 cm. That is 36 2/3" both front and rear.

See on the photos exact where I put the bar over the roof, and what I considder the bottom of the rockers.

Tony did take measurements on fchat. The body does sit lower, look where the fenders sit in comparison to the tires. The body is shorter, the biggest difference was in the door panel height. Same windshield & glass, it's the changes below the glass. You really have to hand it to Lamborghini, most could not have pulled a change like this as smoothly, and gone on so long without much of any notice.

Total hight of my car to the bar that lies at the rear and is the highest point is 107 cm as it is supposed to be. ut my car has no exhaust, no fuel and no oil, so that might effect the hight when "wet".

107cm = 42,1"

Official LP400 height is 107 cm. Ground Clear 12,5 cm.

Official S3 and later is 107 cm. G C 12,5 cm.

Low S1 and S2 is 103,9cm. G C 11.0 cm. Seems to be only 1,5 cm lower spring-setting.

Groundclearence at the lowest point on my car is not easy to spot, but frame betwine the front suspension looks to be it.

107 cm - 103,9 cm - 1,5 cm = 1,6 cm!! That is less than 2/3" in height difference of the body itself.

I remeber: looks like they cutted 1" at the middle side of the car. S1 and S2 are thinner than S3 and laters car, they are really gorgeous. But ground clearance is poor and i did not feel comfortable in the S2 i sitted. And i'm only 6' 0".

But in a show they are the best Countach, as i do not like the narrow wheels LP400.

the actual bodies do look taller/thicker to me especially in front of the rear wheels... You can't beat the lowbody look

but i don't fit in them. I do however fit in my "TALL" car,

(Thanks Peter, i appreciate that.... Glad you rescued yours - you did well :)

  • 4 weeks later...
I am looking for some help. I have a 86 Countach QV DD in pearl white. It looks like the previous owner lowered the front to the same height as a Series 1 low body. I believe it is not OE parts, It looks like an aftermarket kit. the shocks are blown, and I need to replace the shocks, does anyone out there know if any one or any company made a kit to lower the front end? it is about 1inch to 1.5 inches lowered than stock. any information I would gladly appreciated. The springs and shocks have no markings.

Hi James,

We met at the Concorso in 2007, I owned your car before John. When I bought the car it already had adjustable coil overs in the rear so I bought a set of fronts from Chad to get that early low body look. I was not happy with the lack of travel and stiff ride. I have worked with Koni to make adjustable coil overs for the Countach. Fell free to call or email me.

Tony, the shocks you have are within 1/4 in of the factory parts, so travel will be for the most part the same as factory. That is unless you had me order a different shock for you. In that case it is not the shocks fault, as you may have ordered them that way.

Stiff ride, the shock has a control knob on it, you can set the ride super soft or super hard. You just need to adjust it.
