The other month I flew to Chicago and absentmindedly wore my laboratory shoes. Which is a problem for me because I work with radioactive substances, nitrates (which are used in lots of home-made bombs), and generally lots of nasty chemicals and inevitably trace amounts end up on my shoes. So the bomb-sniffer device had a conniption and I got to take a detour and explain why my shoes were covered in all sorts of odd substances.

Funny how a giant screwdriver can pass by, but 0.001 grams of sodium nitrate or cobalt oxide results in a lengthy interview.

I'd hope they would investigate anything that has traces of potential explosives...

The equipment probably has to be sensitive, in hopes of detecting a well-packaged bomb.

SECRET SERVICE

SO this was not the first time.... and not the last.

More than 90 security breaches at White House in 29 years: report

NYP

SECRET SERVICE checkpoints are more like revolving doors according to a shocking report that details more than 90 security breaches dating back to the Carter Administration.

According to an internal report of perimeter breaches, intruders have reached the president or another person under Secret Service protection eight times since 1980, including last month when a pair of gate-crashers penetrated a White House state dinner. Red-faced aides admitted last month that reality-show wannabes Michaele and Tareq Salahi got into a swank state dinner without tickets, and even saddled up to President Obama himself.

But a review of security lapses shows an alarming history of big-time blunders. According to the report and more recent Department of Homeland Security updates, which were obtained by The Washington Post, protectees faced security breakdowns at home and abroad. And, with the country’s first African American president facing what the Secret Service Agency calls a sustained period of elevated "international, domestic and individual" threats, concern is growing over White House safety. But the White House said officials are learning from their mistakes.

"This document reflects a proactive attempt to evaluate our security and obviously raises the awareness of uniformed division officers and agents about their jobs," spokesman Edwin Donovan told the newspaper. "We have to be concerned about the threats to our protectees at all times, whether at the White House or away from the White House." He said the report was being used to train agents and officers.

The 2003 report was commissioned after the Secret Service was humiliated by a presidential gate-crasher, Richard Weaver, who evaded inauguration security to shake George W. Bush’s hand. Weaver, a California minister, had previously infiltrated a 1991 prayer breakfast attended by then-President George H.W. Bush, and crashed then President Clinton’s 1997 inaugural luncheon. He was arrested in 2003 after trying to approach Bush again at a prayer breakfast in 2003.

i love how those military/security suvs look.

Interesting about the lapse of security, jay leno was talking about when obama came on his show, and he made it sound like they were very very thorough with their job.

Any idea why they didn't use the limo in oslo?

Due to changing weather condition in Norway at this time of the year, it was decided a while ago to use the Suburbans.

Only 5-6 days ago there were falling a lot snow, especially at the Oslo Gardermoen Airport. In the center of Oslo there

are currently no snow.

Does the Presidential limo not have AWD? I would think it would be made to handle basic snow conditions...?

I wish Chavez would try to pull some type of attack on the US. We would slap him up and take his oil to have 30 cent per gallon gas prices like they have in Venezuela.

* No is was decided to be the better solution. At times there are a LOT of snow in Oslo and the Beast does NOT handle well in snow

especially if you need to get away.

* The Norwegian Secret Service PST and the police took some advice and were using many 4x4 vehicles as well:

Mercedes ML and GL.

Volvo XC90 and XC60.

BMW X5.

Most Dangerous Places on Earth

Brazil

It IS for a reason that we rate Brazil as a quite dangerous place on our list. BRAZIL IS CURRENTLY RATED 3+.

Take a look at this:

POLICE IN BRAZIL KILLS 11,000 PEOPLE IN SIX YEARS.

In Rio de Janeiro is not only the drug gangs that have thousands of lives on their conscience. Indeed, police in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo killed 11,000 people during the past six years. In Rio de Janeiro, it corresponds to that the police shoots one man... every time they arrest 23.

And that is not the solution. It is shown in a report by human rights organization Human Rights Watch, which also addresses a sharp criticism against the police.

"To beat people suspected of criminal deeds of death without a trial is not the solution to violent crime," said Jose Miguel Vivanco, who is head of Human Rights Watch in North and South America, told Reuters. "Residents of Rio and Sao Paolo need more effective policing, not more violence from the police ', it sounds. The 122-page report from Human Rights Organization confirms in fact something that was already clear after a UN investigation last year.

This report concluded that the police were responsible for a 'substantial part' of a total of 48,000 murders in Brazil every year.

According to Reuters, police in Rio and Sao Paolo does not wish to comment on the new study. But the head of the security forces in the state of Rio has previously said that critics of the police must deal with the realities of police work in. "We must deal with something very few faces: firefight with drug dealers, equipped with heavy weapons from abroad ', he has previously told the AP.

This statement in connection with a wave of gang violence in Rio. Among other things, was a police helicopter shot down and three out of six policemen were killed - this was also just two kilometers from Maracana stadium where the Olympics kicks off in 2016.

National authorities in Brazil recognize however that there is a problem with the many people who die in police hands. Residents of Rio and Sao Paolo needs a more effective police, not more violence from the police.

The police are now trained to recognize human rights, and should be better able to assess the proper degree of force in connection with an arrest, said Figueiredo.

In 2007 alone the police killed 1,330 people in Rio de Janeiro.

I used to want to go to Brazil, like every other 20 something, until I found out about the dangers... now I want to go to Argentina where it is safer, and still have friends who keep saying they want to go to Brazil.. is it OK for a tourist, or would you not recommend it? especially if one wants to go party after 11?

You mean no the Beast does not have AWD, or just no in that it does, but the SUVs are a better choice b/c of snow handling?

Maybe they ought to build the President a special tracked limo :)

Berlusconi attack

With all the security breaches that we KNOW about recently, it really shows how security isn't as "great" as some people think.

You are right. I it IS a very very difficult job. All the time the protocol changes trying to avoid 100 different scenarios.

And this is not the first time for Berlusconi...

In 2004 he was hit in the head with photo equipment in Rome while he was out walking.

I will not consider it extremely dangerous to go to Brazil. Now that you are aware of the dangers you should be able to avoid them.

You just need to be a little "street wise" and in addition follow my travel advices posted earlier in this thread.

But there are more and more violence so best advice is to hook up with somebody who has been there before and take advice from him as well.

Party after 11 is not the problem, the important thing is where you party. Stay in the tourist areas and if something should happen... give them ALL your money, watch etc RIGHT AWAY!!!! These items can be replaced, not your life.

Argentina sounds very nice as well, tough choice.... :icon_thumleft:

That should be quite safe. During the big event there are A LOT of extra police.

Any particular reason for wanting to see Bruno ?

Are talking about Berlusconi?

He was walking in public, if someone wanted him dead they could have done it without a problem. Plus, he's a public figure, you can't hide him, he's a politician.
