Any new iMac owners?

Currently running a 2006 MacBook Pro that has served me quite well, but is an old dinosaur by today's standards. I've been waiting on either a new iMac or go the route of building a custom PC (which I know what I'm doing). My problem is I love OSX and HATE Windows.

I want to learn and get into graphic design for my business startup, in addition to some photo and video editing. Primarily I want a huge screen that has kick ass resolution. I also want to play flight sims like X-Plane and a few other graphic-intensive games. I've configured a 27" iMac, and with my student discount applied comes out to just under $2500 out the door.

*My primary concern with this new iMac is reliability. I have only had one issue with my Macbook Pro and that was a fan that was covered under Apple Care. I've read that the new iMac is put together in a way that makes repairs extremely labor intensive.*

I don't own one, but I don't think you can go wrong with the new iMac.

Personally I am waiting for the new Cinema Displays to come out and getting two of those. Then picking up a new MBP. I will probably wait for the next MBP to come out which I expect in the fall sometime...

I'm just dumbfounded I've gotten SEVEN years out of my old MacBook Pro. It's been everywhere. Lots of flights, dropped a few times, carried through school and across Europe. It's seen more porn than Sasha Grey and more virus-prone areas than a syringe at a truck stop.

Just curious, why not a Mac pro?

I have a couple of new 21" iMacs. So far they are running tip top.

The only apple product I've had that has given me any grief is my 27" i picked up a couple of years ago. Hard drive has failed twice. Was a pain in the ass to fix because I had to take it into the apple store (2 hours away) to get fixed...if it were a mac pro or any PC i would have had it fixed in about 10 minutes. It is for that reason only, that I am considering a mac pro next once I decide to upgrade again. Like you, I love mac OS and hate windows, but I miss upgrading stuff on my own if it becomes necessary.

I'd love to. But as Sprite pointed out they are a 'No Go' right now, with a new one "right around the corner." Professional/hardcore Mac users have been sidelined by the mobile crowd. The biggest downside is the cost - over a grand extra for the Mac Pro. $2500 for a college grad is a big purchase. $3500 and it starts getting out of hand. The biggest thing going for the Pro is the potential for upgrades in the future. We'll see. I'll probably buy the iMac and the Pro will come out a week later!

I would suck it up and go back to windows, because to pay the price for what you need, Apple is going to cost too much! Windows 8 isn't half bad...

I've had my iMac since 2007 and it's still running (and I update it every time a new OSX comes out) like a champ.

I haven't read about any issues with the new iMacs and I'm a part of a few Mac/Apple forums. I think they look AWESOME. If I was in the market for one I would get one for sure but I'm currently waiting for a retina iPad Mini and I'm mainly using my current iMac for internet browsing and music downloading so it's hard to justify a brand new one. Just get apple care.

As sprite mentions, you can make a PC and run OS X on it, you just have to work around the security check OS X has (it looks for a security chip found only on Apple motherboards). Technically, Macs are PCs now (since 2006). They have the same architecture, memory, buses, etc...as PCs. Some say Apple could probably really compete with Microsoft in the OS market if they'd sell an unlocked version of OS X that could run on non-Apple PCs.

Just love my little Air! Have owned it since December, knock wood, no issues yet. This is my first Mac computer and use it for work. I don't know half of the capabilities, but thank God for Google :)

Am giving serious thought to getting one of these beauties and getting rid of my almost 10 year old Dell.

I've heard some stuff about Hackintoshes, but I'm reluctant to go that route. I'm not sure the hardware performance gain would be worth the headache. I've already priced out a custom build, and it was about $1500 before a monitor- which depending on quality can cost nearly a grand or more. So it comes down (for me) of whether I can deal with Windows and have upgrade potential, or have the best OS but be stuck with the hardware for at least five years.

Ya. I would say I went through about half that in the same time. I did everything right and ran antivirus software and STILL had so many software issues and some hardware on my laptops that I finally said "fcuk it" and got the MacBook Pro. I need to remember what I first said when I realized how my problems went away with the Mac. Something along the lines of "I won't go back to windows unless you drag me kicking and screaming."

Just ordered a 27" iMac! Added the 1TB fusion drive and got the i5 3.2 with the 680 MX GPU. I'm looking at aftermarket RAM and a blu ray drive now.

The iMac is incredible. I own one and haven't had a single problem. Reliability should not be issue as Apple's Customer Service is second-to-none. THey've replaced my iPhone free of charge a couple of times due to minor issues!

I'm curious to see how the fusion drive does...give us an update when you get rolling. Congrats on the new comp!

The only reason I'd consider a mac pro, was simply for the upgradability. It is very expensive, no doubt, but I would imagine you get a pretty long life out of it.

The only reason why I miss a PC is simply for games...hoping the new steam boxes coming out near christmas will alleviate that problem for me!

Thanks - I'll post when I receive it in a few weeks. I initially switched to PC in the 90s as a kid because of gaming (we were a Mac family - long before the rage of Apple Stores and back when they used to cost quite a pretty penny). I started off with Duke Nukem 3D and ended my PC nightmare with Half-Life 2. I really used to enjoy the games like SWAT and a bunch of first person shooters. Consoles have stolen the show for the most part, but I'm hoping to find a few cool games to enjoy - even if it means installing Bootcamp and Windows JUST for games.

Good buy! Congrats on the purchase.

I just bought this computer myself. $940 shipped to CA. Not too bad. Will get a Apple cinema display to complement it if I can't find a good deal on a dell ultra sharp anytime soon
